Can't say I've watched it myself. I have to admit I seem to be slow on catching onto awesome up and coming cartoons, but for some reason My Little Pony doesn't seem to grab me. Like others, I find the macros kinda funny, but I highly doubt that they equal the show in the idea of funny-ness [at least in my opinion]

I still think the funniest show I've seen recently has been Superjail!, and I'm wondering how long/if at all this show will reach the same levels of cultism [because tbh, its fucking awesome and should be worshipped by everyone]

It's just a 'thing', nothing more. Pick any random thing that has a small following, obsess over it, spread the word, lather, rinse, repeat and boom, instant hit.

It's happened with many things. In my high school it was Winnie the Pooh. Grown teenagers wearing Pooh shirts, Eeyore Backpacks and Piglet shoes. It was cute, it was kiddie and it took over the whole school. Then I remember these ring pops, or pacifier pops. Everyone had them, they were the stupidest thing ever, but something that was a niche quickly grew to popularity.

Snap bracelets are another thing. Just something else people went 'ape shit' over.

Things will come, things will go, thus is the way of the world. If you think about it, Pokemon was very similar to this, but just on a grander scale.

I'm about to leave the house, but I shall look into the first 3 episodes when I get home, can they be youtubed?

And as for what is Superjail? Imagine a prison, run by Willy Wonka. Tis literally the best way I can describe it. He has a personal assistant who is fighting all sorts of demons [drink addiction, gambling addiction, drug addiction, you name it, Jared's been addicted to it], his head guard is a post op transgender hairy chested bloke called Alice, and to top it off he has an aweeeesome robot called Jailbot to help him as well. Oh and the Twins. Some rather strange, Eastern European sounding magical beings who can teleport themselves around, and generally like to mess up the jail for the Warden

It's one of the most messed up bits of television I've ever seen, and its amazing haha.

Pilot episode, just for your enjoyment.

Warning: The follow video contains scenes of gore/blood/violence, and is generally messed up beyond high-heaven

I genuinely enjoy the show, and I was very sceptical at first. I don't think that people change their identities to fit the show (or at least, I have never met such people). I think what I like about the show is that it is a childrens' show with some of the elements I enjoyed when I was a kid. I find cartoons nowadays quite... well, not hard to understand, but hard to like, I suppose. My Little Pony has good humour, I find, and it is a show I can watch without really getting into it (which is quite nice in my exam time...).

You say "you all" as if all the fans of the show, or not even that, just people who watch, have changed their identities to fit it. I don't agree with you, OP, though I respect your views :)

First off, serious question here. Have you watched the show?
One episode. Didn't care for it.

TriGGeR_HaPPy said:
Now, since I seem to be the perfect response to this whole post, I'll use personal examples against your points. Please don't think that this means I'm the exception to the rule, though, since my examples apply to almost all of the other real fans of the show, too.

"Unwarranted smugness"? No. Just no. I'll post responses to threads like these, and maybe join in on posting a few pony pictures here and there. That =/= being smug.
You pronounce yourself the perfect response to my post, claim you will use your own personal example against my points because they apply to the majority of your fellow fans, and then claim not to be smug. Okay, I guess.

TriGGeR_HaPPy said:
"Semi-conscious devotees of a fad." You imply in this paragraph that all the fans of this show are saying they're fans and acting the part, because it's a fad? Again, no. I've never joined in on internet-fads before. Name a recent internet-fad, and I'll answer you honestly if I joined in or not, but I can tell you now that I'll almost certainly answer with "I didn't join in".
So, then you aren't one of the "devotees" I mentioned? You're just someone who likes the show. Okay. Well then, what is your problem with me?

TriGGeR_HaPPy said:
So, why am I joining in now, then? Because I like the show. Plain and simple.
(I must also point out that if you think "My Little Pony" is part of pop culture, then you are grievously mistaken. On the internet, that may be the case. But admit that you like the show in real life and see if the response you get is similar to saying you enjoy any other not-online pop culture piece.)
So, your problem with me is that I have a problem with people you do not directly affiliate yourself with, in fact you are in way superior, but are connected by cartoon ponies that somehow aren't really part of pop culture because it is a television show with a large internet fanbase filled with fans, such as yourself. Umm... okay?

