They banned the 'first comment' people and I didn't care.
They banned the 'constructive criticism' people and I still didn't care.
They haven't put me on probation or banned me yet, and I wouldn't care if they did.

If people want to avoid the ads then they can work it out for themselves, just like I would have done if I could be arsed. I remember the bad old days when they used to make you watch ads before the videos so I'm not complaining.

Now I'm just curious, how exactly does the escapist profit from these ads? Is it just a flat "We'll give you $X to show these for a week"? or is it a per click thing? If it's the first then it shouldn't really matter, big E gets their money no matter what we do. If it's the later, then who the hell willingly clicks on those things?

Only ads i have disagreements with are those before videos, the ones you cant adjust the volume for without a system mute.
Everything else is ok, those side of the page adds dont show too often, only when the 'scapes has some kind of event.

Mid page ads are advertisements that pop up smack dab in the center of the screen. There are frequently interact, often hide their close out buttons, and float along with your browsing.

Basically, it forces you to deal with the ad, as it makes the web page unusable and is usually difficult to kill.
Hmm... See, I don't get those here. However, I have gotten those on Yahoo! every once in a while. I've been using Chrome since the first beta release.

I believe the video ads are per watch, the screen 'backgrounds' are monthly, the mini ads at the bottom and top of pages are per click, and the pop ups are per showing.

Thats just a guess though. You'd have to ask they're advertisement department.

Eh? Does this thread have a point cuz it looks like another pointless rage thread to me...

And that's not ok in my book

That sounds about right

Also, as far as I recall they way the escapist profits from ads is if people click on them(though I could be wrong) and not simply for showing them.

Nope, The Escapist gets paid per ad view. Nothing in regards to revenue comes through clicks. Or the specific way it works is this (as far as I know):

[ul][li]A company gives Themis Media (The company the own and run The Escapist) so much money for so many ad views.[/li]
[li]Themis Media agrees and starts hosting their advertisements on the servers.[/li]
[li]After the views agreed upon are reached, the ads are deleted from the servers.[/li][/ul]

This is why admitting to or suggesting that other users use adblock is frowned upon, as it means the company don't get paid for the bandwidth people are using to view the site's content.

Also, people may not be viewing them depending on where you live. Different countries go through different servers and thus get different ads, this applies for both banner ads and other forms of advertising like these ones people are talking about and video ads.

I don't have any ads but then I'm a publisher's club member. The site has to make money somehow so they can deliver all the great content that they offer. If you're not willing to pay the Escapist for all this then no problem, it's free to everyone! How can you complain about minor inconviences for free content?

Then using Google Chrome would also be a violation of their rules, since it automaticly blocks those types of ads
(DON'T BAN ME, Just pointing something out. D:)

While Chrome does have such a blocker, while browsing The Escapist, it has never actually had that little stupid icon showing it has blocked a pop-up.

It just seems Chrome... is, well, just doesn't have them. :/ Something in the way it handles the script maybe. :/

Because of that, I'm thinking of browsing The Escapist in Opera. :/ I feel a little guilty. ;~;
I use chrome, and I still get the ads :S. oth pop up and non

I dont mind the ads, some of them actually interst me. But for some CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISM (as indicated by the rules :p) the pop up ads do stop the video Im watching from working (stops buffering/wont start again) if the pop up turns up atfer I clicked play (Until I refresh)

Just one little niggle, otherwise they be fine

Truly enlightening.

I always wondered how this works.

It´s been said already, but i´ll add my voice to it: It´s in the rules. When you post here, you must follow them.

Started that way, but developed, did you read the thread or did you just post?

Also, thanks for the clarification Zombie_Fish.
I still think some types of ads shouldn't be used. If you annoy your audience, they will leave.

I find it amusing that so many people can't seem to grasp the concept of just ignoring the adds and feel the need to create forum posts to ***** about them.

Wait wait wait wait. The comments that people shouldn't comment on the kinds of ads on the site are infuriating. I haven't read anyone saying there shouldn't be any ads and everything should be given to them free with candy, just that some ads are intrusive to the point of making the site, if not unuseable, at least quite annoying. No one's saying the site shouldn't have ads and make money. They're saying that maybe the kind of ads could be more carefully chosen. Sure the rules say don't advocate using a pop-up blocker, fine. Don't do that. But are you really advocating everyone shuts up and takes it? I know I'm taking this analogy too far but damnit - at what point is it ok for someone to voice a dissenting opinion? If the site showed ads for tobacco - is it ok to say that's not cool? Or what about even more offensive though not illegal products? We're not sheep here. We're not all "thank you sir can I have another?" Go ahead and run ads and pay for the site and not only make a living but make a comfortable living - no one's against that! Just please, don't run ads that covers up the content. Sheesh people - a little solidarity anyone?

I'll assume that what I'm doing is OK, but it's got me thinking. I have an ad blocker for my browser, and it's always on, but I'm a member of the Publisher's Club, which would mean I wouldn't get ads even without the blocker. Is that fine, or against the rules?

OT: Don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said. The rules are the rules. :\

I just read another thread about annoying popup ads on the excapist(I have not had any myself, must be google chrome blocking them) and people got put on probation for suggesting using an ad blocker or just saying that their built-in firefox blocker was working.

thats not okay in my book.
Well, I don't get the popups and I too have joined the 21st century in using Chrome (as should everyone), so it's not really an issue for me. Aren't there several members on here who actually work for the Escapist and/or help run and moderate the forums? Why don't you contact some of them with private messages? At the very least you'd get a discussion going with some people that Escapist trusts. Strength in numbers, power in networking.

Your welcome.

If you want to discuss ads that are being used then you're kind of talking to the wrong person. I just look after the forums, I don't even live in the same continent as the company who run The Escapist, yet alone have a decision in their marketing.

If The Escapist is still making money at the end of the day then that's fine. The whole point of this being against the rules is that promoting or admitting to using adblock can cause the site to lose money.
