I know certain aircrafts and automobiles have huds but do you think there could be glasses or contacts that displays information? Do these exist right now?

Pretty sure there is something like HUDs in the military but nothing crazy like you see in sci fi games/movies. Pilots and drivers need to have perfect vision and be aware of their surroundings at all time.
IIRC, swimmers can get things that stick on top of their goggles that display information to they.
IMHO, the most important feature of a HUD by far is the ability to get rid of the thing in a hurry when it gets in the way.

Seeing as the civilian market is working on something like that, I'm guessing that at least a few of the world militaries (U.S.A., U.K. and Japan specifically) have some form of HUD glasses/goggles for individual soldiers and have had that tech for a good number of years now.Karma168 said:

Hopefully google glasses will bring it into the mainstream, but at the minute the main thing holding HUDs back is their battery life will be similar to modern smartphones.
Our best bet is to hope that Apple make something, and therefore make it trendy enough for everyone to invest in research.

I don't know how practical it would be, but I think it would be awesome to have a HUD.

Of course, the big barrier to any type of HUD isn't what's possible, but what's convenient. Trust me, I wore glasses from 9 to 25 years of age, and then underwent laser eye surgery. Now I have 15/20 vision, and the only reason I put on glasses again is if it's sunny and the glasses are sunglasses.
It's a hassle. It's something extra on your face, and unless you wear them all the time, it's just another thing to lose in your daily grind. So, while there's always a group of people willing to buy-in to the latest and greatest tech, if it's adding to your daily stress it's not going to happen.
What I can see working is the current progression of cell phones into basically miniature tablets. There's plenty of room to grow in interface and communication possibilities, and it fits into a current niche. Another one might be something like a projector-watch that uses a miniature light source to draw the interface on any surface you want. That avenue actually reduces the amount of stuff you have to carry while preserving functions (with the possible exclusion of the camera function).
As long as they don't shove advertisements into them, I'd say it's possible. You can't even deny that someone would try HUD advertising.

I think that's what the Google Glass thing is...or is it Microsoft Glass...? Anyway, as far as I know the only glasses-based HUDS are sold primarily as ski accessories which I guess would make sense to keep from getting lost on a mountain or whatnot.Professor James said:

I see a mini-map as either being too far in one's peripheral vision to really be useful or, too far in and thus obscuring your view of what's in front of you. It would be a cool idea though, I can't deny that, especially once one's overall wellness can be expressed numerically so as to implement an HP bar.
I disagree and say it's a horrible idea. There are a million reasons why, one of them being the inevitable skyrocketing death tolls via manslaughter because people will be to busy watching porn and cat videos on their glasses rather than actually paying attention to the road.Karma168 said:

Also, the Halo novels make the game's HUD canon. I guess if you had a sensor on the muzzle, it could work. It might be too fussy, or just take getting used to. The ammo counter would certainly be helpful in high octane situations.
