Concept: A medieval call of duty?

Imagine a call of duty that takes place even before the invention of rifles, explosives, and air support. A Call of Duty: Medieval Warfare, if you will. In such a game, weapons would consist of mostly melee weapons, including shields, swords, morning stars, etc. It would also feature long range weapons like bows, slings, and a long reloading crossbow.

What are your thoughts of this kind of game? Would you buy and play this for the normal price of a video game nowadays?

What are your ideas for features like weapons, perks, attachments, and killstreaks?

No.

I cant see COD being all about melee weapons. Plus this would not even be COD, everything would be to different to call it a COD game.

Wouldn't really be Call of Duty if everything(characters, setting, gameplay, etc) was radically different, with no real connection to the rest of the series, would it?

It wouldn't work with COD gameplay, for a game like that to work well, the game would have be designed directly to work with the setting.

I would DEFINITELY play it. Swords > Guns in my style books.

However COD games are always first-person, and melee combat is always a massive pain in first person, because you can barely tell where the enemy is through all the shields and flashing swords across your HUD.

But yeah, a class based, third-person hack and slasher with perks, upgrades and unlocks would be AWESOME.

Actually, no, no it wouldn't. The game would still be a first person game where you run around controlling only one person.

I mostly just said call of duty to give people the same general idea of a multiplayer where you play in teams where you customize what your character wields, and try to get as many kills as you can. I could have also said, to an extent, Singularity, Medal of Honor, or Halo. Also, why would you not want to play the game, if I may ask?

No, cause the moment you get close enough to engage in a sword fight, they're just gonna insta-kill knife you.
In a game where most kills are melee, I hightly doubt it would be made where melee is instant kill. I more or less see a game like this with either slow regenerating health or no regeneration. Also, a morning star would deal more damage, but a sword would be quicker.

If you compare, for example, Modern Warfare with Black Ops, you'll find that there are no characters that are the same and the settings are different. A "Medieval Warfare" game would have a lot of different aspects to it compared to previous CoD games, but it would have similar aspects to it as well, like perks, attachments, and maybe even killstreaks where you blow a horn to signal a storm of arrows or a catapult. One thing is for sure, people won't be able to ***** and moan that it's the same as all the other CoD games like they do with games like MW2 and Black Ops.

On Topic. Eh, it might work. They'd have to get rid of the insta-kill knife, though. Maybe have a Flaming Bolt for the Crossbow or Longbow, add in some legit sneaking for rogueish classes, I could see it MAYBE working.
I like the thought of a flaming bolt. Would be good for getting rid of light, wooden shields that the enemy might be using. However, it'd take time to light each arrow, so there would be a trade off. Yeah, instant kill knifing would be taken out since a lot of kills would naturally be close range. As for rogue classes, perhaps a stealth perk similar to ninja, combined with a dagger that does instant kill an enemy if it's from behind.

There already is a game like this, in fact. A Half-Life 2 mod available free on Steam called Age of Chivalry. There's no perks or anything, but it is a medieval first person combat game. It's like playing counterstrike with swords, axes, hammers, bows and crossbows.

I've played a fair bit of AoC and it's pretty fun, if you can get used to it. That leads me to believe a CoD version would be feasible and it's definitely something I'd try out.

Sounds nothing like Call of Duty.

However, I would like to see more Medieval (preferably without Magic) games being made. Especially ones that aren't RTS/RPG. Basically something like Mount and Blade's multiplayer with a bigger budget behind it and more polish.

Anyway, you asked for ideas:

Weapons: Every Medieval weapon ever, even if the time period is wrong or that weapon was super rare IRL.

Perks: Mostly the same system as CoD, you could even reuse some perks like Lightweight or Hardline.

Attachments: You'd have to call them "Upgrades" but they could be things like "Lightened Blade" or "Refined Steel".

Killstreaks: Hard to have air support in a medieval game, most of them should be equipment or powerups. Thought of a few for fun:
3)Poisoned Blade: Next melee attack becomes instant kill.
3)Conviction: Health boosted to x3 for 20 seconds (can be knocked back to normal by damage)
5)Volley: Call in a volley of several dozen arrows in an area.
6)Grenade: Get access to a single bomb.
8)Bombardment: Call in a strike from an off-map catapult.
10)Berserk: Every attack made in the next 30 seconds will deal x4 damage.
12)Block out the Sun: Pincushion an entire section of the map with a black cloud of arrows.
25)Tactical Nuke.
The link you gave is interesting. I'll have to look into some videos of it. And yes, this is a far cry from CoD in terms of the types of weapons, but judging by your suggestions, I think you understand the kind of feel I was suggesting.

Weapons: Maybe not every ancient weapons, but maybe weapons from various parts of Europe, middle east, and maybe parts of asia like India. It could have weapons like katars, realistic battle axes, spears, etc. But yeah, a wide variety of weapons with their own advantages.

Perks: Right, most of the perks could be the same, but maybe changed in name according to the period.

Attachments: Yeah, I could see those as possible attachments for a swordsman based class. For archers, I could see attachments like double arrow shooting and different tips.

Killstreaks: I could definitely see a few of those, like bombardment and block out the sun. As for the Tactical Nuke, maybe it could be the Black Plague where catapults launch infected corpses, or Reinforcements where a massive army sweeps in to finish off the enemy.

I like people who want a game that already exist, or something in a game that already is in a game. Please do your research. The game is called Age of Chivalry and it is a source mod, hence it is free. Get steam. Download it. Play it. Enjoy it, it is an awesome game, buggy, but very good.

I would love to have the Modern Warfare Engine and cinematic campaign setting in a medieval FP game!

It would probably turn out like Dark Messiah, but with not-so-broken gameplay.
