Hello Escapist!
Ok, some background:
I've been a wrestling fan since age 14 (it passed over my head when I was a younger kid).
I'm pretty into it, and watch wrestling more than anything else video related (Other things I watch: Cartoons, Anime, Daily Show/Colbert Report).
I'm fairly familiar with wrestling from all over the world, and from most eras throughout history, so I guess I qualify as an Otaku.
So, Escapist, given the sheer number of misunderstandings and stereotypes about Wrestling and it's Fans as a whole, I am now available to answer any and all questions.
Ask me anything:
What I think of things right now/How does THAT work?/Was "The Wrestler" accurate?/What do you or other non-casual fans think about "insert wrestler"
Ask ahoy!

Do you like John Cena?

That is the important question.
Wrestling fans are fairly divided about John.
On one hand:
He works hard, he loves "the business", and (based on early years) we know that he can wrestle when he wants to.
On the other hand:
He's popular, and therefore sucks.
Truth is, Cena tries his best with the material he's given.
If he were given some more challenging angles or "story lines" to work with, he'd really shine.
Either way, he's good business, and a good guy IRL to boot.
He's also a fan of Fist of the North Star.

I wanted your personal opinion. :p

I watch wrestling on a semi-consistent basis, so I don't really require any real answers. I just wanted to know what you thought of him. =D

I actually like the guy.
However, even John himself has acknowledged that some more Attitude Era style angles might work better for him.
He's just too like-able to hate

HA HA HA HA!
Well, never on purpose!
Every now and again my life will get hectic to the point where I start to miss hair cuts, which sucks because my hair grows very fast!
However, in my experience, I've never met a wrestling fan with a mullet before.
Part of me kinda of wants to, now!

Really? What about flannies? have many of those? how do you feel about beer and guns together? and do you own a Ute(they're called trucks in America aren't they?)

Oh and did you cry when the dude with the face paint and weird sleeves left? Hardy or something? I saw a bit of that and there where lots of people crying in the audience, I had a good laugh.

Well, let's answer these one by one!
1: I have no idea what a flannie is, sadly.
2: Separately, when used responsibly and with caution, they aren't a problem.
When used together, nothing good can possibly happen.
3: Yes, yes I do. I inherited it from my father, and mainly use it to take large bags of garbage and recyclables to the waste management center every month or so.
4: A lot of Hardy's fans are young girls with poor taste in idols, most of whom were under the impression that he was retiring (he wasn't). You know how young girls can be, right? It explains why Twilight is so popular. So no, most of us didn't cry then.

Oh OK, so not not all wrestling fans are rednecks? myth busted.

On a more I guess serious note, whats the appeal of watch to big muscle men, dance around in a choreographed "fight"? I never got it. I don't see any point when its all staged, every single move is scripted and the acting and for lack of a better word "story" are generally pretty bad.

Professional Westling died when the WWE bought out ECW and WCW.

I genuinely enjoyed ECW until it finished, and WWF right up to around 1999. Then lack of competition in the industry killed exciting new ideas and more importantly the WWE has decided that physique > acting ability.

The attitude era was a direct response to the rise of ECW and was excellent, great actors and exciting talented wrestlers on both brands.

With the end of ECW the need to evolve stopped and now we just have body builders with no acting ability with tired old rehashed storylines.

Kinda off topic but...hey :)

I will take advantage of this "anything"?

Do you smoke heavily, like, enough to make your voice really raspy like the announcers on the commercials?

I'm sorry about this, I don't want to offend anyone, but Wrestling sorta makes me laugh OO. So does all burly men actually, and even more so in strange clothes =p. The guy with the hair is awesome tho... Hair-guy for ever!

The WWE was called WWF (World Wrestling Federation) until the world wildlife fund decided that people were confusing a animal charity with a wrestling company and took them to court to get their name changed. This was around 2000 and coincided with the end of the popularity wrestling had enjoyed from the early 90's

That's exactly it. I think they legally had to change their name because of the World Wildlife Fund.

WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) used to go by WWF (World Wrestling Federation) until it was rebranded in '02

Thanks for clearing that up, guys. Did you organise that?
