What interests me, although obviously this is terrible and I feel awful for the poor Chileans, is that earthquake damage with all its splendour pales in comparison to disease. The Black Death killed half of Europe, taking almost 80% of the population of the Mediterranean nations with it. I wonder what's causing all the earthquakes right now? I guess they could be unrelated, but we should hope that is the case and that these aren't being triggered by something.
Congress won't pass the health care bill :p jk

This isn't meant to start a war on global warming, but I'm pretty sure this is what scientists said would happen when global warming started to do some serious damage. At least it isn't up to Day After Tomorrow point.... yet.

Earthquake in Haiti, landslide near Portugal, floods in France and an earthquake in Chile. Many dead.

Guess what happened in Britain?

Yorkshire flooded a bit and a woman in a Range Rover (cue the Galactic Empire music) drove it where she shouldn't have and died... makes us seem pathetic doesn't it?

Anyways, a universal writ of condolence to all those poor countries in which people have actually died without it being their own fault.

Although, I'm not sure if anyone else has, I have noticed a disturbing trend between British people getting hurt and Portugal.

As well as that horrible Madeleine McCann case, someone jumped off a hotel with his kids, and other people drowned. Then there was that landslide in which British people went missing, and just when I thought it was over, the news about Chile, when stating missing British people (we don't like Britain much do we?), mentioned one, who was with her "Portuguese husband".

It's starting to disturb me.

Have any overly-religious people blamed it on God's judgement yet?
Well, you asked, so...here you go. [http://open.salon.com/blog/the_desperate_blogger/2010/02/27/robertson_god_even_angrier_with_chile_than_haiti] (Actually, this is a parody.)

And of course, there's the WBC, but let's not bring them up again...

Oh for Go- I mean Pete's sake. I honestly thought we had matured as a species.

The main problem with Chile is that not enough people have died for celebrities to lead an "outpouring of grief".

In all seriousness, what has happened is terrible, let's be thankful no more have died.

Chilean here, was awake when the earthquake struck. Lasted about one minute and a half, with about 30 seconds of really hard movement. Good thing is, my apartment suffered no structural damage. Only some shattered glasses.

The hot-zone right now is Concepción, on the south. The epicenter was near there, and to my knowledge the city is utter chaos. Building 15 stories tall cut in half, fires everywhere. The fire department is collapsed from all the ensuing disaster.
It must be hell living there. What about tsunamies though?
Didn't the evacuation tell them to stay away from the coast, and didn't President Obama say to listen to the evacuation orders.
I live in Santiago, where the earthquake was about 7.2 richter (and Santiago is mediterranean, for the record). What sucks is that a goverment screw up discarded a tsunami as a possibility, and told everyone that there was no need to worry. A few hours later, the coastal towns were devastated by the ensuing tsunami. Obviously the outrage was massive.

Well, at least the government apologised and sent the military to help, that summed up with the help of the rest of the country (official or otherwise). Military police were deployed too, because of the pillaging and stealing. The problem is that not everybody is pillaging because of need (the food supplies were non-existant on the first days), so you have fucking assholes that disguise themselves in the crowds, seeking only LCD Widescreens and Surround sound systems. Theres even a thread on my countrys biggest online forum that has many photos of these guys in the floor with their hand behind their heads, with soldiers pointing G3 battle rifles to their heads. The thread is incredibly popular, for obvious reasons.

No, but ironically they thank God they're alive, while suppousedly he's the one that began this mess.

Looks like somebody is making good use of H.A.A.R.P. lately. I wonder who.
Yeah, the conspiranoics (Conspiracy + Paranoics) already said this was "their" fault.

Man that's tragic, I really hope a lot of people can be saved by at least being aware of the tsunami. But of course disasters happen, the world isn't something we can ever take for granted so any small chance to prepare ahead of time is always a plus.

Those guys chose to live on an island. If they get hit by a tsunami it is their own fault.
Silly logic to be honest.

Maybe they live there because they were born there, not because they chose it. Maybe they don't have money to leave. I certainly don't have money to live anywhere else apart from where I do now, if a natural disaster hit my city I would just have to grin and bear it because I'm poor. Not everyone is a rich kid with unlimited credit and the ability to travel wherever they want on a whim.
Sorry to tell you but... Everyone has the ability to go somewhere else. Even on an island you can catch a ride with someone or make a raft. If you're not on an island you can simply walk or catch a free ride on the highway.
Making a raft probably isn't the best tsunami-avoidance strategy I've ever heard...
They live on an island, should have expected a tsunami to come eventually. If they left on their raft before now it would have been fine.
