I just read another thread about annoying popup ads on the excapist(I have not had any myself, must be google chrome blocking them) and people got put on probation for suggesting using an ad blocker or just saying that their built-in firefox blocker was working.

thats not okay in my book.

It's in the rules.
I'm sure there are plenty of other forums out there that don't have such rules.

I'm not actually sure where the rules are, so if someone could link this poor soul to them before he does something he shouldn't, I'd be grateful.

Thats cool. Its pretty ok in the rest of ours. Its extremely ok in the book of each and every person who works on and runs this site.

So... I don't know, get over it? I mean, if you really don't like it that much, then you're not going to enjoy your stay here.

EDIT: Here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/codeofconduct] are the rules for you. It is explicitly stated in them.

Da Rules said:
Have Respect for the Site and its Content
We put a lot of work into the content on the site, and if you've just shown up to trample on that hard work, we will remove your comments and ask you to leave. Constructive criticism is welcomed; negativity for its own sake is not. Further, discussions instructing or otherwise advocating the circumvention of The Escapist's advertisements, security mechanisms, media protections or similar facilities will not be tolerated.

Define, "pop-ups".

I've had none. Though, that may be Chrome working it's magic, but it doesn't display anything that would indicate a pop-up has been signaled to, well... pop-up. :/

The reason they get probed is because they are telling people to use programs to circumvent the ads, which are the main revenue for The Escapist. Of which, the only way to disable ads is to get a Publisher's Club Membership, offering fine benefits to subscribers including nuking all ads, custom title, special member only forums and A GOLD BADGE STATING YOU ARE A MEMBER CREDIT TO TEAM!

So what are you waiting for? BE CREDIT TO TEAM. :D

...

Seriously, we need cash. :/

There's the thing though - it clearly states constructive criticism is welcomed. Not 'tolerated' or 'ignored', it is actively welcomed in a positive light in the letter of those laws.

With that in mind, constructively criticising the use of ads is NOT a legitimate, certifiable reason for punishing people.

I said this in another topic, and I will say it here:

Get Publishers Club!!

Believe me it is worth it, then you wouldn't have to complain, or get put on probation! :)

Those ads are basically their one source of revenue. By saying to use an adblocker, you basically saying to use something that blocks the site from getting profits. No profits means no content. No content means no visitors. No visitors means no website.

We got probation for ADVOCATING the use of Ad Blockers on this site, not for using them (Though this seems to be wrong too) or questioning the Escapist content.

At least, that's what my probation said.

I can understand why: the Escapist has to make money somehow. I do have to question why they use mid page pop ups, but hell, who am I to judge?

Then using Google Chrome would also be a violation of their rules, since it automaticly blocks those types of ads

The people weren't banned for criticizing the use of ads. They were banned for offering a way around said ads which generate revenue for the site.

Wrong, Chrome still allows many ads through. I am currently looking at three different (though very much the same) ads for Rift.

No ads = no Yatzee = no escapist

they need the ads to pay for the talent, if you turn off adds and/or encourage others to do so they they cant make any money, at the end of the day the escapist is a business.

(DON'T BAN ME, Just pointing something out. D:)

While Chrome does have such a blocker, while browsing The Escapist, it has never actually had that little stupid icon showing it has blocked a pop-up.

It just seems Chrome... is, well, just doesn't have them. :/ Something in the way it handles the script maybe. :/

Because of that, I'm thinking of browsing The Escapist in Opera. :/ I feel a little guilty. ;~;

Chrome SHOULD be blocking the mid page ads.

If it isn't... interesting...

I'm looking at the top banner, side panels, and a square at the bottom of the page. All Rift ads.

I don't really know what a mid-page ad is, so... I assume that Chrome is working correctly in that regard.

Also, as far as I recall they way the escapist profits from ads is if people click on them(though I could be wrong) and not simply for showing them.

Also I completly disagree with using popup or midpage ads or ads with sound. everything else is okay with me

Pop-ups?
The closest thing on the 'Scapist are those banner ads at the top that become bigger when you mouse over them. If you're getting Sketchy Mc200th-visitor ads, then you're getting them from another browser page.

Mid page ads are advertisements that pop up smack dab in the center of the screen. There are frequently interact, often hide their close out buttons, and float along with your browsing.

Basically, it forces you to deal with the ad, as it makes the web page unusable and is usually difficult to kill.
