I think that having a certain post count (350, maybe 400) before being able to post a topic would be the best option for preventing this. It assures that people who haven't been here very long don't, in fact, clog up the forums with old topics, as well as making sure they have a basic understanding of how the forums work before they post a thread.
*with hostility* You saying I can't make new threads? You want to step outside with that argument? (of course I'm joking with this line)
Seriously, an arbitrary designation like post count or registration date doesn't solve the problem. If a person registers yesterday, who but them is to say they haven't been browsing the forums for months before making an account? And then there's people like me who have been here for a fairly good length of time (certainly long enough to understand how the forum works at least), but don't post very often.
And I must say that if you think the Escapist moves fast, you need to get around in some other forums. This place moves a lot slower and more leisurely than I'm use to, which is why I enjoy it so much. Going to sleep on a live topic on the Escapist pushes it back no more than a page out of memory. Going to sleep on a live topic somewhere else can push it dozens of pages out of the community's mind where there is no chance of resurrection by someone other than the thread starter (or original poster as is the title around here).
