Not nearly enough Lovecraft in this thread.

The Mi-go will put your brain in a jar and take you to Pluto.
The Great Race of Yith will body-swap with you to learn about your culture.
The people of K'n-yan will torture you in horrible ways and reanimate your corpse as a deathless slave.
And the Shoggoths will nom you.

Zerg, indefinitely. FOR THE SWAAAAARM!
Tryanids, the far cooler version of zerg. FOR THE OVERMIND!!!

That or the Combine. I'd join.
Pfft, Tyranids, are just a rip off of the zerg. It was my first thought when I saw them (mainly HUNDREDS of them). Zerg came first, zerg are cooler, zerg are evolved, some can fly :D, but most of all, ZERG ARE INFINITE. The only other candidates are Predators, Xenomorphs or Protoss.

I would say Quarians, but do they even qualify? They are basically as close to humans as you can get mentally, and their social structure is what humans would use where we screwed over by our own creations... so.. well I don't really know. Not enough into sifi to know that many.

Tyranids appeared first in the "Rogue Trader" edition of Warhammer 40k, what was the first corebook and was released 1987. Starcraft and the Zerg were released 1999.

- Tyranids are the epitome of "evolved", they devour entire races and adapt their DNA to their genpool to create new mutations, literally on the fly to their next meal. The Carnifex, that inspired the Ultralisk, was created when the Tyranids got their claws on the dna of a Spacemarine Terminator.

- Gargoyles, a Tyranid unit, is very well able to fly, as are several other units that can adapt wings when needed. Lyctors for xample can "fly", or more hover decent heights using Psy-Powers.

- Tyranids are infinite by default. While the fleet is busy devourering a world, literally at the same time a whole new generation of a bigger number is hatching on the swarm-fleet.

You're welcome.

Many good ones have been mentioned already, so I am just going to mention a species I can think of at the moment.

Bismollians. That is an obscure reference to the Legion of Super Heroes fyi.

How can you not love a species with Judicial Mud Wrestling? Though admittedly, that has a lot more to do with the awesomeness of Tenzil Kem.

My favorite is also a Mass Effect race, like many of the postings here. I think that's because ME allows the player to interact with the aliens around them and talk to them and learn about them. Not just kill them like in most video games.

OT: Turians. Fingers crossed that we get to go to Palavin in ME3. And see Turian women.

Edit: Or the Dark Eldar from Warhammer 40K. Love them bastards

Wait, the title is called "Coolest Fictional Alien Race?". I didn't know there were any non-fictional alien races.

OT: THE KROGAN! Heck yeah!

And ALL of the above come from the "Alien" aliens.

Can't I just say WH40K and be done with it?

You like orcs? They come with guns and tanks in WH40K.

How about Eldar? Elves with lasers & spaceships.

The Tyranids are like the Zerg taken up to 11.

The Tau, the Necrons, the Dark Eldar; in WH40K, even the humans are interesting.

Everything in the WH40K universe is saturated with awesome.
