Have you tried Nethack?

Very few stats, very limited skill point assignment (basically just improving abilities with various weapons), and it's more about using the resources at hand to solve the problems at hand than min-maxing your way through. (At least in the early stages, before you spoiler yourself too much)

That game is also notoriously difficult and unfair... I can't last ten minutes.

I guess I didn't word my first statement well. It's not just people I play with that are unimpressed with me. I've found "Easy" games seriously hard, and I'm positive some of it is actually because of my decisions. Maybe I just think differently from everyone else, but a stat build in a game that I thought was pretty solid has, more than once, made it a LOT harder. It can't be ALL others' fault. I'm seriously bad when it comes to RPG elements, even in simple games like Pokemon.
If you have doubts, you can try that build and see the differences in comparison with your own build. There are always optimal builds in RPGs, both multiplayer and single-player, it's just a matter if you give a crap or not. Also, Pokemon is not as simple as you think it is unless you know how to do proper EV spreads and damage calculations.

It's not about beating the game so much as about playing it. I have tons of fun in my myriad failed attempts (mostly with a valkyrie as those are the easiest of the classes) trying to reach Gehennom, making my way through Sokoban legally, or attempting to complete the Valkyrie class quest. And if I die? The levels are fresh, the enemies are fresh, level 1 is as fun as level 20, and there are new item types to search for.

It is fair, though, almost completely. The only truly random deaths I can think of are poisoned spiked pits and unidentified cockatrice eggs. Pretty much everything else can be prepared for.

It seems to me like you've already made up your mind on the matter, so no point in asking others to change it. Not everyone has the same tastes.

To the Pokemon thing, I've seen 8-year-olds that have beaten the Elite Four. I'm 16, and the farthest I've gotten in a Pokemon game is the sixth gym. There's something wrong here.

Play a BioWare RPG. If you still don't like RPGs after that then I'm afraid you may be a lost cause T_T

Care to tell what you're using and which game? I mean, one of the easiest ways to beat the pokemon games was to only train up your starter so it would be fairly overleveled than it should be, even if they are facing against a gym that has type advantage, though I never found this method to be quite as fun or challenging.

So do a little research before you play on character building for that particular game. Don't get nuts over it though. And like Neverhoodian and i said before, play a good single player/story driven rpg, stay away from the pvp/mmo type stuff.
I'm not touching another MMO, at least for a while. Well, maybe an MMOFPS or something. I mean, what can you screw up in an FPS? Mouse sensitivity? Haha!

It just seems like the ones you've played are the problems. Play an RPG like The Elder Scrolls or a BioWare title. These ones are less about using the "correct" build and more about playing how you want. Especially Elder Scrolls.

Some people like the meta game involved with character builds I don't. That's why I don't usually play MMOs and when I do, it's not PvP.

Stick to the games you like, and be happy. Only worry about it if you are dealing with a multiplayer game, cuz what you picked and what you do effect other players. If however you like single player RPGs most of the time you can still beat one with a gimped build, so play away!

If you're playing a single player RPG, I don't believe there is any "wrong way" to build your character. There's certainly a build that "makes things the easiest" but there's always going to be that build.

When it comes to MMO's such as WoW there is indeed a "best build" that runs standard as to making your character perform at its optimum. That's because it's all a numbers game. Punch in enough numbers into the formulas and eventually you'll come up with the best and fastest route from point A to point B.

Mathematically speaking there's always going to be a "best build", especially in online games where you've got nerds crunching numbers day an night to out frag their competition.(trust me I've been that nerd) When it comes to a single player game like Deus Ex, tell them to piss off if they don't like how you're playing the game.

Yea....you're right. That is one thing about RPG's that has always just pissed me off. I wanted to play through Dragon Age as a shape shifting mage, because god dammit I wanna kill stuff as a bear! Apparently, this is a great way to get yourself killed, and any mage not playing as an Arcane Warrior is doomed to seeing the reload screen after every encounter.

My advice? Do whatever the hell you want, and just set the difficulty on easy when you begin getting pissed off. If you aren't having fun with a game, there's no reason to play it. And, ofcourse, just stay the hell away from MMO's.

I don't get it. Can't you just tell these people to piss off?

Or "no thank you" if they're your friends.

Your overthinking it. If you enjoy the game , play it and have fun. I would stay away from the competitive online crap though if i were you. Play a story driven rpg like the Baldurs Gates or Planescape:Torment. Get lost in these worlds without interference from online trash.

Fuck what those mmo turds have to say !!
This most MMO's are full of people obessed with stats and digits they forget its a game desgined for fun screw them enjoy your self as thats what games are made for.

Yes, because anyone that wants to win and play competitively automatically forget how to play for fun. Are you really going to generalize on people that want to make optimal builds?

You should really take a look at Fallout:NV, while there are certainly some builds that work better than others, absolutely anything, even unarmed or a Charisma based character, can be deadly with the right perks.

I have the same problem with certain RPGs, I had to restart Morrowind, Diablo 2 and The Witcher pretty far in because my skill builds were crap. The best advice I can give you is to either not worry about it and enjoy the game until you hit a wall or when you start to notice a game has a lot of skill choices research them online before you make up your mind. Honestly I don't regret having to restart any of those games, they're all worth a second play through.
