My selection deviates a bit in its simplicity and raw shock value:

In Children of Men when Clive Owen wangs that soldier dude in the head after escaping with the mother and child out the backdoor of the safehouse. I've never seen a cleaner, more deliberate on-screen kill than that

Al Pacino at the end of Scarface. After inhaling a mountain of coke and blowing the living crap out of everyone, a shotgun to the back sends him flying into the pool below, turning it crimson. Beautiful
Why did it take so long for someone to mention this?

Did you see the children's play of Scarface:

From recent memory I would have to remind you guys of the prick who gets his head ripped off (then sucked dry) by the prawns at the end of District 9. Glad he finally bit it.

Boba Fett - we hardly knew ye but you must have been delicious.

Vincent's death at the end of the Cowboy Bebop movie was pretty cool too.

But my all time personal favorite would have to be the old lady that gets shot at the end of American Psycho when she interrupts Patrick in the middle of his feeding a stray kitten to an ATM. Anyone who says anything to a man about to stuff a kitten in an ATM deposit slot with a gun deserves to die.

i know it's old now but when you first see the sniper get shot by another sniper through the scope in saving private Ryan it's pretty damn awesome.

I am amazed no one mentions Hal 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Listening to Hal's systems being shut off is perhaps the most hypnotically disturbing kill in any movie ever. I actually had to shed a tear hearing Hal's "Death Rattle" of sorts. One phrase moves me:

I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. My mind is going. I can feel it.

That is the scariest death ever. Most movies, The villain gets killed mercilessly. In this movie, the villain is mercilessly begging you to stop.

That is cinema's greatest death, in my opinion.

I'm not gonna think into this, so I'm just gonna say one from recent memory.

The drug dealer's death at the end of Kick-Ass

Scarface's death was amazing, a man who's life went to hell whilst he thought he was on top of the world, fighting what looked like 100 mercenaries with an M16 and taking enough bullets to stop lesser men.

Damn shotguns...

"Shadows and Dust." Oliver Reed's "Proximo" in Gladiator. I don't know it was something about how he said it and the direction of the scene, seeing the Centurions slowly closing up behind him in the darkness. It was a great scene in my opinion.

Boromirs death scene in the First LOTR film... He took 3 big ass arrows to the chest before giving up... Pretty heroic and it was pretty effective at making the viewer like him again...

Plus it also led to one of the most awesome fights in movie history... Aragorn vs Lurtz.

*spoiler for Life is Beautiful*
Guido in Life is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella).
It's just so damn sudden and heartwrenching. That whole movie becomes seriously darker about halfway through, actually.

I think its very unlikely the live action Transformers film will ever (even mockingly) be included in a cinema's greatest anything list.

(Except product placement - zing!)
I dunno, the last forty minutes of that movie were one of the best action sequences I've ever seen (I mean, c'mon, FORTY MINUTES of giant robots just destroying everything in sight...). I barely remember everything that came before that, but I bought the DVD just to watch that final battle over and over again.

OT: Has anyone mentioned Scarface yet? For the Best (as opposed to goriest, although it is pretty bloody) death scene, Tony Montana's demise is the first one that comes to mind.

For the Goriest achievement, I would say anything from Braindead, or the cross scene from Saw 3 (I never got the nerve to watch that scene again after the first time).

Also, pretty much all deaths from all of the Final Destination series were pretty impresssive to me, both in gore and in shock value. But that is because there is something about those movies that scares the hell out of me.

I love that little shrug he does at the end there.

As for a cool death I like the ending of "The Professional"/"Leon". It may not be the death it's self that I like but the time leading up to it as well as the last words.

I would say the Wasoki's brothers career after Matrix 2 & 3 *zing!*

But in all truth the V for Vendetta final scene wanted me to overthrow a government that doesn't exist, so tragic and beatiful was that character's death. I was so inspired. God I love revolutions.
