To be fair, Portal is a puzzle game. It needs no characters, and that is what makes GLaDOS and C-Cube so appreciated. Halo is Sci-Fi. It needs a good plot and character development. But it certainly doesn't have it; plus, companion cube has more personality than Master Chief. And that's just a bloody cube!
Please explain what character the companion cube has. It doesn't say anything. It doesn't do anything. It's just a lump of plastic.
The point wasn't the cube. The cube wasn't anything important. It was how GLaDOS attempted to make you like it. She lauded it, praising it's inability to stab or threaten you. Later on, you find that someone has genuinely become obsessed with it. The humour comes from the absurdity that a cube with no difference from the others besides a few hearts on the side is treated so differently. It's not the cube, it's GLaDOS and Rat-Man that makes the joke.
So then why'd you say that the cube has more personality? The cube having personality isn't the same thing as the way the characters interact with it.
It was a metaphor for just how little characterisation Master Chief has. You could replace my previous statement with, "paperclip," or, "washing machine," or, "dog." It's just that Companion Cube seemed more appropriate, as it was brought up naturally.

This. I think Portal is the most overrated game of all time. The end song isn't funny, the companion cube isn't funny (nor did I think twice about "killing" it) and the cake.....Well, the cake was a little funny at first. So, naturally, the internet ruined it by turning it into a meme. By the way, memes, by their very nature, are not funny. They are in fact something like Joke-Zombies. Jokes that have been dead for a long time, but won't seem to go away.
You so misinterpreted my post. I said that meaning he needs to start wearing those items because he's clearly insane for having such a relationship to an item that was only used in one level.

Nobody cares about your stupid meme-box,it's out of date and it wasn't even funny to begin with.Go back to that pile of shitty memes you call a game.
Wait, what? Portal did not start any memes, the fans did. Again, what?

In other words, you were bashing the halo series even when it has no relevance to the current thread?

If you'll kindly look at the first two posts before you starting discussing this with me, I think you'll find that I was responding to his post, telling him why everyone liked the companion cube, while others criticised Master Chief's lack of characterisation. He says it, not me. I don't really understand why you think I'm bashing it. Elaborate?

If you don't believe the cube actually has more personality than the master chief, your entire post was pointless. He questioned why everyone adored the cube whilst condemning the master chief. You said the cube has more personality. Now you're saying that he actually doesn't, meaning you made a response for the sole sake of bashing Halo. At least that's what your original post implies.

That's the interesting thing about the companion cube. It did absolutely nothing. It was just a lump of plastic, like all of the other cubes you hauled around throughout the game. The difference was that GLADOS tried to reinforce the idea that it was your friend, despite it doing nothing. She then expected you to feel sympathy about "killing" it, and was apparently surprised when you didn't hesitate to do so. I always thought this part of the game was supposed to reinforce GLADOS's complete lack of understanding about human emotion. She doesn't really understand how humans form attachments. She thought just by saying the cube was your friend you would care about it.

Then people went around and turned the companion cube into a stupid meme, killing any narrative value it had.
I think you're giving the writers a bit too much credit, but I have to agree with the retarded memes that were never funny being made by the fans. Portal would be alot more cool if it wasn't for the insane hype and the meme "THE CAKE IS A LIE!" (which doesn't make sense, because the cake is revealed at the end of the game *sigh*).

Didn't you guys know that the companion cube doesn't die? If you go into the previous (or something like that) room you see that it just lands on a platform hanging from the ceiling. It's just a fancy light show. Glados makes you think you killed it. Heres a video link:

I dunno, it just seems like it's reading too much into it. Like the people who claim Halo has like 50 biblical references, that hint at things that happened off screen or whatever. Or people who think squall died half way through FF8

You're giving that great of an idea to a company that made L4D2.

Maybe you're right, though.

Well, if we have to go there. I think the companion cube does. Nothing defines character better than how other people talk and react to them. Look at Bioshock 2's Minerva's Den. Without as much as a single word from the protagonist, I found myself liking him a lot; not because of his characterisation, he didn't talk. It was how the other characters talked and reacted that defined him.
I will admit now for the sake of honesty that for me, Halo is my example of what is wrong with the gaming industry, (people lauding the game with top reviews, ignoring the story and characters because, "that's not what you play games for anyway.") But I do not pointlessly lecture games when they are not relevant. Master Chief is a bland character, (and I'm not saying, "in my opinion," because anything I type will be in my opinion) and companion cube is more interesting for me, as it managed to embody the entire soul of Portal. It was a stroke of genius, that was sadly ruined by too many people taking it seriously.

So wait, if someone finds something endearing moreso than you, they are morons? I mean, I agree with the people saying it wasn't that great, but you can't just tell him his feelings are misplaced.
I'd agree with that if people praised the companion cube because of the game, but they don't. None of this obsession about the companion cube is because of Portal itself. It's because of a meme that came out of the game, that was then blown out of proportion to the point where people who hadn't even played the game were obsessing over it. So when these people did play the game, they were already attached to the companion cube because of the jokes people made about it, rather than the game itself. If it weren't for said meme, nobody would say anything about the companion cube as a character. Just like nobody says anything about the companion sphere. It serves the same exact purpose as the cube, but doesn't have a meme to back it up.
Now that, makes more sense.
