"A-alright. Thank you," she said, sitting next to Kadence. Pru also got some seeds out for Sue, who happily started eating. "Um, what should I do?" Prudence had never eaten anything that wasn't served to her.

"What do you mean, 'What should you do'?" Lev asked her as he sat a little away from the fire with his spear resting horizontally in his lap. "You take your food and heat it over the fire, preferably with a stick, but you can always use a knife or something if you don't have a stick close by." He told her as he glanced down at the firewood he had gathered earlier, there might possibly be a good enough stick somewhere in that small pile, but telling her that would be close to insinuating that she wasn't bright enough to figure that out herself.

He turned his head as he rested both his elbows on the spear as he stared out into the darkness around them, which was slowly becoming darker, like ink seeping into a sheet of paper.

Kadence took some of her already prepared fish and carefully tore the packing sheet in half. Silently she slid the improvised plate of meat over toward Pru. Then Kadence then began eating her own portion. Occasionally she brought her dagger back out to cut the meat, taking a moment to clean the blade afterward. The fish was properly cooked but did not have much flavor. However Kadence was hungry enough that the lack of flavor was only a fleeting observation. When she finished the meal Kadence tossed the leftover bones and paper into the fire and spent a few minutes watching the items disappear in the flames. When the last scrap of paper disappeared Kadence walked over to where her bedroll was laid out. She spoke to Lev and Pru as she adjusted the bed setup.

"Wake me up when you get tired of being on watch, please." She said quietly, looking at the young doctor with a serious expression. She didn't want him to have to be awake all night. Kadence pulled a small blanket, one that was originally a headrest, from her pack and placed it on the ground. "If you need a blanket..." Kadence looked at Pru and pointed to the now neatly folded cloth. "...you can use this one."

As the young woman shook out the bedroll blankets out Garret awoke up from his light slumber. The wolf sat up and yawned. He then watched as his partner prepared for sleep. Kadence shook the blanket up and then down again trying get the cloth material as flat as she could manage. Finally she was satisfied with the layout. Kadence sat down on the blanket and lay on her side. She pulled the leftover blanket material over top of herself and wriggled around until she was comfortable.

When Kadence stopped moving Garret walked over and plopped down beside of his partner with his side pressed up against her back. The wolf was close enough that his body radiated heat that was noticeable through the thin layer of the blanket. 'At least I won't get cold...' Kadence thought with a slight grin. Then she closed her eyes and starting counting slowly. After only a few minutes she fell asleep.

Lev sat with his back to the small fire as he was keeping an eye on the darkness surrounding them, the reason for this being as simple as to try and adjust his eyes to the night, even just a little.

"This used to be so much easier..." He muttered silently to himself and sighed, not wanting to wake his traveling companions before his watch was over, and remembered when he used to have perfect night-sight a few years ago. And, of course, that made him remember Vana as well. Memories both happy and sad, but mostly sad. The others seemed to slip from his mind more and more for each passing day, trying to keep them was like holding onto fresh snow and watch it melt and flow through your fingers. The only really vivid memory remaining was the one that held the most sadness, like a small pebble inside the snow. Loosing Vana had been a real blow to him, and it was certainly not like having somebody you cared for die, but almost like having a part of your mind killed off. Even now a small part of his consciousness felt numb, like it was refusing to move on, but he could understand, even if he was trying to deny it.

The subtle sound of a branch snapping made Lev rise from his pack and quickly brace his spear in the direction he thought he had heard something, and where a large shadow was moving towards them, it's yellow eyes reflecting the flickering light given off by the fire. Lev had his suspicions at first, not wavering with his spear, even as a slight feeling of safety nudged at him, but lowered it as the felines orange and black fur became more visible in the dim light.

"So you've decided to return?" Lev asked her with a little skepticism as he sat back down. Tatiana merely walked up beside him and laid down near the fire, placing her paws in front of her and curling her tail around her as she looked at the slumbering bear with a certain amount of distaste. "You really don't like him, do you?" Lev said with a slight grin, his mocking tone being received by a cold glare from the tigress before night fell on them all in earnest.

