Circumcision: a Pillar of American ignorance

At this point in out modern society, there is little justification for such an act, yet America continues this ridiculous practice, for largely cosmetic reasons, along with the ideology, "I was, so my son will be". Is this not insane? It is absurd to perform surgery based on cosmetic reasons unless of some horrible deformity or mutilation. Besides, the foreskin offers more pleasure, and keeps the head lubricated. Many people perform this act, because they do no know the alternative, and that is truly tragic. Throughout Eurasia, and the rest of the world circumcision is on the decline, because people have recognized these truths for over half a century. The only reason (Outside of religion), is that is can reduce the chances of catching HIV, something that has been huge problem within 3rd-world countries, but why not offer condoms instead of a permanent surgical solution, reintroduce the female condom, an older tool originally intended to offer women the tool necessary to keep themselves safe. What say you? This is not an attack, only an outcry.

"So what did you do this Christmas?"

"Oh you know, the usual, had turkey for dinner, watched movies with the family around an open fire, then I logged into an internet forum to discuss the cosmetic value of minor surgery in altering male genitalia."

On topic, I'm European, and I wouldn't bother with it on my children, and I've never heard of anyone getting circumsised (or anywhere that does that) Over here that really isn't a tradition at all. It would pretty much be like suggesting you cut off your middle toe.

Uh-oh

Seriously, for your sake just don't go there. I made the mistake of getting into a debate on circumcision on YouTube and the hate directed at me was unbelievable. I know it's a lot more nuanced here on the Escapist but still, it just isn't worth it.

Yes, it's disgusting that they cut their newborn children, and the HIV preventing effect is debatable.
You wouldn't let me cut the earlobes off my children or remove their toenails, so please stop cutting your own kids.
There's really not a lot else to say on the matter. It's bad, mkay?

I mean, I'm circumcised and i don't want to be, and i never will be able to undo what was done to me. Unless of course, that one Swedish scientist works magic with stem cells.

In the Penn & Teller Bullshit episode on circumcision (You should be able to find it online), they do actually show off a couple of guys who have managed to grow back their foreskin. (NSFW)

They did so by pulling on it daily. I believe it is accepted as a method that works, actually.
It has a wikipedia page, in fact.

Yeah, but it's not like its the real thing, you'll never get the actual nerve endings back, which is kind of the point, besides the obvious moral questionabillity

If you think circumcision is bad, at least you haven't spent the last week researching female genital mutilation.

Shit's illegal in many countries for a reason.

Yeah, you'd have a hard time restoring 100% functionality.
I'd still think it's better than nothing, but it looks like it requires a lot of dedication and work.

And start using the quote button, man.

I'd really like it if we as a species started differentiating between types of mutilation by the seriousness of the act instead of the sex of the person it is performed on.

You know, I lived with a couple of Jewish guys for a while, and they said that circumcision never bothered them, never affected their 'sensitivity' during sex, and they were quite glad they never had to deal with smegma/knob cheese/whatever you like to call it.

I mean, circumcised kids don't have it all bad. Anyone who, for whatever reason, has had to make do without a shower for a week will testify that an unwashed, uncircumcised penis is about the most revolting thing in the world.

And there's a very good reason parents prefer to have their children snipped at childhood rather than choosing it when they're adults. Circumcision for baby boys heals quickly, and the child is too young to remember it. Adult circumcision requires stitches around the end of your penis, and you're going to remember every single second during which your cock was rendered out of service because it has just been sewn up after an operation.
Isn't that a small price to pay for increased sexual pleasure? Especially if it means that the end of your penis won't look like drier than the dirt of the Mojave Wasteland after twenty years of subsistence farming, i mean obviously i'm using hyperbole, but convenience is any more valid an argument than, cosmetics. Besides Smegma is an all natural, anti-bacterial anti-viral lube, what more could you ask for in a lubricant?

Hmm. I didn't get a circumcision because the nurse pulled the wrong thingy when they were going to cut the umbilical cord. Works fine though.

I didn't know there were any negative effects to circumcisions, but I guess I'm wrong.

Wonderful Christmas conversation here.
OT: I'm circumcised and I wonder about uncircumcised guys claiming that it's more pleasurable during sex. How do they know? Have they been circumcised in adulthood after having sex? If so, circumcision made it less pleasurable because the neurons that were receiving signal from the foreskin no longer have input. If you're circumcised as a baby those neurons would never have been assigned to "willy pleasure reception" in the first place so they can be used elsewhere, like the head of the penis. Seriously, I would not want more sensitivity in my penis during sex, it's awesome as is.

Woo! Uncut guys unite!

Seriously, putting blades, scissors, anything sharp and painful in order to cut a penis is just cruel and wrong and should never be done ever. I just hand this conversation with my gf and the guys at my table, and I'm so glad its an american-only thing. For some reason, they dont see whats inherently fucked up and wrong with it like the rest of the world does. They find it more attractive but only because they are more used to it. And they just don't see how bizarre it is to have you penis being chopped. Its just, its just wrong!
