FF VII cost them over $30 million the first time around;
yes but that is making it from scratch.all they really need to do is re model and re texture every thing they have already done.that cant be that hard.i do not think that a company as big as square needs crowd funding to remake an old game.

Now you say that but think how shit the sprites are from FF7. They almost look like playmobile and the environments were pretty crap too.

No I do not think you should give any money to square just yet cos they will just keep it and make some bullshit which will only be released in Japan.
NO definitely NO. But if we could convince them via messages a beautiful remake of ff7 is a good idea (which it is) and they show interest, then it would be a good idea, to break out our wallets. Not that they need our cash to do it mind you.

I can see it now Final Fantasy VII hd remake (with crisis core added on at the start so people actually understand wtf is going on)

WHO'S WITH MMEEEEEEHHH.....

While reading another topic on here about the FFX HD remaster, when the tangent of the post swinged towards the inevitable discussion of FFVII and it's most lauded remake proposition a lot of the posts in this tangential argument were about how it's too expensive for Square to remake VII because of how big the game world is and bringing that onto this gen (or probably next gen) equipment would be a massive and costly task.

This got me thinking of the wonderful world of Kickstarter projects that has suddenly exploded onto our scene within the last few MONTHS and has already changed the industry for the better. If Tim Schafer of Doublefine can raise $3 million in a matter of weeks for a personal project, just think how much the prospect of an FFVII remake would make if say Square ran it for a year.

I'd certainly chip in some money if it meant the possibility of this happening goes up a bit more.

Now the questions i'm asking is whether they could and whether they should use this as a way of generating revenue.

My personal opinion is that they definitely could use this method to not front as much of their own money to get the project started.
However I do think that they should use it, but not to generate revenue (per se). They should use it to generate an interest, a fanbase for the game which although they clearly know is there they don't know how many and how loud they can be.

I think Square should ask everyone who wants this to happen to put in just $1, which would get them a little something just to say thanks for your input. This $1 which if came from everyone who wanted the remake to happen would soon add-up and could part-fund the project, which then Square would have to put the remaining amount in of their own money to make it happen. The one dollar though could be seen to be a voice and if they had enough voices, then it could happen.

What do you think they should do?

Your Arguement is Invalid

You could also just...replay FF7...is it on PSN...therefore stop wasting time with this and move on.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I don't think that they would do a remake of it right, for some reason they seem to only want to do a remake is they can totally chance how the game plays, like instead of controlling a char in prerendered backgrounds with a 3d overmap and battles, they seem to have the idea of making it a giant 3rd person action kind of game will tons of voice acting and other expensive things. They don't seem to want to remake it, they seem to want to make a different game with ff7 pieces thrown on it.

The purist in me says no, leave the classics alone and keep it that way. But the inquisitive side of me wants to see FFVII with FFXIII's engine and graphics.

Well and truly on the fence with this one.

I remember reading a interview saying something like, they would make it, but using modern graphics it would take 5+ years to make the game.

Its already been covered, but it bears repeating.

A: SE is like the JP equivilent to EA or activision.

B: If SE wanted to remake FF7, they would. Look at the long storied history of SE rehashing their properties. Money isnt stopping them.

C: Its a good thing it ISNT being remade. Its the most over hyped entry in the series. With such SE KNOWS that there is absolutely no way they remake 7 without creating a fan calamity the likes that would make the "Retake" movement look like a group of 6 kids complaining on the internet.

It boggles my mind. Why do people think they want a 7 remake? Its the ones who are the most vocal about getting the remake who are going to be the most pissed when it sees the light of day and it does not meet up to ever single nostalgic expectation they had.

D: Kickstart is supposed to be for companies to which funding is a hurdle that can either make or break a project. SE has enough money to buy studios (Coughedioscoughcoughhackhackwheeze) and fund several subsidiary studios under their banner all working on respective projects at any give time. To have SE come in and try to use kickstart would be a gross perversion of the intention of Kickstart.

