While I hate censorship, this will give Anime a chance to stop using shady fan-service as a selling point.
And what of anima/manga with a well developped story, good and interesting character arcs, contains no shallow sexual fanservice but concerns a character who at some point had a very bad experience regarding sexuality, or someone coming to terms with his/her LGBT nature, or even consenting adults? Even if children aren't their intended demographic, they would be be affected.

Admittedly, I haven't yet read one concerning the latter example, but I have of the former.
And I can prove it.

And yes, this is important to his character development.

child safety... have you read 1984 or Fahrenheit 451? Because I see these books to be very similar to this horrible idea the government came up with...
actually Fahrenheit 451 was supposed to be about TV destroying interest in literature rather than censorship it just sort of came out that way... So I suppose the point still stands...<.<

WELL FUCK YOU CENSORSHIP LAWS!
ahem... parents should have to decide what is good or not for their children, not some politicians that probably never have felt love in the first place.

I'm actually not that worried.
Oh, I'm against the law, believe you me, but if there's one thing Japanese people are good at (besides drawing and weird porn) it's subverting bureaucracy (see pachinko gambling,) and if there's one thing the Japanese government is bad at, it's enforcing laws.
Having been to Japan, and having several friends and contacts there, it's extremely easy to get porn manga just about anywhere - it's in convenience stores right next to kid's hobby mags, and I have personally seen little kids rummaging through it. I very much doubt that every konbini in Tokyo is going to rearrange its stock over this, or that the anime industry as a whole is going to be severely curtailed even if they do.
Of course, I'd still prefer that the thing not pass at all.
Another example of them circumventing laws is tentacle porn. It was invented because depictions between two people in any sort of sexual conduct used to be illegal in the country. I guess it sort of stuck after that law was abolished though.

If laws are vague, they generally don't do anything and are just dead-weight on the law-books. So don't worry.

Also, Japan won't ruin its entertainment industry.

Gay and lesbian sex is "Deficient"? Since when to even heterosexual couples marry or have sex solely for procreation? And I'm gonna miss Nanoha if it disappears. Not the transformation sequences so much, but definitely everything else.

Second of all, no Japan's major economical gains are not rooted in the anime industry. Anime in Japan is not a country-wide phenomenon that everyone loves and reads. Anime is read/watched and made in Japan by pretty much the same people that read/watch and make comics here in America. So, no, gutting the industry wouldn't completely destroy Japan and make it explode off the map.

More to the point of the article, censorship is a slippery slope. But, it's definitely one that's necessary to attempt because the alternative is no censorship. This is difficult for a lot of the posters to understand here, mostly because, unless by pure accident, many of them don't have children. If they did, or if they had basic interaction with children outside of the anime world, they'd realize first and foremost that children will get their hands on everything. What's that, mom? Don't buy the comic book called "Yada-yada"? You got it; in no way shape or form will forbiddence turn that into a forever tempting mystery. And if you respond with "Well clearly those are terrible parents who never watch their children" then congratulations, because you sprouted from the ground at the age of 16 or you were shackled to a wall until you were 16. However, you do drastically cut down on the number of children exposed if you take the care to separate what's meant for more adult minds and what's more child-friendly. This is really a non-issue with books, movies, and artwork as long as the packaging isn't overly explicit. Adult books aren't exactly appealing to youngsters as the subject matter usually isn't interesting enough for them to sit through it long enough. Movies can't be bought outright (ZOMG! censorship means I have to be 17 to buy this, or at least look old enough), and a kid can't exactly sit in the aisle of the store and thumb through a movie. Art is interpretive as it is presented in still-form and without context, subject to the observer's mindset. But comic books provide the graphic representation of movies with the easy accessibility of books. So, for the same reason that Playboy and Hustler and packaged in those black plastic bags with the YOU MUST BE 18 TO BUY stamp on them, it's not exactly unreasonable to ask that anime with sexual themes or tones of incest or underage be put towards the back with the adult materials. Christ, Oedipus married and banged his mom by accident, and even he had the decency to put out his own eyes afterwards.
Boom, skip to page 6, and here's some sense.

Now, I'm going to come and say that I am a fan of anime. But really, I don't see a huge deal about this. Yes, it'll probably mean that less projects will get green-lit, but then again, most of the shows that appear season after season are crap. If it means less pandering to 20 somethings in Japan living in their rooms, then I see no real problem with it.

Sheesh Funk, that's big argument you're flaunting there. I loved the fact that you put in a second picture to break up the giant wall of text.

As for my opinion on it... I don't know. This is good, and bad. I think governments need to be vague with stuff like this, because people always find ways to get around it and abuse the system. On the other hand, it allows the government to abuse the system so... the anime industry is fucked either way, really.

FUCK! I heard some talk about this earlier.

If this bill passes it will be time to revolt. This is fucking outrageous, and I will not accept it.
I hate to say this but, Its already passed and be in effect in July 1, but the regulation will be in April 1, from what I read in these sites:

This is more a bill to try and force Neet's and other "freaks" that dont comply with japanese ideals to start acting like "normal" citizens than anything else, the fact anime and manga got caught up in this bill is mainly by association(since only degenerate Neet's and hikikamori's watch late night anime and read manga afterall).
In other words its yet another stupidly missinformed pointless attempt by old farts in power to force there own ways of doing things onto the youth.

Next, they should make a law against furries and take it to the international level. That stuff just creeps me out - not to mention people that are into furry themselves. I might get some nasty comments for this one since there seems to be alot of anime- and furry-inclined people on here at times, but that's freedom of speech for ya guys!

I like how you chose a Nanoha pic for the first one. Honestly, of all the magical girl animes to choose, you picked the one who focuses on actual characterization and storytelling.
And pantyshots of nine-year-old girls. I wouldn't ever watch the first season with company around.

I'm waiting to see how they get around this like they did with the pornos."What's that?We have to censor all penises in our mangas?Well, alright, you're the boss."

And then they went on to give a massive 'fuck you' by putting that little bar at the top.It does nothing to actually hide anything,we all know it's a penis, and yet it still complies with the regulations.

I couldn't care less. I hate Anime, so it isn't in my life in any way whatsoever. Getting rid of it is just fine with me.

Oh noes, this is horrible!!

...is what I would be saying if I actually gave a crap about anime or manga. Which I do not. In point of fact, I have a well known antipathy for the entire medium, so news that potential legislation could cripple the whole darn industry doesn't really have a downside from my perspective. Yay censorship (that undermines things I dislike).
Ever heard this quote?

"They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Edit: Okay guys; I've figured out what's going on here. Japan is going nazi again. Ready the bombs.
Of course I have, but the analogy is flawed because of that tricky bit where Japan is a foreign sovereign nation - it's one thing to stay silent as freedoms are gradually eroded in your country, and another to point and laugh at what foreign governments decide to do. If I do nothing, and indeed, cheer them on, there is no real risk that Japan will start censoring the things that are near and dear to my own heart, or begin curtailing my own freedoms - they can't, I'm not a citizen of Japan and the stuff I like doesn't come from there.

There is no slippery slope here for me, and therefore I find the whole situation hilarious.

Well, I guess I just mistakenly worked off the assumption that you had sympathy with other people's problems.
To extrapolate: I'm not Jewish, and I do not live in Germany. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have tried to stop the Holocaust if I could, just because it wouldn't hurt me.

Edit: And of course we can mention that we shouldn't assume that Japanese political affairs won't affect international opinions with time.

Edit: Wups, seems I might have used the word "extrapolate" in the wrong manner. It was supposed to mean "exaggerate".