Zestia moved about in her bedroll. She was dreaming. In her dream, a horrible thing had happened. She was looking down at her father, his eyes were missing and he had a look of horror on his face. She was crying, Shade beside her looked at Zestia's father's corpse. All around them, there was fire. Flames were on top of rooftops, in the streets and on everyone, except Zestia and Shade, along with Landon, Zestia's father. In a distance, Zestia caught the figure of someone. She couldn't see if it was a man or a woman, old or young. It was no child, she saw. The figure approached her. She started backing away from it. The figure grinned, showing a row of razor sharp, white teeth. It's eyes turned red and it cackled madly. "Fleeing, are we?" the figure spoke with a deep voice, almost sounded like there were two voices, a male one and a female one. The figure drew a sword, Landon's sword. Zestia didn't know what to do. Shade crawled to the figure and attacked the figure by biting it's leg. The figure reacted by cutting Shade's head off, his body fell to the ground limp, his head still on the figure's leg. "Do you see now what happens to those who oppose me? Your precious town, your dear father and now your pet, all dead and destroyed. Return to me, be by my side and I'll make sure you survive." It cackled again. "Never!" Zestia yelled, tears flowing from her eyes and she was on her knees. "Pity." the figure said. It approached Zestia, who didn't make any attempt to stand up and flee. The figure raised the sword and swung it at her. She woke up just before the sword hit her. She sat up, breathing heavily and sweating. Shade looked at her and crawled to her, going to her lap and lay there. Zestia had tears in her eyes while she petted the head of Shade.

"A horrid nightmare, was it not?" said Badelin crouched right next to Zestia in a calm tone "Do no be afraid for it was nothing but fantasy"

He then stood up and slowly moved away from Zestia. With his back to Zestian he spoke in an almost whisper-like way:

"I hope that you shall face such horror no more. Not as the wretched curse which plagues my days and nights"

Zestia nodded. "I-it was. I know it was only fantasy. I don't know if I can talk about it..." She still had tears in her eyes, her breathing was normal and she wasn't sweating as much.

What was that dream? That has never happened, and hopefully will never happen. Damn these nightmares of mine...

Zestia barely heard what Badelin said. She wondered why he said that. What curse? she thought, but didn't work up the courage to ask. She lied back down in her bedroll and just lay there for an undetermined time until she fell asleep, Shade lying on top of her, protecting her.

Dawn...Morning
Town Info: Meyerill is a small town, with most of the businesses being family run. The town is circular with houses at the outer boundaries and businesses scattered around the town square, which is in the middle. The main road runs from the east gate, splits to go around the town center, then joins up into one road again to reach the west gate. There is a guardhouse immediately to the right when visitors enter the either gate. There are almost a dozen pieces of paper fastened to the outside of both guard houses. On the papers are sketches of young men and women with the word MISSING underneath. The guards, who are constantly on patrol, are all visibly tense.
Morning Report
Owen Hunter, Captain of the Guards of Meyerill.

This morning at dawn, two Dryton woodsmen found one of the missing children in the forest. They brought the boy's body and what was left of his gear to our doctor for identification and examination. I arrived shortly after the doctor began his examination. While the doctor worked the woodsmen explained to me that the area where they found the boy was completely almost completely destroyed. They found claw marks and burns deep in the ground, and even in the trees. Just like the area where my scouts found the first victim, a girl...a young woman who had just turned eighteen.

According to the doctor the boy died sometime during the night. The boy's clothing was charred, torn, and bloodied in various places. His pack and gear was shredded into pieces. Beneath his tattered clothing the boy's body was bruised and battered. His neck was snapped in a clearly fatal blow. The doctor's assistant asked to be excused toward the end of the examination. We didn't fault the young man for his request. It was a brutal death. Especially for a child. Only some kind of monster could do such a thing.

The poor lad couldn't have been older than fifteen. After searching through our reports we were finally able to identify the boy as Rausic Sun. A potter's son from Selven. He was a long way from home, trying to complete the king's quest.

Four people have been reported missing in our town, either by family members or members of a travel group. One of the Dryton woodsman informed me that their town now reports three people missing. Rausic makes two people found, six still missing. We have yet to find anyone alive. I fear Rausic's fate will be shared by the remaining missing people.

Dryton's Captain and I have each sent a messenger bird to Tarusen to warn them and see if they have any additional reports. We have yet to get an response. This worries me but the Dryton Captain is not concerned. Of course, he is ten years younger than I and new to his position...but there is no need to go into that further...

Meyerill's town council is preparing to send a messenger to the Gemmel to inform the king of the disappearances.
The Captain of the Guard ran out of ink. He stopped writing and used his sleeve to wipe sweat from his brow. The stocky middle-aged man let out a frustrated sigh and put more ink on his quill. He resuming writing.

We don't know what we are facing. We thought it might be a rogue group of bandits. Something human. But now we are not sure. Our best Companions can't get a scent. Our best huntsman can't find anything to track. There are boot prints that just...end. Vanish into thin air.

Blast the wretched thing that did this!
The Captain's mailed left hand hit the sturdy oak table with a resounding thud. His right hand kept writing.

To make matters worse our search party is late. Five of my best men set out yesterday afternoon and have yet to return. Lord Peirce has forbidden us from sending another search party. 'We need men to guard the town.', he said. Since this town is built on his land, we must obey him. For now.

