It would be impossible for Chell to be in Episode 3. Remember, Portal takes place far into the future, way after the events in Half Life.

i dont think chell actually has brain damage, wheatley does say that at the start, but i think that may be more for comic effect.
plus gabe newell has said that chell probably can talk, but doesnt want to as a form of showing GLADoS that she isnt going to give her the satisfaction of insulting her etc.

aside from that, i did read somewhere that Chell "might" be involved in the main half life story-line, which i think would be interesting, as valve are having it where they are possibly not going to have any more single-player that cant have co-op; having Chell working with Gordon could be an interesting pairing.

Portal 1 was set around the same time as the half life series, one of GLaDOS's lines actually says something along the lines of protecting the facility from 'them' Which the combine overwiki assures me is the combine, which would make sense, to be honest.

But yeah, portal 2 is waaaaaay in the future.

Yeah.... I don't think it's millions.

The "nine, nine, nine, etc." thing in the beginning of Portal 2 was most likely the machine malfunctioning.

I'm not ruling out the possibility, but I don't know where Portal and Half Life compare on a timeline. In Portal, the only thing you hear about the world is that things have gone horribly wrong, but GLaDOS could be lying to convince you to stay and test. In Portal 2 the computer in the beginning tells you that the world MAY have undergone some form of apocalypse, but that could be either the Combine OR the fact that a computer powered by the lab's core would think the core going critical would be the end of the world. Aperture Laboratories was already abandoned and condemned in P1 because GLaDOS killed everyone with nerve gas. Sure Chell COULD meet Gordon, and she'd be the perfect guide for the Borealis if it's anything like the labs, but what if Portal 2 takes place long after Gordon died from old age? THEN AGAIN, Chell was put in a coma (chemically induced I gather) and woke up with brain damage, not any kind of stasis. She does look a little older, in fact. So if Portal takes place around the time before the first HL, when Black Mesa hadn't yet perfected the portal device, then Portal 2 COULD take place during HL2. All conjecture at this point, of course.

They actually never state how much time has passed since Portal. Were it millions of years there'd have been nothing left of the Aperture facility. I'm not saying that alot of time didn't end up passing but I would reckon it's more on the order of hundreds rather than millions.

@OP, Chell doesn't have brain damage; Wheatley only says it was a possibility she could have brain damage. She's also always been a mute; that didn't just start with Portal 2. It's just actually acknowledge by the characters around her.

Play the first part of Portal 2 again. When you wake up, the recorded voice says, "You have been in suspension for 50 days..." The next time you wake up, the recorded voice says, "You have been in suspension for 9,999,999..." Seriously, it says 'nine' seven times. It doesn't specifically say days so it could be years, but even if we go with days, that's still 27,397.26 years.
Impossible. in the room you were in, all of the furniture was intact, including things made out of wood and paper-these would have become rotten and disappeared if thousands, heck, even hundreds of years would have gone by.
I would say she has been in there for about 20-30 years, something like that, which would land her dead smack in the events of HL2.

Soooo...I'm going to guess that as of Portal 2, even though the Portal and Half-Life universes are connected, Chell is much further along in the timeline. Unless she's one of G-Man's other special subjects or Valve introduce a time machine, I don't think it has to do with her.
In my ears the equipment seems to be malfunctioning a lot, so the nines can be just a "broken record" so to speak. The real clues are the faded colors of the painting and the dent in the bed that just wont come out. But how long...its anyones guess.

It is never confirmed the Chell has brain damage, Wheatly assumes that Chell has brain damage, because she had been in stasis for many years.

Quite right, in fact Gabe Newell is on record saying that Chell will actually have a "fairly significant relationship" with some of the characters from the Half Life universe.

Like you said, I have also heard that there is talk of a deaf/mute character popping up within Ep3 which sounds like a strong contender for Chell. Points for this theory include:

- Chell is possibly deaf or at least hard of hearing as the announcer at the beginning of Portal 2 says the emancipation grills can destroy the inner ear. GLaDOS also mentions in the first game that it can destroy teeth as well.
- Chell possibly has brain damage.
- Chell is called "a dangerous mute lunatic" by GLaDOS and she never talks, possibly because of the above points.

I'd say this is all strong evidence of seeing Chell again soon.

PLUS: You see the 9999999 counter in various other places throughout Portal 2, especially at the turret testing line with the QA scanner. The screen is filled with the number 9999999, simply because it is the highest number their computers are designed to count to, it is not capable of displaying a number any higher. Chell could easily have been asleep for even longer than this period of time.

The thing about sign language in Hl2ep3 was that Alyx knew it. If Chell was indeed in the game, Alyx could translate for her, keeping both silent protagonists silent while enabling communication.

I don't think that will happen, though.

I think a better question is 'will GLaDOS be in ep 3?' The answer is no, of course, but let's face it - if she could extend her influence beyond the Enrichment Centre, she could push the Combine off the face of the Earth all by her damn self.

...And then alter the trees to produce a deadly neurotoxin, thus killing the whole world. So it would be better if humanity just repelled the occupation themselves.

He also says that this will lead to profound bleeding from the ear. This is just mentioned for comic effect. Just like the blue and white gel being severely poisonous but Chell gets covered in either several times without any noticeable negative effects,

Portal 1 takes place around the same time as the first Half Life. Chell is then in stasis for hundreds of years, long after when HL2:E3 would be taking place. So, short answer: No.

Chell doesn't have brain damage.

And no, the reason they set Portal 2 100s of years after was to distance the two series.

Millions? You're joking right? There's no way that facility would still exist after a time like that.
