I couldn't care less about the anime & manga industries but legislating morality is never a good idea. Worse still is legislating at the level where parents should be taking action to protect their kids.

Oh noes, this is horrible!!

...is what I would be saying if I actually gave a crap about anime or manga. Which I do not. In point of fact, I have a well known antipathy for the entire medium, so news that potential legislation could cripple the whole darn industry doesn't really have a downside from my perspective. Yay censorship (that undermines things I dislike).
Even if I disliked anime this would be horrible for it is killing a art form.

EDIT: My bad, ignore post.
*cough* if it passes bring the industry to the states, we'll give it a home.

EDIT: or Canada, plenty of room in North America for an Industry such as Anime to thrive in.

Now im curious how much revenue the anime/manga industry brings to Tokyo. If its significant, i'd agree with the assessment that they should all just move out! That would really teach them!

I certainly hope that the 'pack up and move to Osaka' plan is viable.

I'm getting tired of the Government trying to do parents' jobs for them.

Parents need to start taking responsibility, and stop blaming the media, tv, video games, etc. for their failures.
I couldn't agree god damn more.

Did anyone check that this isn't just the work of a disguised Michael Atkinson? Sounds like he's jumped ship to Japan and is no working to uproot everything else he hates.

It was bound to happen eventually. With Japanese anime on one side and the super rigid, super conservative parts of Japanese culture on the other, well, it just had to happen at some point.

Color me unsurprised.

"Freedom to write, freedom to read, freedom to own material that you believe is worth defending means you're going to have to stand up for stuff you don't believe is worth defending, even stuff you find actively distasteful, because laws are big blunt instruments that do not differentiate between what you like and what you don't, because prosecutors are humans and bear grudges and fight for re-election, because one person's obscenity is another person's art." ~Neil Gaiman.

If we're gonna cry out against censorship, we gotta go all the way. The enemy of your enemy is not your friend, and even if they censor shit you hate, that does not mean you stand idly by. If you cannot protect something you don't care about, how can you protect something you do care about?
Excellent response there, sir. I was struggling to come up with something un-crazy to say about the whole "fucking weeaboos" and "anime suxors, who gives a shit" posts, but you summed it up quite well.

Potentially gutting an industry for the sake of censorship is an outrageous, morally blind act of injustice. The fact that it's of Japanese animation and comic books is irrelevant.

I like how you chose a Nanoha pic for the first one. Honestly, of all the magical girl animes to choose, you picked the one who focuses on actual characterization and storytelling.

Much ado about nothing. What has happened since the big outrage since the videogame trial? Nothing, and exactly the same thing is gonna happen here.

The loli junkies are still going to get their fix one way or another.

Last i checked he went to america to spend time with his lord and master: Jack Thompson.

OT: I already commented on this on another thread so i won't bother repeating myself to much. However, i will say that the bill is bloody stupid. I like anime alot, and i would rather not see it censored...What happened to you Japan? You used to be cool!

FUCK! I heard some talk about this earlier.

If this bill passes it will be time to revolt. This is fucking outrageous, and I will not accept it.

Ever heard this quote?

"They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Pastor Martin Niemöller

Edit: Okay guys; I've figured out what's going on here. Japan is going nazi again. Ready the bombs.

y'know, I'm really wondering how this could affect some of my fav series and works like Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal, Black Lagoon, Claymore, Berserk, Vampire Hunter D, Evangelion, the works of the late Satoshi Kon, and tons others. This is once again a case of someone in power doing what he can to censor stuff not because he believes it's good for the people, but because HE JUST DOESN'T LIKE THIS. Though the last time stuff like this actually worked was the Comics Code Authority and that was back in the fifties.

This was on the Evening News where I live, if we ban violent video games why not ban news from being told?

First of all, I'll start with this sentence here by inserting something I don't care about and something I do care about into the proper places; then we'll see how this inspiring sentence sounds.

If you cannot protect Ted Bundy, how can you protect your child?

Second of all, no Japan's major economical gains are not rooted in the anime industry. Anime in Japan is not a country-wide phenomenon that everyone loves and reads. Anime is read/watched and made in Japan by pretty much the same people that read/watch and make comics here in America. So, no, gutting the industry wouldn't completely destroy Japan and make it explode off the map.

More to the point of the article, censorship is a slippery slope. But, it's definitely one that's necessary to attempt because the alternative is no censorship. This is difficult for a lot of the posters to understand here, mostly because, unless by pure accident, many of them don't have children. If they did, or if they had basic interaction with children outside of the anime world, they'd realize first and foremost that children will get their hands on everything. What's that, mom? Don't buy the comic book called "Yada-yada"? You got it; in no way shape or form will forbiddence turn that into a forever tempting mystery. And if you respond with "Well clearly those are terrible parents who never watch their children" then congratulations, because you sprouted from the ground at the age of 16 or you were shackled to a wall until you were 16. However, you do drastically cut down on the number of children exposed if you take the care to separate what's meant for more adult minds and what's more child-friendly. This is really a non-issue with books, movies, and artwork as long as the packaging isn't overly explicit. Adult books aren't exactly appealing to youngsters as the subject matter usually isn't interesting enough for them to sit through it long enough. Movies can't be bought outright (ZOMG! censorship means I have to be 17 to buy this, or at least look old enough), and a kid can't exactly sit in the aisle of the store and thumb through a movie. Art is interpretive as it is presented in still-form and without context, subject to the observer's mindset. But comic books provide the graphic representation of movies with the easy accessibility of books. So, for the same reason that Playboy and Hustler and packaged in those black plastic bags with the YOU MUST BE 18 TO BUY stamp on them, it's not exactly unreasonable to ask that anime with sexual themes or tones of incest or underage be put towards the back with the adult materials. Christ, Oedipus married and banged his mom by accident, and even he had the decency to put out his own eyes afterwards.

TL;DR: I'm sorry your favorite anime character has the body and face of a 6 year old but is supposed to be 28 and dresses like she's 17 and mad at her parents. Take a picture of a woman, let's say 25 for good measure, send it in to your favorite anime author and say, "This is how they're supposed to look like." And for good measure, do the same with a picture of a 28 year old man too because I'm pretty sure they all got stuck in the 6-15 age range.

Btw the gunman missed all of his shots. Security shot him then he shot himself.