So I came up with a schedule. A constant rotation of patrols so that the town is guarded at all times. The guards at the gates have been instructed to warn travelers to stay away from the dark forests and not to travel at night. We will have to rely on the Dryton guards to do the searching from now on.
The Captain paused for a few moments. He sat back in his chair. Sunlight shone in from the window and illuminated the bottle of ink. The man began to write slowly.

The town is adjusting to the threat. For safety, we've set a curfew for the young children in the town. And some of the young adults as well.

As of this morning Connor, the butcher's son has taken over his father's job at his mother's request. His father was part of the first search party...John. He's a good man. I hope he returns to us soon. The baker's daughter...
Abruptly someone began pounding on the door of the guard house. The sound echoed down the empty hall. The Captain sighed heavily and quickly finished writing his last few sentences.

'That is probably young Jayce.' The Captain realized. Jayce's older brother Hugh was the first to be reported missing. The nineteen-year-old had gone out of town to hunt and never returned. Jayce constantly tracked the Captain down to see if there was any new information on his brother. 'Every time I've had to tell him 'No'.' With no parents to speak of, Hugh was all the fifteen-year-old Jayce had.

The Captain set his paper and quill aside and rose from his chair. He grimaced as he realized he once again had no good news to tell Jayce. The boy was not going to be happy.

'I just hope he doesn't do something rash...' Owen walked down the hall and opened the front door.

Morning...Afternoon

Kadence squinted up at the bright sun. The group had been traveling for a few hours now and she was beginning to get hungry. Beside of her, Garret had his tongue out and was panting quietly. 'I figured we'd be there by now. Kadence thought. She peered down the path ahead and tilted her head slightly, as if the town would miraculously appear if she looked a different way.

Zestia had taken the role of group leader, without meaning to or without anyone saying anything. But she was the one walking in front of the group and the one with the map. They had been walking for a few hours and Zestia was hot because of the bright sun. "You're lucky you have cold blood. Steam would come off of you if you'd have hot blood like me." she said to Shade, who was lay on her shoulders. He just looked at her, then tickled her cheek. She giggled at it and kept walking. As she did, she noticed a few people in front of her. She wondered if they were another group on the quest. She walked up to them. "Excuse me, but if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing?"

As Badelin was riding slowly on Dax, he noticed in front of him that Zestia was aproaching another group. He then quickly stood upwards on Dax's saddle and jumped of into one of the trees, rapidly making his way up it and then jumping from one branch to another until he rested exactly above Zestia and the other group.

"I will eavesdrop from up here and in case the situation takes a turn for the worse, the surprise of an ambush will certainly favour me and Zestia, will it not?" said Badelin as he curiously waited for the discussion to come.

". . . How-- How much longer do you think it's going to be?" Prudence finally asked Kadence. She was trying to keep as close behind her friend as she could while at the same time staying as far away from Lev as possible. "I'm, just getting tired, is all." The trip was wearing on her. She wasn't used to carrying heavy things -- like her pack-- much less for any length of distance. At one point she attempted to read a book while she walked but it had proven too difficult.

"It shouldn't be much longer." Kadence replied to the young noble. She held up Pru's map in one hand and shook it open. "It looks like the town should be over the next hill." She pointed forward toward said hill. The path sloped down and then up again. Just enough to prevent a clear view of what was up ahead.

Mixed feelings of curiosity and suspicion filtered from Garret. Kadence stopped moving immediately. The curiosity had become standard as the group covered more and more new ground. But the suspicion was new. Kadence turned around and stepped to the side to avoid running into Pru. Kadence spotted her Companion back down the path they'd come from. He had backtracked and was almost at Lev and Viktorya. Next to them...were people Kadence didn't recognize.

"Oops." Kadence mumbled. She blamed the heat for her inattention. "It looks like we may have...company." she said in an even tone to Prudence. She pocketed the map and walked toward the gathering of people. Garret sat down in the middle of the road and waited for his partner.

Lev walked a few good paces behind Kadence and Pru, mostly because he was getting annoyed at the blond woman's increasingly obvious attempts to avoid him. She had even taken to looking over her shoulder at him in fear as he had started lagging behind them, like she was scared the he would suddenly turn into a madman and stab her. The sun burning his neck and the god-awful heat didn't do him any favours either, and by now he was certain that he looked a lot more hostile now than before. Hostile and with his shirt wet and sticky with sweat, what the heck had possessed him to make him choose a white shirt anyway?

Tatiana however, did not notice her companions discomfort, as she was more than occupied with her own at the moment. Even her dislike for the bear had taken a back-seat as she had almost started panting from the heat, actively seeking out any small amount of shade she could find as they moved onward. Right now she had walked a little ahead of Lev and taken to resting in the shade of a large oak.

"Excuse me, but if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing?"

