Best animated deaths:
The Iron Giant
Ellie in the opening scene of Up
Both heart-wrenching.
Nerd vote: Spock at the end of Star Trek 2. The monologue is repeated by Vulcan wanna-be's the world over, but it was Kirk's eulogy that got lampooned by Family Guy, and the very final scene of the film where they pan down to the planet and show the coffin and the James Horner music swells... absolutely brilliant piece of film. Are we taking votes for best funeral ever?
A recent favorite is George Kirk in the opening of Star Trek. Again it's not the moment of death so much as the scene in context, where they fade the sound with his wife's scream echoing, and push it way down in favor of a genius Giacchino score that turns a chaotic scene of sci-fi spaceship mayhem into a noble and poignant moment, and then they use the baby cry to fade the sound back in and start the dialogue back up. Gets me every time.
In that regard, it's similar to the aforementioned scene in Up, where there is no dialogue between Carl and Ellie through the whole sequence. Both tell a wonderful story with visuals, and both ABSOLUTELY NEED the music to set the mood (also both Giacchino scores).
... I think I just turned this from a Great Deaths thread into a Great Use of Soundtracks thread.
