I always laugh when people say that Citizen Kane is boring and that they can't sit through it.

Well here's something for you. I can sit through, and enjoy Citizen Kane, but not The Dark Knight Rises. I thought THAT Was boring.

I don't know if I could say that Citizen Kane was the best movie ever, but it did certainly have excellent casting, lightning and cinematography.

Dear god sir i hope you are joking..... or well, thats just very sad, sad indeed.
Yes, because personal opinions are always wrong if i don't like them. Why? BECAUSE OF REASONS!
Dude, chill, it is sad, it really is. Be less defensive.
You blatantly insulted someone for a differing opinion. One dick move deserves another.
Your definition of blatant insult is really extreme. Honestly it is really sad that you cant appreciate some of the greatest films of all time. On a side note, um, harden up son.

Me neither

I haven't watched many of the classics and movies that society says I need to see before I die.

Let's see...they're both in the 40's out of the Top 250 best of all time. Doesn't look like they're all that great to most people.

I think that people need to realize that an opinion can still be objectively wrong. So you're pointing out that it's sad that someone believes that The Dark Knight Rises is the best movie ever is sad is justifiable.

I had similar situation with someone who claimed that James Camerons Avatar was the best movie he had ever seen. To which I replied "You clearly have not seen enough movies", which was probably true. There are definitely better movies out there, it's just a matter of having an open enough mind to experience them.

I'm sorry but

http://www.imdb.com/chart/top

The best is clearly Shawshank Redemption. Did your vote include hundreds of thousands of people?

Although, to prove how useless your poll is. Citizen kane was the top film for 50 years and has finally been replaced by. . . a 50+ year old film. Is there a reason why this decision wasn't reached sooner.

Citizen Kane was great, but I never thought of it as the greatest movie of all times. I reserve that honor to Fiddler on the Roof. Actually here's my list of my other favorite movies. In no particular order:

a. Thin Red Line
b. Once upon a time in the west
c. Amadeus
d. Seven Samurai
e. Fight Club
f. Trainspotting
g. A Clockwork Orange
h. Apocalypse Now

And I have to put in here two more, just because every time I see these two on TV I simply can't stop watching, don't laugh now:
- Conan the Barbarian
- Rambo 1

You can stop laughing now...

What? No love for Forrest Gump? Its a wonderful life? Gone with the wind? Full Metal Jacket?

Perhaps none of these are the greatest film of all time, but Citizen Kane hasnt been for decades and Vertigo never was nor ever will be. Hell vertigo wasnt even Hitchcocks best film.

As long as it keeps people talking about Citizen Kane and Vertigo I'm happy. Both are amazing pieces of storytelling and should be remembered. Far too many people have neglected older films.
Citizen Kane is an amazing piece of film making which revolutionized this and set the precedent for that and yada yada yada, but unfortunately the story itself is kind of crappy compared to pretty much everything else about it. It's probably the single most important/significant ever, but as far as being watchable or enjoyable or able to be appreciated, especially for a modern audience (other than people with the background to appreciate it), it's a bit lacking.

There's not really much chance of the really well known ones being forgotten, and for the others, at least it's easier now to preserve them and make them available and for people who do have an interest to learn about them and get access to them. There's finally an essentially complete version of Metropolis after all these years, and it's trivial to get a copy of it. You used to have to be a film/sci-fi nerd to be aware of it in the first place, then track down a screening of it somewhere that had it incomplete with a bunch of gaps in it. Now someone mentions it online, you look it up on Wikipedia or wherever, and you can order or watch the restored version without getting out of your chair.

(Not that I really thought Metropolis was a whole lot of fun to watch either, but it's another one of those important ones that's worth it anyway. I'd still rather just watch The General again though. Heh.)

Seven Samurai is as close to perfect as I ever expect to see in a film. Incredibly well written, directed, acted, shot and its influence on the films puts it far and away beyond anything else I have seen.

There are movies I may like better, but whenever I'm asked what is the best movie I have ever seen I can't pick anything else.

You said it "was sad" that the guy's favorite movie was TDKR. That's... pretty "blatant" to me. Not to mention, "great" is completely subjective. If someone came up to me and said that The Room was their favorite, I wouldn't care. Finally, don't just tell me to "harden up," you were being a jerk, and I called you on it.

Lol, It is sad that you cant watch any film that is black and white, and yeah it is sad that you honestly believe that dark knight rising is the greatest film of all time. It doesn't make me a jerk to call out your sadly lacking film experience.
Your going to have to accept that as we grow older people will challenge our opinions on the internet, sometimes sarcastically sometimes dismissively but it doesn't make them all jerks,

That's a good choice, but personally I would go with Rashomon. The theme of multiple viewpoints is brilliantly executed, and it's just a really solid, memorable and remarkable film. No one movie can really be considered "the best" since they all offer something different, but if everyone in the world had to agree on one, I think Rashomon has a pretty good shot.

Eh, Citizen Kane is OK, for the time, it's pretty good.

But, in terms of classic Best ever movies, my vote has to go to Casablanca.
I really enjoyed that one.

I have not seen Citizen Kane, but I have been told that it is a fairly painful film to watch unless you are a fan of classic movies. It's a bit wierd that we can have a "best film", but I can understand a film deserving the title if it's a landmark in cinema and the progression of it. In the end, it pretty much comes down to the opinion of the viewer, as beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. If Citizen Kane or Vertigo were revolutionary as I am told, I don't really have a problem with them being considered such.

Vertigo is a movie that I should watch one of these days, I'm kind of interested in seeing some classic thrillers and seeing how the genre was back then.

Wait... do you think my favorite movie is TDKR? Because it's not. And instead of just asking the guy why TDKR is his favorite movie, you called him "sad." There are ways to disagree with people without being mean! Finally, you ARE being a jerk. Why? You're touting your opinions as complete and utter fact, you're being completely unironic about it to.
I must say that I agree with you. I've seen people before say "If you think X mainstream movie is the best film of all time, watch more movies" and it annoys me. It just reeks of elitism and never leads anywhere constructive...

But vertigo is a terrible movie! His whole plan hinges on her going along with his increasingly bizarre demands for her, which she only agrees to because she's... fallen in love with him?

No, I'm sorry. It's not as bad as The Birds, but Vertigo is just awful.

And didn't it used to be Casablanca, not Citizen Kane?
