The worst experience i had with an online community was Demigod online multi-player for 3 reasons

1 There were only 3 of 8-10 characters you could choose, nicknamed the holy trinity, since doing otherwise would make you persona non grata on any and all servers
2 almost all of the people playing rage-quit, and or are elitists
3 because of the high amount of elitists there is literally no newbie games, they have killed the chance for new players to enter

i think that this game's community is beyond hope

Red Dead was one I loathed. I had two people standing there doing nothing but talking to each other. So I took the ammo nearby and went to Pike's Basin. Two seconds later

'you have 1 vote to kick.'
'you have 2 votes to kick.'

You have been kicked out. You are now going back to Main Menu.

Not to mention the ones like where you are going for a challenge or something and somebody'll kill you off for no reason because they KNOW you are going for the challenge.

Quite true. WoW is the reason why I will avoid RIFT. Because I know the exact same playerbase will exist there, and I dont need another lesson on the dregs of the internet.
I had heard that there was a fair migration from WoW to Rift, which is a shame since Rift looks promising.

OT: WoW. I left it for Lord of the Rings Online, and it's not until you experience such dramatic shift in community that you realise how rubbish the WoW experience has become.

I rarely see hate or rage through offensive language on communities(thinking mostly while in-game). The closest were on a 1v1 ladder game of Starcraft. The guy walled in and expected me to run in and loose my entire army to that. Then I kinda surprised him with an aerial attack on his workers. Raged and called me a fag. 'It's his fault he wasn't prepared for it anyway, learn to scout I say.'

Any game of the variety of HoN, Dota, or LoL is always going to have massive amounts of rage due to the height of the skill "room" that it's in and the dependence of other people.

Company of Heroes.

Me and two friends are still new to the game and we usually make lobbies called "Newbies only", and 90% of the people who join are either a) people with 300+ games or b) smurfs who hide behind a new account but who have played 300+ games. So much for newbies only.
Oh man, people used to do a similar thing in Lost Planet. They would purposely not access their game save so they played with a level 1 character even though they've played enough to reach the maximum level a dozen times. This sucks for a few reasons. For one, killing a low level person gives you very few points relative to the maximum level that they actually are. For instance, because I was level 99 I would lose around 1,400 points when I'm killed versus the ~700 a level 1 person would lose. So if some douche is pretending to be a low level like that and they kill me once, I have to kill them twice just to break even. Fortunately, I was pretty radtastic at the game and I would still manage to win most of the time. But it was still bullshit. To make things worse, the game divides teams by level and I would always get stuck with people who actually were low level players while the fakers got teamed up with other high level players.

TF2, if you read the Steam forums. In game it's an excellent community, but I don't think many of the forum users actually own the game.

QFT. Among the three of them though, DotA is by far the worst. Anyone who's ever tried it without knowing exactly how to play first has felt it's wrath.

Any shooter, but MW2 was probably the worst. I once was involved in a protracted firefight at Sub Base, and actually had the audacity to flank them. Most of the enemy team was in a single room with one of the entrances unguarded, so I just walked in and started shooting, dropping five in as many seconds. The game ended shortly thereafter. A bunch of twelve year olds start screaming at me that I'm a camper and noob for not fighting fairly, even though I simply walked up to them. Do you know what a camper is? I've never been more irritated.

L4D possibly..

Does the community not being able to afford mics count as a problem? Like seriously, it's a tenner, it'd be okay if it was a rare occurrence but I'd say the current ratio would be about 1:4

Which is just not good.
We dont get mics because of 4 year old squeeky voiced loud mouthed little bastards. If we have a mic, that means that we need to talk with them, and its just not worth the migraine those conversations give me.

EDIT: Just noticed that this post made me the devil...
Wonder if that means anything?

Mortal Online. You'd think that the PvP hardcore crowd would realise that they are the smallest of all the groups and usually the biggest pile of hypocritical carebears on the planet. They run about callin every1 else carebears while they cry as soon as theres consequences to ones actions, go figure.

Gears 2 - I found myself hating the constant bitching of the opposition between rounds so much, combined with the elitism "you didn't use a shotgun? you're a noob!" so much so that I stopped playing online almost immediately.

Left 4 Dead - I'm seeing L4D come up alot, what the hell happened to it? It's been around a year since I played it (disc broke) but it used to be one of my favourite games, the community was good, people got along. You had some dicks who'd kick people for not knowing the maps but not many, 95% of the time it was a good fun evening, even with randoms. To see so many on here slating it now makes me wonder just how bad it has become.

BFBC2 - I don't see why so many complain about Snipers/campers. I usually play an engineer but if needs be I'll countersnipe, which can be really fun in itself. Surely guys who throw away choppers/tanks/drive off in a humvee without a gunner are more annoying as they are wasting what can be used as a really good asset. I've found you have to have several different mindsets when you play, either attacking or defending. I used to hate getting owned by Apaches for example, so I trained myself up on Anti Air guns so I could effectively combat them. I will say I stay away from the Forum community though. K/D ratio seems to be akin to dick size and everyone only cares about who is biggest.

I think they all the online gaming communities can potentially ruin games. Look at Counter Strike and Garry's Mod; both high selling games that try to primarily sell their multiplayer. However, none of these games are 100% self-explanatory if you buy them online and don't have a manual. And anyone who's played those games can tell you that a good way to get laughed, shot, or even kicked at is to ask another player for explanation on the game mechanics.

anyone here ever attempted to play metal gear online?

don't do that, the vastly widespread eleitist attitude coupled with the overload of cheaters really forced mediocre players (like myself) to basically quit the game with no hope of improvement
I played it back when MGS4 was new for like a month...it was great but I don't like that type of multiplayer game in general (and MGS shouldn't be about action, it's about sneaking around and long complex story) so I gave it up for fighting games and never looked back...it's sorta obsolete now...so yeah...only elitist hardcore fans would still be left on, makes sense.
I actually thought MGO's weapon system was perfect and fair for those that earn points in the game they can buy weapons with them and attachments and also the player could stop another player from getting enough points for the odd noobtube and people could not make their own cheap classes with that system and the game modes were also fun.

This too, it was present in the first game also. One guy actually proper raged at me [and threatened to kick me] because I gunned him down with a lancer when he was running at me with a shotgun.

I haven't really had much difficulty with the l4d community [and on xbox too!], which is surprising, there's been a few bitches, but they get put in their place pretty quickly [we either leave them behind or let them run on ahead, either way they get destroyed]

World of Warcraft. The community became so bloated and self centered that they had to create a server to keep the elitist assholes on so they wouldn't ruin it for anyone else.

It is also holding the MMO genre back from growing, because everyone will compare it to WOW. No matter how good a game is, it is always going to be compared in a negative light to a game which mechanics are about as outdated as the phonograph.
I agree with you that community of WoW is really flawed and trust me, I would know, Im part of it after all. But Blizzard actually makes the game more easier and open for new players because you cant just ban everyone who is an idiot.

And its not Blizzards problem that everyone is copying them. Blizzard it self said that if someone wants to beat them they have to do something original because they cant beat Blizzard in their own game and if they are still copying Blizzard they are going to fail which is good because because it will force other companies to make games different from forum which is Blizzard using so it will lead to more original MMORPGs.

Just saying. After all this is thread about communities, not companies.

Counter Strike: Source.

Biggest bunch of douchebags I have ever had the misfortune to play with/against. And Ive played Halo. On Xbox Live.
