There's a terrible habit among (sorry in advance for stereotyping) older generations who seem to believe anything they don't understand must inherently have some form of evil attached to it.

It's not good enough that you like some crazy cartoon stuff he doesn't 'get', so he's gotta find some way to turn into some perverted freakshow thing.

Same reason you find metal/horror movies/comic books/video games blamed for so much, those who don't understand and don't want to do any work to find out, find it far easier to blame and hate than learn.

We've just got to accept it smugly realise they'll all die before us and maybe in 20 years or so we'll have gamers running the country and the TV networks.

At least according to my dad. I thought he was just one of those people that thought "cartoons are for children" and that anime/animation couldn't possibly be mature and should only be aimed at children. When I asked him why he didn't like anime, he gave a bunch of nonsensical reasons (it's not realistic, it's "lame", the characters make weird faces etc. I'm sure you've heard these all before), then he said that people dress up as the characters and have sex with old men for money. Seriously, what the fuck? I tried explaining it to him, and he refused to listen, and he was being completely serious. How am I supposed to talk to someone like that? I've liked anime pretty much all my life, and his utter rejection of it has always been infinitely frustrating, but I had no idea he thought like this.
Actually in Japan it's not unheard of for teenaged girls to have sex with strangers for money or gadgets. Not saying it happens a lot, but the fact that it does allegedly was a cause for concern for japan's health ministry and therefor made the circuit on the conservative prattle shows. He might have gotten his signals crossed on that one.

As for the rest, it sounds like he's just ignorant. Probably can't be helped by talking. It's hard to convince anyone of anything with words. You usually have to help them realize it for themselves. So I wouldn't expect him to change unless he finds something he likes on his own. I used to hear from my sister in law that Japanese cartoons were all pornography. So without my knowing my parents (who while in their 60's loved "Berserk" which they just picked up off our dvd rack and started watching on their own) loaned my berserk collection to my older brother. He and his whole family loved it. And I never had to hear any shit about "japanese cartoons" again, only praise for berserk and the continual question if there's anything else like it to this day.

So long story short, you dad is very confused. If you know what he likes, use your BRAIN (no offense intended but the caps are for emphasis, you're going to have to be smart about this) to pick a show, ask him to try it and hope that he likes it. Don't pick a show where people get punched into the moon or where crazy Japanese humor breaks out every few minutes. In short the big three are ruled out, outright. As is anything involving magical girls, any show where the characters look like precious moments figurines, or the typical High school Heroes stuff. Seriously, if children are piloting mecha or there's a harem involved you know what not to show your dad.

And above all else, be prepared, he may not like it even if he does give it an honest chance (which isn't likely). It's not the end of the world if you and your dad like different things. I'd personally show an older person something like berserk or ghost in the shell, or maybe the magnetic rose segment from memories. But there's pitfalls there too. The 100 man battle stretches believability, memories is not dubbed and ghost in the shell has a lot of talking. People will criticize these criticisms but people are fickle and will fault find if they feel threatened. Old people especially. Really, you'd know your dad best, good luck.

You're not. Your father is having his biases and so do you. Leave him be.

It doesn't sounds like he is restricting you in any way, so why bother him about it? You're just forcing yourself on the guy, talk about something else.

Obviously he's been watching/reading Japanese porn on the internet.

Seriously, the only time that ever happens is in porn.

In real life, cosplayers don't have sex with old men - they have sex with other cosplayers. And not for money either - just for fun. What happens at Otakon stays at Otakon.
Well from looking at these pics, Id say that be an interesting experience.

As the monster in my closet says...

Ignorance Is Bliss.

My father actually likes anime. He will watch One Piece or Naruto now and again when I have the DVDs running.
He knows that it's Japanese and he accepts that.

^^;; Those aren't exactly typical cosplayers. I usually like to wear a slightly less revealing outfit when I cosplay. If only because Air Conditioning is a *****. Try looking at the Gen Con 2011 Cosplay gallery below for a better idea of what's more realistic (and ignore the "booth *****" - she is pretty much what you were picturing previously).

This is probably the best way I've heard anyone describe it.

/RAGESCREAM!
Okay, I am not forcing myself on him. If he so much as sees a screenshot or cover of an anime, or anything with animated (especially with eastern art direction) while I'm... say browsing Netflix, he completely flips his shit. I have not tried to convert him, I just think that if I'm going to sit there, or even leave the room without saying anything while he watches Ancient Aliens, I should be able to watch Fullmetal Alchemist every once in a while.

I never really have. Like pokemon games, hated the show, yu gi oh cards, hated the show. That style bugs me, sorry.
I've seen countless anime, and Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon are abomination in every way. I seriously hope those shows aren't what your view on anime is, because it's NOTHING like that. And the art style? Constantly changes. There are many shows where people are designed to look like real people. It's an entire artistic medium and it doesn't deserve the narrow minded view people give it.

Nah Im not into booth babes; most of them look too slutty for my tastes.

And I dont like typical cosplay(Im guessing that is what you meant with just seeing everyday cosplay at a convention) where most of time they dont look like theyre character and the costume is very cheap :/

More interested in professional cosplay just cuz I like to admire at how much time they put into looking like the character in question.

BUT its not an entire artistic medium. Comic books are in a similar style, and I like that style. The style changes, sure, but not by a whole lot, and no those aren't my only view. Ghost in a Shell is another one people never seem to shut up about, and I dreaded it. I mean, we can play this game, but I don't like anime, no matter how you dice it. Its animation, like cartoons, not an entire artistic medium, its like saying you don't like rap music. Its a section of a medium I just don't care for.

A friend of mine commissioned me to make BIBLE BLACK COSPLAY OUTFITS for her and three of her friends last halloween. After accepting the job she fucked me and upon completion and after she paid me for my work she did it again.

So yeah... I'm not some dirty old man but OPs dad has a point.

I was able to convince my dad that animation is not a worthless medium besides pixar with one sentence. "Mark Hamill has been the Joker since the early 90's, and most of his best work acting wise was done as a voice actor."

I know he hates anything remotely cartoon related(unless CG I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY) but it just got so frustrating having him immediately dismiss things out of hand that I knew were right up his alley story and content wise.

Show your dad Neon Genesis Evangelion. That'll change his tune. (Or Black Lagoon if you want the least anime-like anime ever)

I think your dad is thinking of furries more than anything *cringe* Now I've cos-played before for Tekkoshocon and plan on doing it just for fun with a couple friends soon and I don't see how dressing up as anime characters correlates with being a prostitute... in any sense.