Lev heard a female voice utter just behind him as he passed into the shade himself, and with Kadence and Pru up ahead of him, and Viktorya not currently paying attention, he was probably the one that the question was directed at, how joyous.
He halted and planted the butt of his spear into the dirt road a little harder than strictly necessary, digging it slightly into the dry and flaky road in annoyance before turning to face the woman.

"We are walking. In case you didn't notice." He replied sarcastically, not doing anything to hide his annoyance at the situation, and with sweat dripping from his hair.

In the background Tatiana had stopped as well, glad for the possibility of a short rest. She had just shook her head a little to shake loose some of her remaining winter fur when she heard rusting up above, accompanied by a few leaves lazily floating to the ground due to the lack of wind. She was immediately a bit curious about this, but quickly dismissed it as she realised how tiring it would be to climb the tree, and that it was probably just a bird or a squirrel anyway.

Zestia was a bit startled by the man's annoyance towards her. She'd only asked a simple, innocent question. Shade lay on her shoulders, watching the man and the Siberian tiger, waiting for Zestia to give him the word if a fight was inevitable.

"Yes, I did notice. I was only wondering what a group of such different individuals was doing out here on the way to Meyerill." She did her best not to answer back with snark. She usually had little patience for those who were short tempered or annoyed, but she'd rather not have to fight if she could avoid it. Crimson and Jade lay holstered in her belt.

"Isn't it obvious?" Lev asked with a sigh, "The king's quest, what other reasons would there be now that close to everybody has either been blinded by money, fame, or excitement?"

His mind a little calmer now that his initial annoyance at being interrupted during what was quickly becoming one of his most hellishly hot journeys to date, he took a closer look at the woman, and the snake coiled up on her shoulders. The woman was dressed in quite a shady attire, with her clothes mostly being dark and sporting a hood. In addition she had two daggers fastened on her belt and the snake seemed like it was of the venomous type. All in all, if she hadn't come up to them and begun talking he would have been sure that she was a bandit or rogue, and that was still a possibility.

"Not more people," Prudence moaned. She stopped moving and turned around, watching as everyone got into a group at the back of the party. Her companion flew back to her favorite shoulder just as Kadence had walked away and looked on curiously at the newcomers. Please let them go away, Pru pleased to nobody.

Zestia chuckled at the man's remark. "True. We're also on the king's quest. It's been a little rough on the way here, but we've survived." She looked around her and saw a woman approaching them. Sai and Avi stood back and let Zestia do the talking, Avi especially so, considering she wasn't used to talk to others in any other way than a tavern maid. Shade had relaxed a bit, but still had his eyes on the man and the Siberian Tiger. He used a moment to tickle Zestia's cheek with his tongue, which made her giggle a bit, then he watched the man and the tiger again. "Not now, Shade. I'm trying to talk." she said, smiling.

Kadence caught up to Garrett. The wolf huffed quietly before starting to walk at his partner's size. As the messenger walked toward the group she caught the bits and pieces of the conversation.

"We're also on the king's quest."

'Another group of questers?' Kadence glanced over the new group, taking in the three woman and their rather differing outfits. One of them looked like a guard, the other was a young girl, 'How old is she?' Kadence wondered, looking curiously at the girl who seemed to be hovering in the background. Lastly her gaze settled on the woman who seemed to be the 'leader' of the group.

The messenger found it interesting that the members off the group were all female. Garret snorted quietly and Kadence looked down at him with a confused tilt of her head. The wolf raised his muzzle and sniffed at the air. Not having his keen senses, Kadence dismissed the motion as him scenting the new arrivals. Or possibly any food that they carried with them.

Kadence moved closer so that she was only a few steps away from the group. She offered a small wave and a smile. "Hello there." she said, addressing the woman she took to be the 'leader' of the new group. She stood with one hand hooked under the strap of her bag in a relaxed stance. Garret began to circle around his partner, slowly, casting his nose up in the air every few seconds.

"Talking about rough..." Lev said as he used one of his fingers to loosen the collar of his shirt a little. "A conversation would be a lot more welcoming if we could move out of this burning sun and into the shade, preferably somewhere with some drink as well." He said as he looked over at the tired tiger lying under the tree.

"So I suggest we just head for the town and talk there if nobody objects, from what I heard you say earlier it shouldn't be far, right Kadence?" He asked her as he turned from the conversation and started walking at his own pace down the road again, Tatiana following somewhat reluctantly.

Zestia looked at the woman who had approached them. She waved back. "Hello there yourself." she said with a soft smile. Shade looked at the woman, but did nothing else.

"I agree. This attire is not the best one for wearing in the sun. I'd like to talk more once we've gotten into a shade. With a drink, if that's possible." She started walking behind the man, Sai and Avi followed her.
