And who do you think it would be?

Back after the initial Atari-era video game crash, when Nintendo and Sega managed to revitalize the market with their competition, Sony comes along and BAM, knocks Sega out of the race entirely.

Then, here comes Microsoft with their beastly black box and now, we got a three way race.

Is there any room for a new company to successfully launch a console? If you think so, what company would have the resources or even the inclination to do so?

I'd have to put my vote in for Google or Apple. They've got the ability to do it, and the name recognition to have a strong presence in the market if they could impress gamers with their initial outings.

Apple
EA (Well they have the money but I spose it would be known as the DRM Machine LOL)
Intel (Since they do make cpu's and GPU's)
AMD (Since they do make cpu's and GPU's)

Well I don't see AMD or Intel creating a console of their own since it's their technology that powers all of the current consoles anyway. Apple I think is happy sticking with iPods and iPhones as gaming devices. Google might be the one possibility, but I really don't see any new-branded console hardware entering the race in the next ten years. There's just too much money wrapped up in it. Design, production, online services, marketing, and not to mention having to bribe developers for exclusives.
True I was thinking more based on money and abilitys, to be honest id love to see Sega back in the running (I Have a soft spot for sega no matter how many times they kick me in the teeth with sonic games since the dreamcast minus Sonic and Sega racing)

I'd kinda like to see what Sony would do if one of it's rival electronics companies, like Samsung or Panasonic, decided to give it a whirl.

The system is pretty stable as it is, if another console entered the market it would probably make Sony and Microsoft call a truce and gang up on them, unless they went for the Wii category in which case it'd get its ass handed to it. The only chance would be to find a new niche market, maybe a simulator console, but I doubt it.

Hmmm, that was my line of thinking, until I remembered how Playstation nudged both Nintendo and Sega out of the spotlight for a nice long time. And then how huge (both fuguratively and literally) the XBox was for Microsoft, even in a market that already had The Dreamcast, the PS2 and the Gamecube.

I think it can be done if the right focus is put onto it by whichever company is brave enough to test the waters.

Nope.

We have more than enough consoles as it is. Plus, if we had another one, PC gamers might cry about being left out even more.

I think you have to ask the question "Are you prepared to pay for another console" I have an Xbox and a PS3, as a gamer, I don't want to shell out any more money for another box to go under my TV.

I dont think that you can create another one of the little more serious consoles (like PS# or XBOX360) but if you could come up with a new kind of fun "special" controller or (something like that) you just might be able to replace the WII.

But even that would be incredibly hard unless you have characters
as well known as the Mario Bros

Erm, considering what Google is doing with operating systems, I'm not so sure I want Google to try a console. They'll probably try to rely too much on the internet for that too. Just what we need, a way we can play Farmville on a console and not actually own the game! That's where I a Google console attempt going; something like that downloadable game box for your TV I saw that was announced a while back. I don't like that idea either. I want to actually own the games I play, whether it be a digital or hard copy.

Personally i think an Apple console wouldn't really take off. Their iPod/Phone stuff works great because it was a penetrable market but i think that with the current strength of the big 3 and Apple's track record of pricing shitetonnes of people out of their market (i'd actually give a Mac a go if i could get reasonable specs for what i'd pay for a ordinary machine) would no doubt put a lot of people off.

It really hacks me off that Apple claims to be a company that tackles a monopoly but then goes and adopts a policy of 'the only software you can use is stuff that we explicitly allow', hardly being customer friendly there eh?

Anyway rant over

this isnt really right on topic but anyway:
i say why dont the currents 3 just pool themselves together? it would be a mess at first but if everything was worked out then they could be unbeatable in the games market, everyone would be too scared to try anything. but then again it could also crash the entire market, its risky but you cant say you wouldnt be at least curious about the outcome (good or bad...)

No nobody is going to try entering the console market when two of the three main players aren't even making money from their gaming divisions.
The money, time, and competition involved in this market is too great for the poor reward and low chance of success.

As a PC gamer another console would just mean a load more exclusives to steal that end up looking better and running faster.
