BioWare's Mass Effect was a blockbuster RPG, selling over one million copies worldwide during the 2007 holiday season. When Electronic Arts purchased BioWare, however, many wondered if the sequel to Mass Effect would remain exclusive to Xbox 360.

Although specific platforms were not mentioned, EA CEO John Riccitiello did mention on the quarterly earnings conference call today that Mass Effect 2 is being planned for release on "multiple platforms" during the fourth quarter of the upcoming fiscal year.

It's certainly possible that multiple platforms simply means Xbox 360 and PC, but Electronic Arts doesn't typically limit its multiplatform releases like that. We now believe that it's highly likely that Mass Effect 2 will launch on the PS3 in addition to the Xbox 360 when it finally hits the market in early 2010.

SWEET! Mass Effect 2 on the PS3! I know EA did not say "PS3" specifically. but it does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Now if only that rumor that Mass Effect 1 was getting ported to the PS3 is true.

I think that the word 'confirmed' in the title is a bit unmerited. it didn't say PS3, as you stated, and I'm going to wait.

I hope they do multiple releases, though I'm a 360 owner. Why not share the fun, and if the PS3 had more titles I cared about, I might own one.

Yeah, 2 people on a screen at once, no dialogues (let's not forget that most of the Wii people are kids or oldies - the first ones can't read, and the others shouldn't start a long game...), no violence (already mentioned, why) and of course, PS1 graphics.

I'm just glad PC is there.

If that actually did come to pass, I think a part of me would die. Like... literally die.... to the point of my taking a shovel and burying that dead part of me in my backyard.

First Dead Rising and now THIS?!?! You monsters!!!

Anyways, Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 would be nice for the people who've only got Sony's console, but considering that things you've done in the first Mass Effect are supposed to affect the second one, it'd be kind of weird for them not to port the first one over beforehand.

EA should make it a double pack. That would kick ass.

I'm sorry for being behind on the times, but WHEN did EA buy BioWare?!
Yeah, when did that happen?
They didn't mention the SNES in that article either, but it said multiple platforms. Oh I'm so confused :D

Good for PS3 if it gets it though. I'm counting the days until Halo get released across all consoles.

To quote the legal stuff on the website:

MASS EFFECT © 2003-2008 EA International (Studio and Publishing) Ltd. Mass Effect, the Mass Effect logo, BioWare, the BioWare logo and the BioWare hands logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks of EA International (Studio and Publishing) Ltd
EA has somthing to do with Mass Effect

I'm guessing 360 + PC. Does it really make sense to release Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 when the first one hasn't even been ported over?

...or has it? A quick Google search says "rumour, rumour, rumour", circa 2007.

Shortly before Mass Effect was released on the 360. Same time they bought Pandemic.

If MS don't have an exclusivity agreement then you can bet your bottom dollar the game will appear on the PS3.

Oh, rriiiiiight. Because the 360 and the PC versions were all ready a forgone conclusion. So multiplatform MUST mean that Mass Effect is coming to the DS or maybe the Phantom. So what else is left. Oh, rriiigght, the PS3. Stupid me.

I am betting all previous arrangements with Bioware and Microsoft went out the window when EA purchased Bioware. EA loves multiplat games.

Oh great. In addition to being another cut-and-paste Bioware storyline with cut-and-pasted Bioware characters who are just DYING to tell me the typical traits that I can expect every single member of their generic alien race to display I get half-assed implementation brought on by an overextended set of programmers trying to write the game for two or more different hardware setups. If I'm REALLY lucky they'll make a whole separate version of the game that I won't care about for outdated consoles and REALLY stretch their dev team!

I really hope that all this means is there's going to be a PC version.

in 2005 Pandemic Studios merged with Bioware in a unique partnership where they became economically 1 identity although each party was able to keep their individual identity.

October 11th 2007, EA Purchased Bioware and Pandemic Studios for 860 Million USD. Deal was finalized January 7th 2008.

EA had absolutely nothing to do with Mass Effect, they just absorbed the company shortly before the game was released and was able to tag their name and legalites on it before it shipped in november. Some, myself included, question if this bodes well for any subsquent titles of Mass Effect given EAs current running record when it comes to series development. Don't keep your hopes up kiddies... it is EA after all.
