Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake, Tsunami headed towards Hawaii

Anyway, I'm watching fox news right now and there's hawaiins watching for it on the coast. Stupid.

Chilean here, was awake when the earthquake struck. Lasted about one minute and a half, with about 30 seconds of really hard movement. Good thing is, my apartment suffered no structural damage. Only some shattered glasses.

The hot-zone right now is Concepción, on the south. The epicenter was near there, and to my knowledge the city is utter chaos. Building 15 stories tall cut in half, fires everywhere. The fire department is collapsed from all the ensuing disaster.

It must be hell living there. What about tsunamies though?

Well, I guess it's simple plate tectonics.

If the earthquake happens underwater and at a subduction zone, the 'snap' that causes the earthquake also lifts one of the plates (the ocean floor) locally, thereby lifting the whole water column above it, creating a giant wave.

people aren't going to leave their homes and all their belongings because of the threat of a tsunami.
their entire lives have been built there, it's not stupid to want to stand by that. if they stay, at least they can do their best to protect their homes and maybe rebuild their towns.
also, if the tsunami doesnt hit, their homes will still most likely be ransacked and robbed in the ensuing frenzy.

The fact that he said 'not that I would anyway' disregards any care with or without a warning. makes it pretty ruthless.

And seriously, such levels of death and destruction is always going to be a tragedy. Sure, they can get a warning, but take New Orleans for example... you think that it's easy to evacuate an entire fucking city? What about those that can't afford it? Not to mention they still lose their homes.

That its funny how apathetic humans are. $5 and caring for 2 months about an impoverish nation like Haiti shows me how meek a helping Chile will get. Not to mention the next time Haiti gets hit by an annual hurricain.

Thats my thoughts. I'm angry at the half assed aid. Help yourself sleep at night. Care not where any aid goes. Care not how your nation treats that country during normal times.

As for new orlens, Did the people in the city not have days if not weeks they were warned that the levi's could not and would not hold back the surge of water from the ocean, I DO NOT feel bad for them, sure they would have left stuff behind if they legged it, but they wouldnt have been in the center of the storm now would they? and they would have lost their stuff anyways. I feel sorry for the dead and the homeless. Showing empathy is not being 'on a high horse'.