Which, I am not feeling a lot of love for kickstart right now being highly burnt out on these campaigns.

Has there been a game made by this kickstart begging trend yet?

I'm interested in seeing it.
Well I cannot speak for a full game. Most games being built from the ground up via kickstart will still have lengthy dev cycles greater than a year. I think some HAVE been released. I KNOW Cthulu Saves the world/Breath of Death7 got kickstarted for the PC version and it did sucessfully make it out the door with all the extra bells and whistles promised by Zeboyd. Buuut in that case the game was already essentially developed, and the only work was the port. So, Something DOES come out of it, still uncertain as to how much or how often it actually pans out.

Least its not like the Extra credits Indie fund that basically went nowhere and still has not shown any movement on its promises especially in light of another indie dev group who basically already did exactly what EC was proposing and it has already got at least 2 games out the door, (EDIT: SPAZ QUBE & Dear Esther) and is a fully functioning entity.

Edit reason: Sorry, error on my part. Easy to get Acronymn named games mixed up.

...god no, just screams bad idea, I'd say more about it but I'd probably be suspended for it, so bad idea sums it up perfectly.

Meh. I'm over it, personally.

Seven years ago, five years ago, sure - I'd be for it. The time, for me, has passed. I have FFVII on a few platforms, I can play it whenever, a remastered version really isn't going to do anything for me at this point. I'd rather SE go back to what made FFVII awesome and come out with something new that is also awesome.

Not like they need the funds or anything, but if they wanted to raise money, you know how they could do it?

They shouldn't, but it could potentially show the power of kickstarter if they decided to.

I no longer care for a FFVII remake. A few years ago, maybe. It would be a terrible idea for Square, or any big publisher, to even mention they want to use Kickstarter. My, the crapstorm that would ensue...

Its probably going to happen though. Waiting for EA to demand 500,000 in kickstarting funds to make the next Dragon Age.

I can't remember if i heard right...but I think they are waiting to release it with the next playstation console :/ so I don't think we will be seeing that for years...(I could be wrong about that, can't remember where I read about it.)

otherwise I would agree, to get KH3 I would spend oodles amounts of cash...they would be rollin in the money

Ugh, every single thread about this topic makes me want to scream. FFVII is overrated.
And the existence of all these threads, the fact that FFVII is one of the highest selling downloadable games on PSN (all time) and even 15 years after initial release still garners as much attention as it does -- makes you wrong.

Sorry, them's the breaks.
No..It just means that people likes to fap to nostalgia. Also, people are are simply stupid. The PC version is far better than the console version due the mods available for it. *ahem* like HD textures.

There's a difference between popularity and something that's good. Like the Iphone, nothing spectacular.

Its a cool idea I think I'd rather play one of the older ones as a remake, like ff5 or 3 something. After playing ff13 I've lost faith in the hope that square will ever make a smart choice regarding the series, I mean its just a big long ass hallway essentially. I can't even make it past Cid, you go down the hall bang your head on a wall, and then keep going to the next wall. The writing is bad. Snow is chode. Light has a bad hair cut. Venille's irritating. Sazz is black. Fang is cool. And Hope is a fucking cartoon.

I'll give it props as being a very visually stunning game though some of the best graphics out there and the story itself, from what I understood of it anyway, was good too. I read the mixed reviews about it, but I've always been a fan of the series and I figured to myself "hey if I can play through Enchanted Arms, I can play through this", I've never let reviews dictate my deciding to buy a new game before. How wrong I was. To me it wasn't even really a true rpg, it was more like they were trying to make an anime out of it.

Still makes you wrong in that it's not overrated if 15 years later it's still popular. Sorry kid, shaking your fist at it and spouting subjective opinion doesn't make you right...
Same goes to you.

Again, popularity means nothing.

They could if they wanted. They shouldn't though. It's feasible to remake as there is an interest in it. They would make a profit from remaking it without using Kickstarter to raise funds ergo the only benefit from using Kickstarter is to get even more profits, which is very very selfish.
