I just finished portal again for the third time (just can't get enough of the end music), and I thought that it really sucked to kill companion cube. My best friend in the entire game, and I burned him. Well anyway, wouldn't it'd be boss if there were some kind of companion cube footbench, table, chair or something like that? I'd pay a lot for a companion cube pillow that's for sure. Am I just the only one who wants to get a pillow of his burned friend?

That's the interesting thing about the companion cube. It did absolutely nothing. It was just a lump of plastic, like all of the other cubes you hauled around throughout the game. The difference was that GLADOS tried to reinforce the idea that it was your friend, despite it doing nothing. She then expected you to feel sympathy about "killing" it, and was apparently surprised when you didn't hesitate to do so. I always thought this part of the game was supposed to reinforce GLADOS's complete lack of understanding about human emotion. She doesn't really understand how humans form attachments. She thought just by saying the cube was your friend you would care about it.

Then people went around and turned the companion cube into a stupid meme, killing any narrative value it had.

Portal was a good puzzle game and had a funny vibe to it, it's not the greatest game, the cake joke is stupid, and the companion cube was not in any way adorable or endearing.

Unless you're still a small child who loves his widdle teddy bear.
