Classics you can't get into

I recently got myself the PSN copy of Suikoden, and was rather excited after hearing good things. I then found the game was clearly a first attempt and struggled because of it... I mean, it was a first attempt, but it wasn't exactly structured well. I get the age it came from. JRPG's were still trying to hit the mark in some ways. But even then, I found the game to be poor in dialogue, story was a little lackluster, it was rough in execution (inventory management was absolute garbage and very frustrating at times) and there was very little punch to combat, or things I did. Of course, it has some good ideas. The 6 person battles with the more dynamic camera was nice. The duels were cool. I also love having more than 1 person attack at a time. It felt kinda nice in some ways. But then I gave up 7 hours in.

I'm now moving on to Suikoden 2 with more hopes, due to the improvements it's supposed to have made. Looking up some gameplay helped. So, I ask you all this... What are some classic games that are praised heavily by many, but you can't find yourself able to get into or enjoy for long?

Classics I cannot get into? That would be any and all of them. Xevious: check. Commando: check. Parasite Eve, Soviet Strike, Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Gex, Vanguard, Ikari Warriors...basically anything older than the PS2 era I regret purchasing, except for Metal Gear Solid. Thankfully, none of those games cost me more than $5 each.

Seems I can't get rid of my nostalgia glasses. Every damn time an old game seems like a good idea, followed immediately by omigodthatwasgarbagewhydoIkeepbuyingthese.

And yet I think I would still like to have a working version (any) of the classic arcade game Time Pilot.

I will never learn.

*EDIT* Oh no wait, I do thoroughly love my imported copy of Vib Ribbon though.

Any Zelda, really. I got to the Water Temple on Ocarina of Time and then stopped because I was bored.

Also Final Fantasy 7. Hate to be one of those people who just focuses on graphics, but I can't get over the folded-crate-paper characters, though I'll be forced to play the remake, when that eventually comes out.

Oh and Metal Gear. I have no idea what anyone sees in any Metal Gear game.

You and I share the same issue with FF7. Then again, I never could do most FF games. I tried 9. Just stopped having fun by disc 3. Also, Metal Gear is sort of its own thing... If you're not into it, that's how it is. I tend to enjoy it for the gameplay, music, and David Hayter. The story, while cool at timers, is a mess. I tend to just enjoy the games themselves otherwise

Chrono Tigger.

While I can fully understand why it was heavily praised due to its time mechanic which leads to many variable actions you can takes which will have an aftermath/ consequences and multiples endings. It kinda like Kotor or Mass Effect at that time when it come to making desicions.

I don't know why but I just wasn't fully engaged by it. Maybe the gameplay and graphic kinda put me off. I just stop playing when the game presented me on several sidestories to do or just face up Lavos (this is the DS version so it include all the other stuff after the first released).

I wouldn't say there's any classics I can't get into, I just never feel like trying all that hard. :p

Totally agree with you about Zelda. I have friends who go ape shit over every new Zelda title. I just don't get it.

Planescape Torment. Once in a while I look through my game discs and the Nameless One on the cover gives a judging look for not experiencing one of the richest story-based RPG experiences ever conceived (according to every hardcore CRPG fan ever except me).
I really want to get into it some day, but the huge walls of text eventually wear me out and I never get too far.

Age of a game rarely puts me off . The so called classics I cant get into are just games I dont like regardless of what time they came out or when I first played them for example I never liked Pac Man and I can never really get into Tetris I can play em alright I just dont enjoy it or find them fun even when they were newish.

Been trying to play the classic X-Com and yeah, I just can't. They really throw you in the deep end with no explanation of any of it's mechanics at all (fortunately the Steam version comes with a digital manual). I don't mind retro graphics and stuff, but the interface really leaves something to be desired, and RNG seems to just hate me even more than the modern remake.

I'm struggling to get into Okami, at the moment. It probably doesn't help that I don't really have the right TV for the graphics, but even otherwise, having trouble getting into it.

Also, I haven't been able to play a Civilization game (either 4 or 5, at least) for more than a couple of hours without having my fill of it for a month. I think that's less an indictment of the games and more how my tastes have fallen off of long-spanning strategy games, though.

Half Life, just never got into them all that much. Tried a few times but just could never be bothered sticking with it.
Lord, I just found Half Life so boring and... lifeless. Everything is brown and gray, there's barely any plot, the controls felt stiff and unresponsive, the characters were dull and lifeless, and the whole title felt like I was shooting my way down a narrow corridor. Then there were those awful puzzles. I don't see what seperates it from Halo and COD, honestly. At least Halo wasn't allergic to color.

Same here. The first person platforming stuff really put me off.

Then I noticed the convoluted reasons the level designers used to get Freeman through the levels (go to the third floor of this tower to press THIS button...then go to the first floor to pull THIS lever, etc...). After that, little minor things just started bugging me.

Never really got into any of the Final Fantasy or Zelda games. There was no real reason. They just didn't appeal to me.

Assassin's Creed games: The moment I found out that none of this is really happening, you're just living out "genetic memories" or whatever, I lost all interest. What's the motivation if I already know this is all just a big dream and I can't die? Beyond that, I was just never impressed with the stealth gameplay in them.

Metal Gear: They just seem so damn convoluted and it takes an encyclopedia to understand what's going on with the plot.

Bayonetta: I just couldn't get over how friggin bizarre she looks, like a sexy librarian fell into a vat of FEV.

Final Fantasy: Strangely, I loved FF7, one of the my favorite games of all time, but every FF I've tried since then I couldn't get into.

Heroes of Might and Magic games: Turn-based strategy is one of those hilarious genres that I really want to like, but I'm just so terrible at them, and HOMM is no exception. Even on easy settings, by level 2 or 3 of the campaign mode it seemed like I was doing battle with armies three times my size, commanded by heroes twice my rank. And even if I pulled out a miracle victory and beat them, it seems like 5 minutes later they'd have another Army just as powerful waiting.

I picked up System Shock 2 on steam for cheap a while back. The archaic controls just bug me to the point I can't make it through the tutorial. I've heard nothing but praise for the atmosphere and story of this classic, but the controls and interface just make it a slog to get through that I can't force myself to do.

What's with the finger quotes around classic in the title? Makes it sound more snarky than it needs to, especially when most of the games being mentioned in the topic are legit classics. Don't see many people talking about Devastation or Pariah anymore after all. The fact that a game can still be remembered fondly 10+ years after its release is a pretty good indication it did something very right even if not everyone might see it.

Me? Never really been a fan of the Metal Gear series myself. Not very fond of the games sense of style even if I am a big fan of the stealth genre.

System Shock 2 is a wonderful game that will make you feel like you're terrible at video games. I love it, but it's got a mean streak, and the controls are a major part of that.

For me, the original XCOM. I don't think I've ever managed to get past the first couple months. Not because I hit a game over state, but because I really don't enjoy the way the game plays.

Baldur's Gate. I tried, I really tried, but AD&D is such an archaic mess. On top of that, the Infinity Engine was always kinda derpy. I keep leaving the Beamdog updated editions on my Steam Wishlist because one day, no really... The same thing is true of Icewind Dale and BG2.

Quake 2... this is a game that I should really get into and love... I just, can't.
