So wait, if someone finds something endearing moreso than you, they are morons? I mean, I agree with the people saying it wasn't that great, but you can't just tell him his feelings are misplaced.

I'd agree with that if people praised the companion cube because of the game, but they don't. None of this obsession about the companion cube is because of Portal itself. It's because of a meme that came out of the game, that was then blown out of proportion to the point where people who hadn't even played the game were obsessing over it. So when these people did play the game, they were already attached to the companion cube because of the jokes people made about it, rather than the game itself. If it weren't for said meme, nobody would say anything about the companion cube as a character. Just like nobody says anything about the companion sphere. It serves the same exact purpose as the cube, but doesn't have a meme to back it up.

I disagree, no one talks about companion sphere because he was a dick who doesn't reflect the projectiles properly...that and he was in the advanced maps and not everyone will have played to there.

I just finished portal again for the third time (just can't get enough of the end music), and I thought that it really sucked to kill companion cube. My best friend in the entire game, and I burned him. Well anyway, wouldn't it'd be boss if there were some kind of companion cube footbench, table, chair or something like that? I'd pay a lot for a companion cube pillow that's for sure. Am I just the only one who wants to get a pillow of his burned friend?

To be fair, Portal is a puzzle game. It needs no characters, and that is what makes GLaDOS and C-Cube so appreciated. Halo is Sci-Fi. It needs a good plot and character development. But it certainly doesn't have it; plus, companion cube has more personality than Master Chief. And that's just a bloody cube!

The point wasn't the cube. The cube wasn't anything important. It was how GLaDOS attempted to make you like it. She lauded it, praising it's inability to stab or threaten you. Later on, you find that someone has genuinely become obsessed with it. The humour comes from the absurdity that a cube with no difference from the others besides a few hearts on the side is treated so differently. It's not the cube, it's GLaDOS and Rat-Man that makes the joke.

So then why'd you say that the cube has more personality? The cube having personality isn't the same thing as the way the characters interact with it.

This. I think Portal is the most overrated game of all time. The end song isn't funny, the companion cube isn't funny (nor did I think twice about "killing" it) and the cake.....Well, the cake was a little funny at first. So, naturally, the internet ruined it by turning it into a meme. By the way, memes, by their very nature, are not funny. They are in fact something like Joke-Zombies. Jokes that have been dead for a long time, but won't seem to go away.
