For me...

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

Time to die."

Greatest death of all time? When Paris Hilton got drilled by a spear in House of Wax ofcourse...such a shame it was only a movie.. ;)
I'm totally with you on the scene. I think the only better one was everyone who died in Eli ROth's Hostel.

I think that Tom Hank dieing in Saving Private Ryan was very very sad.quote]

In Saving Private Ryan I thought the saddest seen in that movie was when the on soldier near the end is fighting a german soldier hand to hand. He loses and is slowly stabbed in the heart. I was on the edge of my bed at that part.

one of the most badass deaths i've seen is the end of kill bill vol 2. the moment Kido lands the killing blow the hate and vile between the characters is over. they have a loving and heartfelt goodbye and then bill gets up (knowing this will lead to his death) and takes ten steps before falling over dead. It's very samuria. once the deed is done the past no longer matters. Kido and bill were lovers again and then bill gets up and walks to his death.. Brillant!

Best animated deaths:

The Iron Giant
Ellie in the opening scene of Up

Both heart-wrenching.

Nerd vote: Spock at the end of Star Trek 2. The monologue is repeated by Vulcan wanna-be's the world over, but it was Kirk's eulogy that got lampooned by Family Guy, and the very final scene of the film where they pan down to the planet and show the coffin and the James Horner music swells... absolutely brilliant piece of film. Are we taking votes for best funeral ever?

A recent favorite is George Kirk in the opening of Star Trek. Again it's not the moment of death so much as the scene in context, where they fade the sound with his wife's scream echoing, and push it way down in favor of a genius Giacchino score that turns a chaotic scene of sci-fi spaceship mayhem into a noble and poignant moment, and then they use the baby cry to fade the sound back in and start the dialogue back up. Gets me every time.

In that regard, it's similar to the aforementioned scene in Up, where there is no dialogue between Carl and Ellie through the whole sequence. Both tell a wonderful story with visuals, and both ABSOLUTELY NEED the music to set the mood (also both Giacchino scores).

... I think I just turned this from a Great Deaths thread into a Great Use of Soundtracks thread. :(

wait that was real life...... oh
TOO SOON. But not really.

My vote goes for the death of Tyler Durden in Fight club, because it still doesn't make sense to me.

when Edward Nortons charcter shoots himself in the face, he destroys his cheek/neck. Yet the bullet wound to Durden is in his forehead, anyone shed light on that for me?
Durden had the back of his head blown off, which is (I believe) possible to achieve by sticking a gun in your mouth, much like how Norton's character had done.

Stelios from 300 had one of the most bad-ass deaths of movie history. As for the moving, emotional aspect, Elias' death scene from 'Platoon' and most of the deaths (the important ones) from 'Moon Child' are some of the best.

Elias dying in Platoon was pretty awesome.

Also Mercutio's death scene in Romeo + Juliet was really well done I've always thought.
mercutios death was a very good seen indeed(A PLAGUE ON BOTH YOUR HOUSE'S!)

my pick would have too be(since i cannot think of a really good one right now) the rain of arrows in 300 that kills Leo.

Patrick Swayze. No wait, Heath Ledger.

Noooo, David Carradine. Autoerotic asphyxiation for the win.

Wait, I've got this wrong, haven't I?

Paris Hilton's death in "House of Wax" was oddly satisfying.

Other than that, (apologies for any spoilers):
- Rorschach in Watchmen
- The Spartans' last stand in 300
- Mufasa in The Lion King, (c'mon, don't tell me that didn't effect you.)
- Sergeant Elias in Platoon
- Tony fucking Montana in Scarface

You guys have mentioned some good ones though. The Independance Day self-sacrafice one is a good'n. I feel I should also mention Donald Gennaro's death in Jurassic Park as it was my first childhood introductio to cinematic death.. apart from Disney movies which never really register.

Oh and on that, Eddie Carr's death in The Lost World was pretty cool since he was so awesome in keeping his foot on the accelerator to save Jeff Goldblum and co.

Man, I keep remembering good ones.

Darth Vader.
Cheesy sure, but I mean, the dark lord of the sith that just killed his former master and saw the man his son has become. All he wanted to see him with his own eyes

Shane in Shane. Yes he dies.

Kikuchiyo in Seven Samurai. Bare-arsed.

Miles Dyson in Terminator 2.

The end of All Quiet on the Western Front.

Now for a shocking and distubing death scene. The Blind Piano teacher in Suspiria.
