If you've stopped having fun man, stop doing it.
If not, then keep it up.

By and large I've never gotten how someone else disliking a game you enjoy somehow hinders your enjoyment.

A threefold answer:

1) Whoah, dude. Drama queen much?
This was tongue in cheek. Kind of. Gaming should be fun, good times and stuff. No need for it to feel like commitment. If you're not the mood, do something else that gives you pleasure, fun, good times. Simple as that. (an advice given from a rocking chair)

2) From briefly skipping through the thread so far, maybe it IS about time to escape the confinements of console gaming. By which I mean opening ways to be more (oh, the forbidden word! Fuck off!) "casual" about your gaming habits. I'm not a PC gamer by choice, just by fact - but I somewhat have a feeling that "we" get to have more titles that come with a natural teflon-coating to all those annoying topics being endlessly discussed. I myself am quite fed up with the current state of TripleA titles - but I just don't have to play them. In fact, I haven't played an AAA since... December[footnote]for the sake of sincereness: not counting about 7 rounds of Battlefield[/footnote]

3) and probably the most important:

For the past six weeks I've been exclusively playing one game. A highly praised game by both critics and players - there hasn't been one single mention of this game... at all. So, maybe you indeed should stay clear off this world that isn't interested in FUN, but instead just wants to voice opinions aka pettily complain about supposedly shit.

There are plenty of places on the Escapist to discuss fun, but many of them aren't immediately apparent to those who don't spend a lot of time here. User groups are a great safe-haven for this.

No.

This is the same response I give to ANY "convince me to ___" thread. No. I am not required to justify your personal melodrama.

If you're done, good for you. People change. Such is life. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

And, if you ever change your mind, you are welcome to come back.

It is just that simple. Game if you want to - don't if you don't. No reason to make a thread about it.

I'll be perfectly honest, I was tempted to say good riddance, but me having a bad day is no reason to lash out at someone else, especially when I know nothing about them. I apologise for even thinking it.

Now, I want to boil down some of your issues, see where we can go from there then:

"Tired of games sacrificing gameplay for pretentious meta-narrative bullshit, tired of unentertaining seriousness, tired of AAA treating me as a wallet on legs, tired of DLC being little more than stuff that should be part of the main game, tired of games lasting barely longer than 7-8 hours and being charged sixty bucks for it"

I'm guessing Infinite struck a nerve. I must admit, I was a little disappointed as it didn't feel like a Shock game. Campsters video on it sort of forwarded some of my issues with it. However, I still think it was one of the better, straight up FPSs in recent years. Questionable design decisions aside, the Vigors-cum-Shooting mechanic holds up really well on its own, without the environmental tinkering that you would expect in traditional shock games. Not to mention Elizabeth, by sheer functionality, is one of the best npcs in gaming to date. A little too much of the game was bended around her presence and it becomes notable, but its a step up from the ashleys and yordas of gamings past.

Your point on DLC (and by extension, other shitty practices like always on and online passes), while holding merits, isn't an industry wide problem (yet). Ubisoft EA, Capcom and Acitvision (and a few others) are the only companies that seem to be pushing that shitty practice. Bethesda (as a publisher) still have quality in mind (mileage may vary), with giving 2 beefy DLCs to Skyrim as well as one excellent (and relatively cheap) campaign in Dishonoured. The DLC market appears to be struggling as more and more people feel they are been cheated for more cash. This will change soon enough.

DLC, really, hasn't caught on as much outside of the few biggest companies. The vast majority of DLC out there are cosmetic, adding nothing substantial content wise.

Yeah, AAA games aren't earning their costs. This isn't something new. Much is being debated over AAA pricing. Its not just our resident Jimquisition cursing to the winds on this.

"Tired of consoles filling themselves with junk, tired of constant firmware updates, or game update, of constant patches because the devs couldn't be arsed to test before shipping and are treating us, the consumer, as unpaid beta-testers."

As distinct from what? Firmware is necessary with online connectivity, for both security and functionality. If they update their networks, the Playstations/Xboxs at home will need to follow suit, or othewise run into compatibility issues down the road.

Games were never in the stable state that people seemed to fondly recollect. Most people remember games from a time where they were A): too young to comprehend and distinguish a broken game from a hard one (a lot of fond memories with nes titles, yet only a handful of them really stand the test of time, as the rest are just riddled with issues)... or B): Bought gold editions of games that had the latest versions installed.

Does nobody else remember broken games of yesteryear? They weren't fewer, we just had lower standards... we attributed glitches and exploits as part of the game, not as a flaw. If a certain boss was just insanely hard, it was part of the games charm/challenge, rather then being a fight that slipped through playtesters and published as an imbalanced mess.

"And if the new rumors about the next generation have a shred of truth to them, it's just going to get worse."

