I generally prefer the AK for it's stopping power, but I do prefer the sights on the M16.

I had run out of ammo for the default assault class, so I stole a AK and went around shooting everyone.

Then, before i noticed that there was one sniper that kept on going on the car with all the missles on it to snipe (it was the Countdown map). So, i took the AK with the Red Dot Sight, aimed and fired LITERALY ACCROSS THE FREAKIN MAP! He was barely 2x3 pixles on my screep mind you.

No way in hell could an AK, let alone a regular assault rifle, shoot accross the map about (i'm guessing) 1000 meters away
I think your estimate is way out, because I don't think CoD4 has any maps with those kind of ranges. 600m at most and definitely not in Countdown.

And for the last time, would you fools stop calling any medium/medium-long range shooting with any weapon 'sniping'? A military sniper is a well-trained specialist and an expert in camouflage who can engage targets at far longer ranges than you find in the puny maps in COD4. If you kill a target 500m away with a Desert Eagle, you're a nut with a handgun who got lucky, not a sniper.

I like how once any thread about weapons pops up, people try to prove how they know so much about the military and guns, yes i get it, you watch the history channel, bravo, so does everybody else. Although between the options you gave us OP, i prefer the AK, but i really like my G3 in hardcore

G-36C w/ a Silencer or the M-4 w/ a Silencer.

However, the P-90 w/ Bandoleer & Double Tap works wonders in close in situations where they are all bunched up.

As to the real life comparisons. The reasons for the AK-47's (not talking any newer models here as they are slightly improved) notorious lack of accuracy is in the manufacturing. The reason the weapon is so durable is that the tolerances used in fitting the parts together are actually very loose. While this does improve the durability & resistance to the elements it also causes parts of the gun to flex quite a bit when firing. Ever get a chance check out some frame-by-frame pictures of a AK firing using high speed cameras. The upper reciever actually bucks quite a bit away from the lower reciever which does nothing to improve accuracy.

In the hands of an average soldier an AK has an effective (meaning accurate) range of 200m-300m. An M-16 in the hands of a semi competent shooter has an accurate range of around 400m-600m. (This is just the stuff I remember from Marine Infantry Training & other stuff that has come up on the History & Military Channels). Unfortunatly most firefights occur at -200m thus kinda negating the 16's advantage.....

9/10ths of all infantry warfare is conducted at 100-300 yards. Infanrty are only of use in such a situation, because in the open they are, in essence, mincemeat for any Tom (tank officer) Dick (maraudering gunship pilot) and Harry (psychotic artilleryman resembling Richard Nixon) with spare time on their hands. And please don't point out Stingers and LAWs, because these weapons are still not enough to even the advantage.

Also- shooting at over 600 yards, your lucky to hit even if you're a trained sniper. No military engagement of significance (outside of tank battles, and the average infantryman is useless in these) was fought outside of the <300 yard range.

The Fabrique Nationale Fusil Automatique Leger.

Uses the 7.62X51 round, which is bigger than the AK's cartridge, has a nice accuracy single fire, but burst tends to spray, which is fine since the only use of automatic fire is suppression.

I wish they had FN-FAL's in COD4. Nice weapon, was very popular during it's day even if large and bulky. 20 round Magazine is also a turn off but hard to argue with 7.62mm NATO rounds, one of my fav's in Rainbow Six 3 PC version...

My favourite gun, though, is the M14.
Too bad you can't get the cool scope you get with the Marine for the M4. Though, if I played multiplayer, I'd be using the M4. I prefer accuracy ofer stopping power. Which is why I'd be a sniper...

Hmm.. It depends on the map and my mood. I like to switch off between the M4 and the M16A4. One for long long range sniping, and one for run and gun.

I like the M16 in COD4. It is more satisfying to get the kill by clicking once then holding the mouse down. I haven't quite mastered short burst AK yet. Two of my custom slots are dedicated to the M16. Red dot and Silenced depending on how sneaky I am feeling at the time.

For real life I would prefer the AK since my shooting skill is closer to that of a Russian worker than a US Marine.

I like the G36C actually... probably should have made this a poll though...
G36 is awsome, but the best weapon is the P-90. Sweet as.
Also MP5 (yes, MP5) is preaty good.

I am an M16 fan (red dot and digital camo because I can). I have popped sniper across the map and prefer three round burst fire rather than the spray and pray tactic. When you mix that with stopping power and deep impact with extra ammo I have a good ranged killing machine. The Ak-47 is by no means a bad gun in any way it is just not my type of gun. The recoil on the AK is a bit more fierce than the M16 in my experience so I don't have as fine of aim (which is not a problem with the M16 because every other kill is a headshot for me with that particular rifle). So I am a major advocate for the M16 but I say just use what works best for you.

1) We aren't talking about real-life guns here, so the point is moot.

2) Every single machine gun in the game is exactly the same. Different sights, whoop de doo. So this point is also moot.

I vote Dragunov sniper rifle. Just because.

Really? Most of the guns in the game handle differently even if only slightly. As to the reason were talking about real guns is because I made an uninformed comment on the G36C compatibility with grenade launchers. That or someone else made another comment that started this.

AK47, the very best there is, mine is gold plated, naked, and always equipped with stopping power and deep impact.

I play competitively so i pretty much limit myself to perks and attachments only allowed in league play for CAL, TGL, and TWL.

TWL is the most lenient so i usually limit myself to CAL allowed perks and gadgets.

That being said, it does not matter what gun I use, I'll assfuck you sideways with a Beretta if that's all I've got. My usuals are the MP5, AK74U (they modeled it completely fucking wrong), the AK47, M16A4, and M4. Always depends on the map and my opponents.

the P90 is weaksauce, if you use it you should uninstall the game and go play in traffic. That gun is fucking lazy.

HAH! I love games where you can silence an AK. S'rubbish, the firing chamber clangs so much it wouldn't do you any good.
maybe your shitty WASR-10 rattles like that, but an AK with a milled reciever doesnt make that kind of noise, also: Pic related

The AK-47 is used by many around the world and was in 900 wars! It damage and fire rate might of benn exagerated though.

the AK47 has a cyclic rate of 600 rounds per minute, the 7.62x39mm M43 round is a vicious bastard within 200 meters and WILL knock you on your ass. Hollow point M43 will produce an exit wound the size of a grapefruit.

I've never seen a game do any gun true justice, especially not the AK or the AR-15.
