I have not seen Citizen Kane, but I have been told that it is a fairly painful film to watch unless you are a fan of classic movies. It's a bit wierd that we can have a "best film", but I can understand a film deserving the title if it's a landmark in cinema and the progression of it. In the end, it pretty much comes down to the opinion of the viewer, as beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. If Citizen Kane or Vertigo were revolutionary as I am told, I don't really have a problem with them being considered such.

Vertigo is a movie that I should watch one of these days, I'm kind of interested in seeing some classic thrillers and seeing how the genre was back then.

Wait... do you think my favorite movie is TDKR? Because it's not. And instead of just asking the guy why TDKR is his favorite movie, you called him "sad." There are ways to disagree with people without being mean! Finally, you ARE being a jerk. Why? You're touting your opinions as complete and utter fact, you're being completely unironic about it to.
I must say that I agree with you. I've seen people before say "If you think X mainstream movie is the best film of all time, watch more movies" and it annoys me. It just reeks of elitism and never leads anywhere constructive...
Also on the mainstream point these old films WERE mainstream when they were released, time changes opinions more than someone being a jerk.

Wat?

I didn't even like it very much!

Seriously, I'd watch ANY OTHER Hitchcock movie before I watched Vertigo again. It was so OK it hurt.
I'm way more of a fan of North By Northwest

I'm sorry but

The best is clearly Shawshank Redemption. Did your vote include hundreds of thousands of people?

Although, to prove how useless your poll is. Citizen kane was the top film for 50 years and has finally been replaced by. . . a 50+ year old film. Is there a reason why this decision wasn't reached sooner.
Yeah well I didn't personally do the survey -_-. It is kind of weird that it took 50 years for them to change their minds to a 54 year old film. One could assume it's because they asked different people this time.

If you thought Fight Club and A Clockwork Orange was good, I'd say it could be a new favourite. As long as you don't mind subtitles.

Thank you critics, but i will pick my own 'best' movies.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

P.S. I'm glad that it wasn't batman, i have nothing against that movie, but that would be sad.

And I have to put in here two more, just because every time I see these two on TV I simply can't stop watching, don't laugh now:
- Conan the Barbarian
- Rambo 1

You can stop laughing now...
What is there to laugh about? Conan the Barbarian is a great dark fantasy movie with an epic score and visceral action scenes.

Rambo: First Blood is an even more complex animal; its a story that's actually really sad and moving. The series may have more action movie trappings in its sequels, but most of them still retain great heart. Rambo is an excellent movie and you should not feel any guilt in enjoying it.

Well, these votes don't mean much to the average joe. They certainly don't mean anything to me.

I love Citizen Kane as it's a beautiful and deeply meaningful film that does things only film can do.

I love the Dark Knight for the same exact reasons.

I love Ocarina of Time because it's a beautiful and deeply meaningful videogame that does things only a game can do.
Okay i'll bite.

In what way is Orc o' time deeply meaningful? It's a classic hero's journey that uses a mostly silent protagonist, who is for the most part, rather uncharacterized. To be frank, the only reason Link has yet to not be a silent protagonist is for nostalgia cred, even though being the silent protagonist doesn't actually make any sense in this case.
I sent you a PM with my analysis of the game. I don't feel comfortable indirectly promoting my work in this part of the forum.

I loved Vertigo as a kid, like when I was 5 or so. I even had a pet rock named 'Vertigo'.

It's been years since I last saw it, I should probably rewatch it.

BTW, my favourite movies, just to show how subjective it is:
Nightmare before Christmas
Jurassic Park 2
My neighbour Totoro
Lawrence of Arabia
Spider-Man 2

Although, to be fair, movies aren't really my favourite form of media. I prefer books and comics, and when it comes to animation/live action I prefer tv-series over movies as a format because they can take their time.

The only Hitchcock film I've ever seen is Rear Window, and that was kickass. Maybe I'll have to watch Vertigo sometime.

Favorite movie is still Die Hard. Shut up. Don't look at me like that.

Captcha: Big Screen. Anyone else getting a little creeped out that captcha knows what we talk about?

Great use of friends to display your opinion, you win one internet cookie.
Wow...just when I thought Friends couldn't get more annoying, I watched this video...

Anyway, I admit, I'm not the Biggest Citizen Kane fan in the world, but as a film buff I was more than aware of it.

I don't mind seeing a Hitchcock piece as the greatest film, though to be perfectly honest Vertigo is hardly even my favorite Hitchcock piece.

Wait a second....the BRITISH Film Institute? I don't give a fuck, I'm an AMURICAN! And the AFI still considers Citizen Kane to be the bestest movie EVER!!!
YEAH, AMERICA!!!!

....

I actually don't care at all. These "best of" lists all these film groups make do nothing but make people yell at each other, which I guess is still fun in its own way. But it's art, everyone has their own opinion. I love both Vertigo and Citizen Kane, but if I could make a Top 100 list I'd put Spirited Away at the top because Miyazaki is my idol.

Opinions are FUN!
Spirited Away? I'd think Grave of the Fireflies or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind would be better choices for best Miyazaki Film.

Vertigo screwed up in the storytelling department by revealing the truth of the girl he'd been chasing too early, and the answer was implausible, then it had a ridiculous, frankly laughable ending. Harvey's a better J Stewart movie and I'd take ANY Hitchcock movie over Vertigo. Even THE BIRDS.

Citizen Kane is not the best movie ever for several reasons. It's boring, for one. Its message and riffs are not very relevant to modern times. And, by 1941, all of the supposed 'firsts' it achieved were already being done in foreign cinema.

A lot of people in here have it right. 2001: A Space Oddyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Psycho, there are so many better choices.

Star Wars V, Alien, T2, The Matrix, Jurassic Park, The Crow, The Dark Knight, even Avatar gave us great reasons to go to the theaters, (even if the storyline had issues, it won't matter much for people who put visuals and music ie: the 'experience' ahead of the story).

Then there's all those respectable war movies like Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now. The amazing storytelling from Pixar ... 'til recently.

My favorite movie? The Last of the Mohicans. Subjective!

First of all, I regard anyone who tries to tell me what the best of something subjective is, as being pretentious at best, and insulting at worst.
Ignoring that, however, I still don't agree with them. Personally, I think that Citizen Kane is a way better movie than Vertigo.

I would have to say Fight Club, even though you can't really watch it twice
Why is that?

Fight Club is one of the few movies I can think of that I can discover something new in, every time I watch it. There's an amazing amount of detail in that movie, and for that, I'd say it warrants quite a few viewings.

I think Citizen Kane became thee movie you state to show how awesome you are with movies. Especially when know one watches it. I would put many movies first over this, Evil Dead 2, Aliens and Lord of the Rings....these are movies I watch all the time. Some movies are just great of their time....not in history.

One second, you're an AMURICAN. That makes Pearl Harbour your favourite movie and your idol is Michael Bay .... lol, can't even keep a straight face whilst writing this.
