Ever-so-slightly off-topic, but somebody needs to stuff Jack Thompson into a sack, cover it in gasoline and light a match. And then throw the sack off a cliff.
But then there's a chance the cliff might end up being over the sea, so the fire would go out.
He'd run out of oxygen sooner or later though, being stuck in a sack.
But wouldn't the sack burn up in the fire? Which would let him escape?
If he did escape, then he'd eventually drown, or hopefully get eaten by a shark.
Oh, you have sharks! That solves it.
...are you going to film it? 'Couse I'd like to see it. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over a...
Umm, I think you guys are going a liiitle off topic here; this thread is about controversial games......not murder......

As for a controversial game that actually deserves the controversy, look no further than Custer's Revenge, and Atari 2600 game about raping Native American women..........I really wish I was kidding..........

The original Postal.

I tried the game only because of the furor. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.117776]

Only after experiencing the rape games out of curiosity, have I ever been as disgusted with a fake event as the time I walked into an elementary school yard and executed sprites depicting young-helpless children as they sobbed for their mommy.

There are 2 kinds of controversial games, those that are not ment to be controversial but some people think they are (Diablo, Wolfestein, Mass Effect, etc) and those that try really hard to be considered controversial (Custer's Revenge, Postal, Manhunt).

I preffer the first kind of game, since they can be good, and there is always people finding something to complain about, so controversy is not an issue. The games that try to be controversial just for the sake of it are usually pretty bad and use violence and sex as a gimmick to sell. Not that I get offended by it or something, but I don't see the point of playing something just so I could see pixel blood.

And who can forget Thrill Kill (PSX), a 4 player fighting game set in Hell. It featured BSDM, alot of brutality and sexually laden moves. The announcement of the game created such a shitstorm that EA pulled back from publishing it. Deservingly, imo. Ofcourse, I played it anyway. Increased demand ensured it still reached greedy hands via bootleg releases.

Ahh, yes. Carmegeddon. Remember it receiving alot of flak. In Germany they replaced the pedestrians with zombies and implemented green blood. Game was hella fun. Just no way you could justify the violence though.

Am I the only one who's noticed that a bunch of gamers plotting to murder Jack Thompson is in fact validating his point about the negative effects of violent games?

It's really only validating the negative effects of being a total batshit insane moron, to a large majority of the world populations.

I've never found any game to be controvesial... not even rapelay, it's true that it's not a very pleasant game but still. and in all honesty, no matter what the game there will always be someone whos found something wrong with it. I once read a forum post saying that the Super Mario games should be banned because they were to voilent (no the guy wasnt being sarcastic). I usually laugh at people like that, but the fact was that he was deadly serious...

/agree

Even though the premise is stalking and "raping", the game is still done in the manga/anime art style. I can ASSURE you that there are published manga and anime that are much much worse than RapeLay.

For some reason people seem to think that adding "interactivity" to media suddenly makes it so much more serious. Books, Music, Movies, even traditional art all have subject matter and visuals that would put even the most controversial games to shame.

Hm.
Hitman and Manhut? Nah.. yes, the concepts sound a bit off to some people (killing for money/killing for other reasons) especially since since there's none of that light-heartedness like in GTA: Vice City but still.. no. I'd guess 95% of all games touch somewhat questionable topics, albeit sometimes only exessive cartoonish violence. That doesn't justifiy controversy, in my book, because unless it goes into the wrong hands (like once in 100.000 cases or whatever Oo) nothing happens. its just cool.

Unless someone creates a sim game based on Auschwitz were you get rewards the more effecively you commit genocide.. thats probably gonna be controversial. And tasteless. And probably poorly coded as well cos no one wants to publish that ^^

eDit concerning japanese games:
only controversial over here. they've got worse. i daresay most people here have seen that at some point. you can't compare.
