Oh, Cartoon Network. I remember being six years old, excitedly turning our satellite big screen tv to the channel (which I still remember, G14) and watching the best cartoons of the 90's. All the classic Cartoon Cartoons. In the beginning, there were three; Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, and Dexter's Laboratory. Then came I Am Weasel, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Mike Lu and Og, Sheep In The Big City...
I remember welcoming new ones even if they weren't quite as good as the older series, even occasionally going over to rival Nick to see shows like Kablam! and Hey! Arnold. I hated Nickelodeon for constantly rerunning their programs in a neverending time loop and not allowing any series to have a final episode (like Angry Beavers wanted to) but at least they still had some good cartoons here and there. They pushed Spongebob and strangled every last dollar they could out of it, but even that series stopped trying a few seasons in.
But the good ol CN is where it was at. It almost never let you down when you needed a cartoon fix. Even the commercials were good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRRl5XQXfTI
Remember that advert for Batman on CN where you first see flashes of a grinning Joker in the darkness? That sure as hell made me want to watch me some Batman, that's for sure. I remember when CN had this giveaway one year, where you would call in a number and try to win a prize each day. I tried in vain for hours for weeks trying to win something, I even got through once on the phone but nobody picked up.
I remember the very first non-cartoon i'd ever seen shown; Dumb & Dumber. Ugh. What a terrible decision, and a brooding omen of things to come. I am lucky enough to have Boomerrang and get to enjoy my favorite shows again, even if I have to put up with Pokeymon being on there too. Sadly, it's just not the same. It's heartbreaking to watch CN anymore.
One of my favorite things to do as a kid was go into a Hollywood Video and rent old VHS of cartoons, and seeing classing characters painted on the wall near the ceiling alongside rolls of film tape. I always thought that the classics would always be there on CN, and never thought the CN could have sunk so low.
So what happened? Well i'm sure the flood of anime didn't help. Why pay people to make a new original series when you can just take any japanese cartoon, edit it to horseshit, slap on horrid voice acting, and fill your network with it? Also, even the best cartoons faultered as they went on. Johnny got dumber and less funny, the animation for Suzy was a terrible change. (Along with the Penguin from Batman, anyone agree?)
The Eds? Don't get me started. Ed went from being funny and ready with a non sequitor to other characters barely acknowledging him because he's always screaming nonsense at everyone. The creator has this strange phobia of ever showing another character, so when they finally went back to school, they were in this strange dimension where they are the only people in the whole building. The Eds themselves can't seem to go five seconds without crashing into something or each other, and when I finally saw the movie when it aired on CN, it reenforced everything I hated about the show and then some. It was a sad letdown to such a promising series.
Ugh. Forgive me for pouring my heart out here, but the Cartoon Network we grew to love is officially dead. I'm going to watch the rest of this Dexter's Lab episode and remember the good old times. (And even now, it still makes me laugh. Dee Dee is holding a stuffed Monkey doll and says "What's that Monkey? Yes, I too see into the future.." (stares off into space while shapes and spirals swirl overhead).
