Has a complaint about a game ever confused you?

For example:
When I saw the reviews of the original Kingdom Hearts, they seemed to complain about the terrible camera a lot. So after some friends convinced me to get it (I wanted to fight Cloud, Squall, and Sephiroth) I found myself confused about the complaints. This camera is bad? Admittedly, I used the lock-on function to target the enemy I wanted to kill first 99% of the time, so maybe that helped me. Still, I couldn't help but feel lied to.

Getting the camera right in any third person game, is going to be a chore. You have to make the player see what you want them to, what they need to, and see all the action on screen so that fights don't become a chore and dangerous obstacles don't remain off-screen until they kill the player.

If you're going to complain about the camera it should be unforgivably bad. The camera should get close up in large action scenes, get stuck in an angle that prevents you from seeing what you need to, or be unwieldy. In my experience, the camera rarely caused me trouble in Kingdom Hearts. If ever! Saying that the camera was bad in Kingdom Hearts was like saying that combat was bad in Assassin's Creed. It might have had some issues, but it functioned very well.

So, Escapists, ever hear/read a complaint that didn't really pan out?

The quantitative game length should never be a reason to take off points. If you feel a game isn't worth $60, it shouldn't influence your score because game price is not fixed, and a year later, you can probably get that game for like $20. However, if a game feels like it's artificially extended to be longer than it should be or if a game ends before it should, then I can see taking off points. For example, I've read a lot of people say The Force Unleashed 2 ends abruptly, that's a valid reason to take off points. Some games are just right at 8 hours whereas other games are just right at 50 hours.

I don't know if this counts, but when one of my sisters first saw me playing Minecraft she said "this game has really bad graphics." I just about slapped her.

Hah, Thats probably the biggest one for me too. You could render every last little detail on space marine #74840's overly rugged face but in the end your playing the same dull game that you've always been playing. As long as you can tell whats going on, graphics should never be counted against a game.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I actually think that Minecraft is a beautiful game. The randomly generated environments in particular can be amazing.

Bad controls on a game that lets you set the controls. Admittedly, you shouldn't have to reprogram the controls on a professionally made game, but, if you really can't get comfortable with them, and you don't change them, then that just strikes me as not taking initiative.

I seriously can't understand how anyone can complain about Nier.

It gets so much shit for... pretty much everything, yet it's one of the best games I've ever played

"Oh that game is rated E/is LEGO/is too kiddy looking, it must suck and it's GAY!!!"

I feel like I want to murder any idiot who judges a game in this way.

Aesthetics are part of an experience. It's just a matter of how big a factor they play.

"navi is annoying"

I know that she is annoying, and "Hey! Listen!" gets old after the first couple of times, but basically Navi is a hold your hand and help you out character designed to help people who are lost in the game or are just plain not used to vidja games. Of course that type of a character will be annoying. Any character that assumes you are an idiot and tells you what to do every minute is annoying by default. That was the role of navi. It would have been difficult to make her helpful and likable at the same time.

I prefer her being annoying, because any story with all likable characters is just plain boring. You need annoying characters to make the hero seem less annoying.

You too? Toy Story 3 is so much fun.

Yet noone believes me.
Most people pass it off as a dumb kid's game, an that it's just shovelware that happened to not get terrible reviews.
It does a fantastic job of making an accessible action platformer, and even my mom could play it and have fun, so I'll call it a win.

OT: Pretty much what RatRace said.

"Bad Graphics"

Look, the weakest of current generation graphics are masterworks compared to the previous generation and the one before that and so on. They were still fun. Asking for better and better Graphics makes game development even more of a money sink and takes away even more from the Fun and Innovation budgets.

"It's too colourful and kiddy so it's Teh Gay"

God forbid a game where characters express emotion besides macho-ness or force you to go for more than a minute without covering yourself another being's entrails. Yahtzee mocks this disturbingly warped mindset really well on occasion, as does Arby n' the Chief.

When someone says they didn't like Wind waker's graphics, I cock my head sideways and continuously stare at them until they go away.

Complaints against Bioshock 2 for its "lack of originality."

In a world where Super Mario Galaxy 2 gets nominated for GOTY, lack of originality is no longer allowed to be a factor. Lack of originality does not exsist in a world where Nintendo has been making the same Zelda game since 1991.
