As others have said, it's not really our place to decide whether Japan should ban something. It seems perfectly fair to ban it in your own country so I don't see a really big issue. But to be honest, I don't think the article really has a 'culturally imperialist' tone, it just seems to be saying that we don't this kind of stuff getting out onto the internet. If banning it before it's finished is the only way to make this happen, so be it.

Those games are known as "hentai games." Almost all feature girlish-looking characters. Some of the games are violent -- depicting rape, torture and bondage in detail.
The bit in bold sounds like a description of all Japanese video game characters.

Way to stay on top of things, CNN.

America has a far higher number of reported rapes (per capita) than Japan - something like 18x last I checked. Those in glass houses shouldn't criticise other cultures raep games. Focus on solving the actual rapes, then go after the fictional ones.
This. Raping fictional character is definately better than raping RL people.

This reminds me of another Japanese visual novel game that included a jab to the international brew-ha-ha sorrounding RapeLay. It featured a few girls discussing the issue of fictional characters having basic human rights, and then went on to encourage all the fictional characters of the world to unite and demand their right to vote in elections. I thought that was pretty funny.

I think what I'm trying to say is; people are taking shit that don't concern them at all way too seriously.

It took them how long again?
Edit: I mean really, this game was out so many years ago, it's a crappy game that not even worth the game case it was included with.

CNN needs some new stories.

I agree with Sten, talk about reviving a dead game to cause an issue. Are these FOX news and CNN types always this... Moronic? I don't get their news shows over here so I don't know.

They ended it with this quote:

"The idea of banning it, or telling people what they can and can't do just because on the off chance some kid might get involved with it is just ridiculous," said Gardner.

So overall I approve of the article and though it is rather late and takes a long time and a lot of hand wringing before it ever gets to the issue of freedom of expression, it at least ends on a fair point.

Hmmm.

Japan has Hentai Games! ZOMG! A FACT OLDER THEN THE INVENTION OF THE WHEEL!

In all seriousness, this is blown up way out of proportion. I don't care what the Japanse Hentai Companies are making. If they make porn games, fine. Let the depraved, sex-crazed people who get off on that get off on that. It's not my problem.

Leave it be, America. It's Japan's problem, not ours. (That goes for all the other countries not-Japan!)

1. This is Japan. What exactly were you expecting?
2. It's virtual so you don't have to do it in real life. Thus stopping actual rapists by getting them addicted to computer games.
3. Free speech, I guess. If the KKK can have rallies, Japan should be able to make rape games.

Should Japan ban RapeLay because a bunch of stupid gaijin threw a ***** fit? No.

Should Americans collectively shut our fucking mouths and realize that the rest of the world views us the way the other kids on the playground view the asshole rich kid, as nothing but a source of cool toys to play with and otherwise not worthy of friendship?

HELL FUCKING YES.

1. Ahh... CNN, the motor wheelchairs just aint as fast as they used to be.
2. Let Japan have what Japan wants. If we bring it here, maybe the problem is on our end.
3. Virtual Rape in Japan > Virtual Rape in U.S. per capita. Actual Rape in Japan < Actual Rape in U.S. per capita. Which is the bigger problem?
4. If you don't want it in your backyard, don't put it there.

Simulated [sub][insert negative activity here][/sub] will always be better than actual [sub][insert negative activity here][/sub], what we (the US) haven't discovered is that simulated activities do not encourage their real life counterparts and have yet to utilize technology (like video games and simulated reality) and thinking outside the box mentality to assist with the study and rehabilitation of people deranged enough to commit the actual acts. Imagine how much rehabilitation-assisting data we could gather if we could take incarcerated or previous offenders and monitor brain activity and psychological processes as they voluntarily simulated the horrific acts they were inclined to do?

Short sighted moralistic bunch us humans are.

Well, I was going to say something about how it's not much different than the countless waves of locusts I've mowed down in Gears of War but you spoke the truth, sir.