TriGGeR_HaPPy said:
So if you're sick of seeing a ridiculous amount of MLP threads, blame the haters, not the fans. We have a user-group here with almost 350 members, and for the most part, are perfectly content with posting and chatting within that group.
Ugh, I loathe when someone says "haters,' but that's just me. Also, it's good that your group can chat amongst each other, make your own threads, and do whatever. However, it's also good for a counter-culture to have the same right and to use it how it pleases. I'm glad we agree.
Now. Just a question to your first. I watched two episodes, and I just need to honestly ask. The first episode was basicly one half of a long episode. So would you not have to watch both halves to claim you watched one? Or did I just misunderstand you and you already did.

Watched the 2 pilot episodes in the end, can't say I massively enjoyed it. I can understand why people find it funny, but for cartoons, my personal preference is stuff that has more of an 'adult' target audience, like Metalocalypse, Superjail!, South Park and Family Guy.

Although the one exception of this rule is Invader Zim, but thats purely for the fact I was a Jhonen Vasquez fan since his days making Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and whereas Zim was aired on children morning/daytime slots, it was still pretty messed up for a kids show, you could definitely see it came from the mind of someone who gave us JTHM and Squee.

Really, that's what the whole pony thing is about? My Little Pony?
I wondered what the heck it was. I assumed people were using it ironically as a joke, rather scary to think a large portion of internet geekdom is hooked on MLP...

It takes a certain taste to like it, just like all things.
Superjail looked really goofy but it was funny how brute it was :p
At least there are people who try it before they judge....

I've gotta admit, I must not visit the same sites as you guys, because other than the shitstorm of people asking what the big deal is on this site, I haven't seen a whole lot of pony-related discussion. Maybe I'm too old. Maybe anyone old enough to remember the original cartoon is too old.

You see, I've seen the most incredibly stupid things been pushed into cult status and think about it again what is in current cult status.
Pokemon....
Mario...
All the old stuff of Cartoon network...
Lady gaga....
Ke$ha....
Slipknot....
System of the down...
Every single thing in your list, with the possible exception of the old stuff on cartoon network, achieved mainstream popularity, thereby eliminating them from being "cult" status.
Meeeh. So what, they act like cultists anyway.
But anywho, stop hating the ponies and go back into your corners.

As I see it, your avatar is an extension of yourself; it's what we substitute for a face when we read your post. Even just the act of making that an image of My Little Pony - or any direct culture reference, really - is something that strikes me as odd. It's like saying, "The most important element of my personality is my appreciation of this show/character/game/etc." This seems unreasonable to me.
This struck me as odd.

People have been doing this LONG before My Little Pony was an internet craze, by your logic, the most important thing in James Raynor's personality is Jim Raynor, the most important part of stinkychops personality is the Heavy from TF2.

I'm nearly certain both of these people do not have shrines to Jim Raynor and the Heavy in their room, respectively.

I don't think you know what the term "cult status" means.

i'm just kinda confused by the timing of it. It's just like not long ago My Little Ponies got really big really suddenly. Haven't they been around like forever? or at least since the 80s? i don't have anything against MLP it just confuses me that it got really internet popular really fast...

They've been around since the late 70's, early 80's, and in that time there have been three or four different cartoons meant to shill the toyline. This is the important detail, so remember it.

Previous incarnations of My Little Pony existed ONLY to shill the toyline, so the animation tended to be cheap, the writing inane, and none of the characters had much personality beyond being female (which science recently discovered does not actually count as a personality trait). As such, the only people who ever watched it were little girls who were into substanceless, poorly-made shows; for everyone else, My Little Pony almost singlehandedly made the notion of "television for girls" synonymous with "vapid tripe".

Last year, the newest My Little Pony cartoon came out. Only it turns out that the creative director and executive producer is Lauren Faust, best known for The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. What's more, she hated the original cartoons. This intrigues some nerds, who watch it and discover that Faust has bent over backwards to make the show as unlike previous incarnations as possible, by actually spending money to hire writers and animators (I assume that previous "girl shows" were created by the producer asking his grandma to wipe a bunny on some blank animation cels while she says something fluffy about it) and accounting for the fact that little girls frequently have parents who have to watch these shows WITH them, so you might as well give THEM something to enjoy as well. Cut to today and we're STILL seeing these fucking topics, because people can't use the search bar.

So yes, it's actually a very old franchise, but it got popular recently because something changed.

Isn't it just the smarting thing in the world to post in a thread without reading ANY OF IT first? Look at the top of this page: even if you can somehow type without the magical skill of literacy, videos have sound. What the FUCK is stopping you from getting answers without looking like a stupid ************?
.....uhhh sorry?

Thank you for an actual answer. I don't have TV so i don't know a thiong about the newest MLP cartoon. Also this first time in the forum in months so i haven't seen any of the older threads.
