As long as it keeps people talking about Citizen Kane and Vertigo I'm happy. Both are amazing pieces of storytelling and should be remembered. Far too many people have neglected older films.
Citizen Kane is an amazing piece of
film making which revolutionized this and set the precedent for that and yada yada yada, but unfortunately the story itself is kind of crappy compared to pretty much everything else about it. It's probably the single most important/significant ever, but as far as being watchable or enjoyable or able to be appreciated, especially for a modern audience (other than people with the background to appreciate it), it's a bit lacking.
There's not really much chance of the really well known ones being forgotten, and for the others, at least it's easier now to preserve them and make them available and for people who do have an interest to learn about them and get access to them. There's finally an essentially complete version of Metropolis after all these years, and it's trivial to get a copy of it. You used to have to be a film/sci-fi nerd to be aware of it in the first place, then track down a screening of it somewhere that had it incomplete with a bunch of gaps in it. Now someone mentions it online, you look it up on Wikipedia or wherever, and you can order or watch the restored version without getting out of your chair.
(Not that I really thought Metropolis was a whole lot of fun to watch either, but it's another one of those important ones that's worth it anyway. I'd still rather just watch The General again though. Heh.)
