It was a metaphor for just how little characterisation Master Chief has. You could replace my previous statement with, "paperclip," or, "washing machine," or, "dog." It's just that Companion Cube seemed more appropriate, as it was brought up naturally.Internet Kraken said:So then why'd you say that the cube has more personality? You so misinterpreted my post. I said that meaning he needs to start wearing those items because he's clearly insane for having such a relationship to an item that was only used in one level.Frozen Donkey Wheel2 said:This. I think Portal is the most overrated game of all time. The end song isn't funny, the companion cube isn't funny (nor did I think twice about "killing" it) and the cake.....Well, the cake was a little funny at first. So, naturally, the internet ruined it by turning it into a meme. By the way, memes, by their very nature, are not funny. They are in fact something like Joke-Zombies. Jokes that have been dead for a long time, but won't seem to go away.SnootyEnglishman said:I think you need to start wearing a strait jacket and need to be placed in a padded room.

If you'll kindly look at the first two posts before you starting discussing this with me, I think you'll find that I was responding to his post, telling him why everyone liked the companion cube, while others criticised Master Chief's lack of characterisation. If you don't believe the cube actually has more personality than the master chief, your entire post was pointless. He questioned why everyone adored the cube whilst condemning the master chief. You said the cube has more personality. Now you're saying that he actually doesn't, meaning you made a response for the sole sake of bashing Halo. I think you're giving the writers a bit too much credit, but I have to agree with the retarded memes that were never funny being made by the fans. Portal would be alot more cool if it wasn't for the insane hype and the meme "THE CAKE IS A LIE!" (which doesn't make sense, because the cake is revealed at the end of the game *sigh*).Internet Kraken said:That's the interesting thing about the companion cube. It did absolutely nothing. It was just a lump of plastic, like all of the other cubes you hauled around throughout the game. The difference was that GLADOS tried to reinforce the idea that it was your friend, despite it doing nothing. She then expected you to feel sympathy about "killing" it, and was apparently surprised when you didn't hesitate to do so. I always thought this part of the game was supposed to reinforce GLADOS's complete lack of understanding about human emotion. She doesn't really understand how humans form attachments. She thought just by saying the cube was your friend you would care about it.The Austin said:Jesus Christ, it was with you for ONE LEVEL. It was exactly the same as every other cube, except it had a heart painted on it.
It was with you for ONE. LEVEL.
Then people went around and turned the companion cube into a stupid meme, killing any narrative value it had.

I dunno, it just seems like it's reading too much into it. Like the people who claim Halo has like 50 biblical references, that hint at things that happened off screen or whatever. Or people who think squall died half way through FF8Internet Kraken said:skywalkerlion said:I think you're giving the writers a bit too much credit, but I have to agree with the retarded memes that were never funny being made by the fans. Well, if we have to go there. I think the companion cube does. Nothing defines character better than how other people talk and react to them. Look at Bioshock 2's Minerva's Den. Without as much as a single word from the protagonist, I found myself liking him a lot; not because of his characterisation, he didn't talk. It was how the other characters talked and reacted that defined him.Internet Kraken said:If you don't believe the cube actually has more personality than the master chief, your entire post was pointless. Now that, makes more sense.Internet Kraken said:I'd agree with that if people praised the companion cube because of the game, but they don't. None of this obsession about the companion cube is because of Portal itself. It's because of a meme that came out of the game, that was then blown out of proportion to the point where people who hadn't even played the game were obsessing over it. So when these people did play the game, they were already attached to the companion cube because of the jokes people made about it, rather than the game itself. If it weren't for said meme, nobody would say anything about the companion cube as a character. Just like nobody says anything about the companion sphere. It serves the same exact purpose as the cube, but doesn't have a meme to back it up.Sephychu said:So wait, if someone finds something endearing moreso than you, they are morons?