So far the only rumours that have been circulating are related to the durango (or whatever its called now). Speculations are there that Sony will drop a bombshell but we haven't had any media coverage to lend credence to that (To my knowledge). Not to mention the next console wave will also have the Steambox to contend with (and the piston, but I don't know shit about it), so there may be more to the next gen then what we had this gen.

Anyway, I'm not going to try and convince you to stay. The idea is silly. Games are a completely superfluous experience in life, and in no way essential for a happy or fulfilling one. Also, you won't so much go as stop spending money on AAA games, wherein your problem lies.

I suggest you lower your standards (not in terms of quality, but production costs) and look to other avenues rather then AAA. It's actually not as big a sacrifice to simply turn blind to AAA titles (or at least, AAA bloated marketing titles). Dive into some comfort gaming (personal favourites) for a few months. It's how I get around dry spells and mediocrity. By then more will be known about the future of gaming and you can reassess then.

GOG might be a good place to start, but steam also has a good library of classic games.

TL;DR
I'd have read your post if you'd have titled it different. "Do you think there is an age limit on gaming?" "Am I too old for this?"
But I can't be doing with these attention grabbing titles, reminds me of Fox News

No.

Stop being a baby and just do what you want to do--but don't make a big showy deal of it, we don't care WHAT you do.

Grow up <--that is my advice.

You can either stop for a few months, what I do sometimes is randomly purchase a game that I would have completely overlooked or just play an old game for a while. I have been/will be using forum less and less myself.

Doing sometime is better than stalling.

Start playing roguelikes. Play nothing but roguelikes for a while. They can be served up in bite-sized chunks of time so you've plenty of time to pursue other things, but are still fun. If you never come back to srs bsnss gaming, at least you're playing roguelikes. You can start easy with friendly ui stuff like FTL or just go balls deep into ascii-land with nethack or dwarf fortress. Though I do think some of the ascii games have tilesets you can use.

You know something I noticed in your post, you didn't actually mention being bored of games. I reckon you still have a genuine love and affection for gaming and it's power to make you laugh/cry/rage/love/delight/scare and any other emotion you can feel what it sounds like you're angry at is the baggage.

Perhaps not the baggage, but the greater gaming community which seems all too often to *****,moan.whine and do the wrong things because that what people like talking about. It's the same as watching the news too much and starting to think the world will end.

I suggest you take a break from that side of gaming, don't click the links that lead to shitty inflamatory articles designed to make your blood boil. Instead just choose a lovely little game and if you liked it make a thread about it on here :)

At least, thats what I did about a year ago when I got sick of gaming for a while. Realised it wasn't 'gaming' but this extended baggage so I took a break (this website included) for a while and just played the games that looked fun-not reading up about every little feature that might have been, is out on the other console etc.

I'm back here now, but I tend to stir clear of the more moany sounding threads.

Erm, hope that helps?
I... I might have to do this with ponies, now that you mention this. Yes, I know how off topic this is, but I've had a similar thing happen with those equines and have been in quite the slump for a very long time now, to the point where I've rarely watch the show itself for quite some time and always feel pissed about all the muck-ups of S2 and S3 as well as all the Derpygate-level bullshit (though I'm still not found of Twilicorn). Maybe a good break from the community is in order, and I might just need to binge out on the show itself as well as some fun games of mine (been playing a load of Killing Floor lately, and I do want to finish Super Meat Boy and Katawa Shoujo). Playing Turok 1 or 2 yet again as well as maybe BattleTanx: Global Assault or Tony Hawk 3 might be fun as well.

On topic time:

You don't like console gaming. So switch to the pc! Ofcourse you dislike gaming if you are looking for quality games on consoles. You have to see the other side of the coin untill you dismiss the entire hobby.
And that's an entire bag of cats by itself.
PC's cost wayyyy more that I care for, and instead of firmware update and junk data, I get viruses and esoteric system requirments.

Although, maybe I just have leftover burned feelings after constantly having to pass over games because my computer was short a hundred dollar upgrade.
My laptop I got on clearance for $600 (normally $780) over a year ago, and it runs just most games fine on low to mid settings with a resolution of 1280x720 (basically 720p iirc). I'm sure you could find or even build a far better desktop than this measly laptop for less than that, and have a whole new gaming library of colossal proportions that spans decades open to you. The one thing I will recommend for PC gamers who like shooters is to get a decent mouse though, as your typical 800 dpi mouse really does feel choppy, but even those are about the price of a PS3 or 360 controller. Simply put, the price of PC gaming vs consoles isn't as extreme as you'd be led to believe.

As for the virus thing, just be careful about what sites you visit or emails you open and ask around about decent yet free antivirus programs. This is definitely a site that can help you with that.

Now about your OP - I'd say that there are two factors at play here: A) You're tired of the serious gaming debates and controversies that perpetuate the Interwebz and B) You're tired of the AAA market in it's entirety.

