Can anyone explain how something like this happens?

WARNING EXTREMELY DISTURBING VIDEO

Would this happen in a western country? I actually want to say more but I am actually quite speechless.

So a van driver runs over a toddler and now all 1 billion of his countrymen "have no soul?"

The Chinese don't have a collective conciousness, they aren't the borg. They're humans like us you know....

And yes, this kind of thing can happen in any country, Western or Eastern, because humans, irrespective of race and culture, can be really stupid and/or really evil.

Only here on the Escapist would people defend what happened. Truly, only here at the Escapist.

That wasn't it, the child was ran over by a van, and was left there for hours with a constant stream of traffic walking by, noticing the dying or dead baby girl and just walking by, only one guy pulled her from the side of the road to stop being in the way of traffic. It wasn't until the girls mother came by and picked her body up.

I think this reminds me of the book the Jungle, where at one point of the book the main characters toddler son falls of a street and gets caught in the flooded street and dies (the sewer system there wasn't existent for the most part so it was just a huge stream in the middle of the road). While if you came by these poor people and wonder why they value money above their own livelihood the book shows how this comes to be. Northern America experienced this rapid change and things like this probably happened during the Industrial revolution much like in Europe. The problem is that their jobs and their own lives to people tend to be more important than others.

I can't tell if this is someone using the death of a child to troll, or if you are honestly using this tragedy as support for your racism. Either way, it's horrid.

Not a single person above you is defending the man who ran the kid over. Every single poster above you is saying that YOU are wrong by calling the Chinese soulless. This shit does happen in Western Countries on a monthly basis. Hell, we even do worse things then that. Do I need to break out the video of the homeless man who was attacked and then ignored by pedestrians for over an hour? One person actually stopped in front of the man, took out his phone and took a picture before walking on.

I'd like to think Imus doesn't support the beating because he chose to be homeless. I'd like to think that.

This.
The bystander effect is well documented and can be found across all nationalities. There was a story about 20 years ago in Taiwan where a high school girl was run over and killed. Her body was left in the middle of the road (with cars driving over it as if it wasn't there) for more than a day until her parents filed a missing person report and the cops found the corpse. So yeah, people are capable of insane shit anywhere. This is not really a rare or racially exclusive occurrence. Well, except maybe in Canada. Canadians are crazy like that.

Again, not defending. But really, as fucked up as this is, it's almost... expected.

Actually the whole story behind the Bystander Effect is another good example, since it involves a murder with about 40 witnesses and not a single one of them even bothering to call the cops.

I feel the need to point out that the bystander effect is not callousness. When horrible shit happens we have a very hard time believing it. I once ignored a burning house, because I could not believe that it was actually on fire. Sure I saw smoke, but someone was standing in the front yard. Nobody would just stand there while their house burned, would they? And if there really was a fire, nobody would just hang around without calling 911, would they?

I have no idea if that person had called the fire department or not. I have no idea if I could have made a difference by pulling out my cell and calling 911, just to be sure. All I know is that the next day there was a dumpster out front filled with burned stuff from inside the house.

I didn't see smoke and think "meh, let the fucker burn." I saw it and thought "no, this isn't possible, I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing." I imagine that when confronted with a body in the street, many people similarly think "I can't possibly be seeing what I think I'm seeing." It's horrible, but there's no villain when this kind of psychology comes into play.

Some people are monsters (that van driver is pretty clearly among them) but most aren't. We just can't process things like this, so we don't react the way we should. We convince ourselves that it is not happening. It's easy to misinterpret that as callousness until it happens to you.

I'm kind of creeped out that a thread was made about a two year old getting run over by a van in order to steer conversation towards a nationality "not having a soul," and even more creeped out that the OP rushed to interpret the first three posts as defensive before indicting the escapist community collectively as defenders of all that is wrong in the world. All that said, because I'm not the first person to say it I think I'm clear in saying that OP be trollin'.

Do I need to start linking some WTFIWWY? This stuff isn't exclusive to China. It happens everywhere. Were you asleep when the reports of the horrible stuff happening during the London riots were making the rounds?

Nah, New Yorkers just have no soul. Especially the ones from Queens.

I'm pretty sure most places would call you out on overgeneralizing from one single case, and many would even mention the psychology involved. And those places that would not are shit.

@Imus69

It is called the bystander effect. The murder of Kitty Genovese is a good example of how it can happen in America. Apparently about a dozen people witnessed the events leading up to the murder in New York and at least a couple of people saw her actually get stabbed. One lady called the cops about five minutes after the fact and Kitty died in the ambulance.

Also, just two years ago, there was that girl that got gang raped at a high school dance.

Another example would be the whole Trail of Tears thing, that was REALLY fucked up and no one really raised a fuss over it. Oh, and the fucking holocaust. That was pretty awful too.

I'm sorry I know not all of China is like this but when I came across the video I just flew off the handle. So these are my questions.

Why was she not helped? She wasn't being attacked like other cases shown above.
Why was she moved like a sack of garbage off to the side of the street without being helped further?
Why did the driver of the first van stop and then almost peel out on her?
Why did the driver of the second van run her over like a dead animal?
Why did the van hit her in the first place? It was parked and then drove right into her. You would have to be blind to not see her.
What the hell were her parents doing?
Is this common in China?
Are women really considered worthless in China?
