laughing my head off here...
feel bad, but I am so showing this to my friends who are changing their pictures
honestly, I'm not dumb enough (and I doubt most of your friends are really dumb enough) to think they're actually helping against child abuse.

It's all about showing off your favorite cartoon characters and taking a trip down memory lane

I don't think it'll do fuck-all to prevent child abuse, but I changed my profile picture to Screwy Squirrel. Normally I blow off stupid Facebook "awareness campaigns", but c'mon. It's Screwy Squirrel!
Exactly!

Even if they didn't say "This is for kids somehow!!" I'd probably do it if everyone else did just because it's fun going down memory lane sometimes. reminds us that our lives weren't always shitholes :p

Mine has always been my own character, Leko (also seen in my Escapist avatar). But since that would be cheating and lazy, I changed it to Samurai Jack.

I used Naota Nandaba. I'm so proud of myself, I'm such a good person. And I can't believe it was me who ended child abuse.

A friend of mine had me change my display picture to a real-life depiction of Plank from Ed, Edd, and Eddy prior to the campaign. I've heard about it, but I have no idea how it works, or for that matter, if it does.

My friend sumed up my thoughts on this campaign in one status update:

"____: Just so everyone knows, changing your profile picture to a cartoon isn't going to do ANYTHING towards stopping child abuse. Everyone knows about child abuse already, this isn't going to "raise awareness". Unless you donate or actually DO something, you're not helping. There's charities out there, if you actually care. http://www.endabuse.org/ The only thing you're doing is letting your friends know you once enjoyed a show"

I'd just changed it to a picture of myself and my girlfriend the day before it started, and I find Facebook charity things ridiculous. I mean, this is better than all those "females-only (despite the fact that guys actually can get breast cancer too)" breast cancer awareness things. You actually tell people what the fuck your doing instead of keeping it all a secret and expecting it to raise awareness magically.

It's meaningless. It's raising awareness of nothing, particularly as a lot of people are doing it without posting the status update to go with it. If you don't know what it's about, it's just a lot of people doing something without context. Just like that "I like it (wherever they put their handbag when they get in)" - completely meaningless unless you know what it's about.

I just changed my profile picture to some slices of bacon. Probably a bit childish, but whatever.

I went through quite a few, trying to remember that cartoon I always loved but couldn't properly remember.
Then Rugrats came back to me..... Ah, the memories,
Holy. Crap. That's awesome!

I went in on the Pokemon December thing myself. I don't really remember what it's for, but whatever. It's not like I need an excuse to have not-me as my facebook pic. Charmander at the moment. Not sure what I would have up if I was doing the childhood shows one.

Edit: The Pokemon one looks to be just for the sake of it. Awesome.

I'd go with Fry Guy or Mario/Luigi from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. What? It sure as hell was my favourite tv show when I was a kid! I still watch "The Great BMX Race" once every now and then, as it is my favourite episode. xD

^ I honestly don't think your friend could have explained why people are doing it any better than that lol.