First off, I'd recommend that you avoid any and all gaming threads that even look like they might be serious or flame-bound. Joke threads are aplenty here (Just ask Spidermod about her wrestling victory :p), and you can find threads that discuss things other than gaming or that simply aren't taking gaming too seriously. You can also make threads or even a group dedicated whatever it is you actually feel like discussing or not discussing, whatever they may be. Lastly, it may be sites like this that you need to avoid or take a break from, rather than gaming itself, if it's really people's bullshit that's bothering you so.

Next up, you'll for the most part want to avoid the modern AAA market. Buying an old system and playing some classic games might help cheer you up a bit, especially if they're games you missed out on the first time around. There's also the indie scene, which does have entirely gameplay focused games like Minecraft (obvious), Don't Starve, Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy (phenominal if you like old school platformers), Fat Princess; the list goes on. You can even find *le gasp!* pure horror games such as Amnesia here. Granted, there are a LOT of bad indie titles out there, but they're much cheaper anyways (far less of a risk) and you could always ask around about any title you have some interest in.

This also ties back into the PC thing mentioned earlier, as mods and freeware are virtually exclusive to PC, which can give you radically different games to play (DayZ, Counterstrike, and Killing Floor were all mods originally; and the original Slender, the SCP games, and Katawa Shoujo are all popular freeware). The indie scene is also FAR bigger on PC, as well as PC having the best backwards compatibility of any system out there bar none. The consoles do have an indie scene too, however; so you're not completely out of luck if you want to stick with your console. Either way, give the indie a shot; though look up on it first to make sure it isn't a no-gameplay Journey-style game (I've only played Journey's demo, before anyone asks; but I'm pretty sure it isn't the gameplay that people like so much about it).

TL;DR - Read the wall o' text already. I didn't type all of that for nothing, ya know.

Whelp, I think it's time to throw in the towel.

It's time to end this nonsense and just give up on gaming.

Maybe I've just gotten too old (I'm twenty, so that's right out), or maybe too busy, or maybe I'm just tired of videogames.

All of them. All of it. Tired of the extremists. Tired of the 2deep4u pseudo-intellectuals. Tired of everything being teh sexist/racist.

I'm tired of the constant calls to be taken seriously. Taken seriously by whom exactly?

Tired of games sacrificing gameplay for pretentious meta-narrative bullshit, tired of unentertaining seriousness, tired of AAA treating me as a wallet on legs, tired of DLC being little more than stuff that should be part of the main game, tired of games lasting barely longer than 7-8 hours and being charged sixty bucks for it.

And if the new rumors about the next generation have a shred of truth to them, it's just going to get worse.

But I don't want to leave the gameing scene. This is the one hobby I've really enjoyed, and I've been doing it since was six years old. I have fond memories of playing Tachyon when I was eight, of Starlancer when I was ten, of Ratchet and Clank when I was twelve. I remember the day I bought my 360 with my own money, how happy I was to finally be part of scene.

So convince me to stay escapists; give me one/three good reasons why I should stay in the gameing scene.

Hell, list all the reasons I should stay, or give me a few more why I shouldn't. Discuss among yourselves whether should you stay or should you go.
2 things:

1. You have a computer. Play some indie games and ignore the AAA scene for a while. It is refreshing and quite cheap.
or
2. Don't play games for a while. Do something else for several months to a year and then come back. You might not be so weary of gaming after a break.

lol. Im 36 and im just becoming bored of gaming. Not all games, just that the kind of games i want to play are not many. But then, like music and films, we all have certain types we enjoy over others. Just play what you enjoy and dont play what you hate. Its common sense and nothing to do with anyone apart from your self. Not sure why you made a thread for this as only you know what you like to play.

Sorry for the double-post, but you made me do this (yes, at gunpoint with a pack of scissors) -

Seriously though, I agree that we need more silly and fun in these threads. Maybe we need a forum added that is specifically dedicated to silly threads yet doesn't require discussion value or the whole thread to be one giant game. We really could use a bigger emphasis on fun here, rather than trying to have serious discussions all the time.

It's a hobby that enjoy participating in, don't let a bunch of annoying wankers on the internet take that away from you.
You're only too old to play vidjagames when you've got arthritis so bad you can't hold the mouse\controller anymore.

If you needed to be convinced to stay AND pay 60 dollars a pop per title, I think you should be moving on. If you find out you can't live without your game fix a little down the line... Well, it's not like the game industry's going to disappear overnight.

Don't ask people to convince you to do anything. That just sounds so... hm. Whiny. Sorry.

I'm almost 67, and NO WAY would I give up gaming...Anyone remember Atari 400 w/ membrane keyboard? Well, that was my gaming start.
Now?
My games take me to worlds that never were, and for times that will never be matched. I can walk in the shoes of giants, or inhabit the body of a rat.
Zip along skylines, or ooze in a primordial soup.
My advice? Lighten up, and enjoy the new worlds you are lucky enough to see and experience.
