I constantly get told how wrong I am but Citizen Kane does not stand the test of time and is boring. I get that it was revolutionary for film, I get that the acting and cinematography was impressive, I get it's importance in the history of cinema but fuck me did it drag on.

But opinion is subjective. I wouldn't make a call on what the best movie is. I don't even have a personal best movie. I have a favourite movie, but that's different.

(Jurassic Park if anyone was wondering.)

This. Forever this.

IMHO the "Best Movie" ever goes to A Clockwork Orange.
Nothing can beat the glory of that movie.
Ever seen Pulp Fiction?
Own it. Not as good as ACO in my opinion. Great writing and good visuals, yes but it doesn't reach to me in the same way that ACO does.
I strangely connect with the psychopath that Alex is in ACO.

*Whew*. I was afraid it was going to say it had been replaced with Titanic or something.

There is, of course, going to be some give and take in our opinions about movies, especially older ones. I had heard so much about Casablanca, for example, that when I finally actually saw the thing all the "good parts" were discussed to death, the famous lines felt like cliches (even though I knew the movie had originated them), and what was left was rather thin soup that hadn't aged particularly well. ("You'll have to do the thinking for both of us?" Sweet mother of mercy...!)

But by contrast, Sunset Boulevard has aged extremely well, and feels quite modern- ironically, for a film that centers around an actress made obsolete by the age of "talkies". I would recommend that one to just about anyone without reservations.

Citizen Kane or Vertigo?

Hahahahaha, nice one, now where are the real options?

I feel like I'm the only person in this thread that liked Citizen Kane. And I'm not even a big fan of old movies. Granted, it's not the best movie of all time, but it's easily one of the most influential, and has certainly stood the test of time far better than most movies from that era.

I haven't seen Vertigo, but I must say that I didn't enjoy The Birds, which is the only Hitchcock movie I've ever seen.

Off topic, but I must add that while Fight Club is an excellent movie, it really pales in comparison to the book, and this is coming from somebody that watched the movie first and is a much bigger fan of cinema than literature.

I've already forgotten the plot to Vertigo and I only watched it about half a year ago. I'm curious what about the film qualifies it as such a masterpiece.

Also what was the method used by this poll? Tick the one you like the most from this list of predecided films? And who was it sent out to? The Alfred Hitchcock appreciation society?

In the Casablanca commentary Roger Ebert said that if you asked him what the greatest movie of all time is he'd say Citizen Kane, but if you asked him what movie he liked the best, he just might say Casablanca.

Not only is it subjective in terms of the movie but it is also subjective in how you define 'greatest'.

What's up with all these so-called best movies being made prior to the 21st century?

Geez, I'm pretty sure directors of today aren't dumber than those of the past!

I'm pretty sure we all just became more cynical.

Audible sigh.

EDIT: That's the problem about critics deciding what's best, it's all a matter of opinion; I know this because I'm a human, and I'm pretty sure so are critics.

Replacing the film that has been listed as the BFI's Sight and Sound magazine "greatest film of all time" for the last 50 years is Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. The poll has been constructed from 846 distributors, critics, academics and writers and personally i think this choice is far better (Massive Hitchcock fan)

I think there is only 1 Gif that can sum this up TBH

Sorry, that movie hasn't been best of all time since 1999, when Accepted came out. If you haven't watched it, do so. If you haven't been to college, I don't expect you to understand.

Hurray! Someone else who enjoyed TDKR as much as me. I don't know if it's my favorite movie of all time but I don't think I have an absolute favorite. Definitely tied for first though (along with TDK and several other movies).

I haven't seen many of these older movies but I was forced to watch Citizen Kane in my Media Awareness class in high school. I almost cried of boredom. I understand how the filming techniques for the time were nothing short of spectacular but the plot itself was really nothing special at all.

I have enjoyed some of Hitchcock's films but I haven't seen Vertigo. I might have to check it out.

Citizen Kane was never the best movie. It was certainly up there. Possibly top 5 in my opinion. But best ever? Disagree. I also disagree that Vertigo is the best ever. In my opinion 2001: A Space Odyssey is the best movie ever made. My top 5 movies ever made will have to be:
1. Space Odyssey
2. The Godfather
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. Star Wars: Episode 5
5. Pulp Fiction

The Dark Knight Rises is no where near the best. The Dark Knight was much better and I wouldn't even put that near the top.

Funny and true. I can understand it has importance to the industry, but that doesnt mean I will like it...

Vertigo, however, I enjoy.

Dear god sir i hope you are joking..... or well, thats just very sad, sad indeed.
Yes, because personal opinions are always wrong if i don't like them. Why? BECAUSE OF REASONS!
Dude, chill, it is sad, it really is. Be less defensive.

I still need to see both of these films. But for me atleast the best film ever made is Patton. Its the only three hour movie I can watch again and again and again and George C Scott's performance is simply perfect and what amazes me most is that it hasn't aged a day. My favorite black and white film is easily Sergeant York.

It's hard for me to say much since I've never seen Citizen Kane, but I love Vertigo (and most of Hitchcock's work frankly) so I'll roll with it. A lot of those critics though seem to really dig 2001: A Space Odyssey as well though and I've never been a big of Kubrick.
