Could Pokemon be considered an RPG?

It's something I've been wondering about for a while, obviously it's not a total RPG like Final Fantasy or Elder Scrolls etc. but it has RPG elements to it and if it's not an RPG, then what is it? An adventure game?

I mean, think about it, the basic things you need to make an RPG are there in Pokemon. The Pokemon themselves are stand-ins for the likes of weapons, spells and special abilities and instead of upgrading your weapons/spells/abilities you are upgrading their weapons/spells/abilities.

Instead of using your W/S/A to go into a dungeon to complete a quest you're going to gyms to get a badge, which is pretty much "the main quest".

Also, the "type" of Pokemon trainer you want to be is completely up to you. Most people will choose the most logical "type" and be a general all-rounder that trains all elemental groups, but what's to stop you from focusing only on electric or plant-based Pokemon?

The world in Pokemon is also rich with NPCs and minor side-quests for you to do along the way, much like a lot of RPGs, there are also other activities to do, like fishing, if you just feel like relaxing for a little bit which is also something RPGs provide (like the card games in Final Fantasy for example).

You are also able to find/purchase special items in various places, like caves, to upgrade your Pokemon, much the same as in other RPGs where you will find/purchase the likes of potions or enchanted rings to boost your stats.

Now, I'm not saying I'm right, that's why I put this up for discussion; so it can be discussed. I just hope you can see my logic here and see if you agree it could loosely be considered an RPG in its own right, or if you think it just has RPG elements, or it's nothing like an RPG at all. All opinions are welcome.

Well it's got a fair amount in common with the likes of Diablo and Torchlight except the loot and the monsters are the same thing.

My personal definition of RPG's:

Any game where you go on an epic quest to save the world in some way, kill monsters to gain experience, level up, and get stronger.

That's pretty much what you do in Pokemon, so why shouldn't it be considered an RPG?

Could Doom be considered a first-person shooter?

Pokemon has never not been considered an RPG. This topic is silly.

I thought it was considered a Critter RPG. I am pretty sure it defines the genre.

I thought it always was an RPG. Capture your monsters. Level up your monsters to fight stronger monsters. Win Elite Four. Go to challenge islands for more fighting and better monsters.

Does it get any more complicated?

It's an RPG. RPG's are about numbers and Pokemon is ALL about the numbers. You catch as many pokemon as you can, level them up, make a strategy, and advance as best as you can with the strategy you devised.

Plus it's for kids, so it is simplified so that kids can play it. Honestly, do you want an eleven year old playing Starcraft right from the bat? The Kid's head would expolode! Let them use thier training wheels first.

It is an RPG. It has levelling, statistics, abilities with elemental (read: type) weaknesses and strengths and turn based battles.

I've always considered it an RPG, well, I guess it's really more of a JRPG, but yeah.

I mean, you level your party up, do 'quests'- if you really want to call them that- and collect 'loot'- items, badges and pokemon.

But then again, I've heard it described as 'that weird little game', so there's that.

Huh? When was it NOT considered an RPG? It's always been universally considered as such.

It is an RPG.

You play as a pokemon trainer and train your pokemon how you want them. How does that not classify as an RPG?
