Replacing the film that has been listed as the BFI's Sight and Sound magazine "greatest film of all time" for the last 50 years is Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. The poll has been constructed from 846 distributors, critics, academics and writers and personally i think this choice is far better (Massive Hitchcock fan)

I think there is only 1 Gif that can sum this up TBH

The Dark Knight Rises is the best movie of all time. The only black and white movie I liked was Shindlers List.

It never was the "Best Movie of All Time".
Significant? Landmark? Yes.

Best? Pretentious nonsense.

Schindler's List was made in the 90's. It doesn't count :p

Well, these votes don't mean much to the average joe. They certainly don't mean anything to me.

I love Citizen Kane as it's a beautiful and deeply meaningful film that does things only film can do.

I love the Dark Knight for the same exact reasons.

I love Ocarina of Time because it's a beautiful and deeply meaningful videogame that does things only a game can do.

True; But now if us average joe's has somehow got into some fancy upper crust doo, and we hear someone say "Well Citizen Cane is the best film ever muuuur " we can now go "Well actually muuuuur it is Vertigo muuuurrrruuuu" .... These Muuurrr are the sounds posh people make whilst talking.

Citizen Kane is good, but it's not even the black and white movie I've seen. Vertigo, Rear Window, On the Waterfront, Yojimbo, the Maltese Falcon, and A Night at the Opera were all more enjoyable movies in my book.

It's certainly ambitious and dramatic, but it's also fairly absurd. My favorite is how every once in a while the American Film Institute will wheel out some old people to defend their pick against decades of better writing and filmmaking advances.

Vertigo?
The one about the weirdo detective that ends with some lady falling off a church with no real denouement? Yea, I know there's more than that, but all I could help but think when I was watching Vertigo was how much cinema had improved since then as far as pacing and story telling were concerned. Very important to film's development as a medium, but ultimately a story that felt dated in it's delivery.
Why do these institutions keep trying to numerically rank and therefore quantify these movies? Isn't it enough that they're all good in one way or another?

Being the most popular does not mean best. The fact that the title of "Best" movie can shift between two movies that have been out for decades should show how utterly subjective this assertion is.

NO, WE MUST QUANTIFY EVERYTHING. But on a more serious note, yeah I?m not even slightly sure how one could call a film "the best", also it's kind of weird that "people" have changed their minds over a movie that has been out for 54 years.

I don't think I would say movie pacing has really progressed, because Hitchcock tended to use a slower pace to increase the atmosphere (and to great affect). And i mean look at TDKR, personally i felt that movie has some of the worst pacing i've seen for a long time in such a major hit (At least for the first 30-40 minutes).

I have yet to see any of these movies. I too used to newer films, so I find these gems slow paced.

All opinion, as far as I'm concerned. To me, the best movie I've ever seen is Gangs of New York.

My brother's favorite movie is Gladiator.

My father's favorite movie is Gunga Din.

Whoever wrote that list? Their opinion is that Vertigo is the best film ever made.

How do you know they're slow paced if you've never seen them?
