Could Square Enix go 360 exclusive?

Recent sales numbers indicate that the breakdown of Final Fantasy XIII sales in NA and Europe combined is roughly 60% PS3 and 40% 360, which is MUCH closer than anyone expected. MS was able to pay SE enough to port FFXIII to the 360, advertise only the 360 version, AND get a bundle only for the 360. With that kind of money (this IS Microsoft we're talking about here) and a sizable user base on the 360 (one which may end up equaling the PS3 user base in size), couldn't MS pay SE to develop exclusively for the 360? 360 users clearly want FFXIII and MS could probably pay them enough to offset the money they'd lose by not developing for PS3.

Nah no way. I mean look they left PS3 only to make FF 13 multiplatform, why would they go back to being an exclusive game developer?

Only if Microsoft was willing to pay Squeenix for the 60% of their sales they'd be missing without advertising.

Possible, but unlikely. Especially with how Squeeniz is so apt to create epic length games, doing so on a such a limited DVD-9 format is much more annoying than throwing it on a Blu-Ray disc.

I love my 360, but MAN I can't stand having to change discs when playing Mass Effect 2.

I don't think they'd do it. They'd face the wrath of all the Sony/FFVII-XII fanboys, and God knows no one deserves that.

Most developers these days are not stupid enough to limit their demographic like that. The only time you really ever see this is with new franchises and young developers. I would go as far as to say that future Mass Effect games (after ME3) may also appear on a Sony platform (PS4 by then probably).

I think the only reason Square started developing for one console exclusively in the first place was because the console they chose was the most powerful of the lot. The SNES had the upper hand in the 16/32-bit era, so they got FFII-III. The PSOne was miles ahead of the N64, so it got FFVII-IX. The PS2 beat out both the Gamecube and the Xbox (though not by much), so it got FFX-XII.

Now we've reached the point where the difference in power is negligible enough that Square can publish on both. It isn't about brand loyalty, or anything as stupid as that; it's about being able to deliver the product. Microsoft and Sony both have the hardware to do it, so Square will probably continue to go with both.

Honestly, why would they choose a smaller audience over a larger one?

It is in the realm of possibility - but then again, so too is DC Comics having Batman and Nightwing professing their love to each other, moving out to Rhode Island and spending their remaining years yachting and growing tomatoes. In other words..... very slim.

Keep in mind Square Enix is a Japanese based company and Microsoft isn't held in as high esteem in Japan as Sony. Further, while I don't have any actual numbers, I can say almost certainly that a large portion of Square Enix's gaming market is this on the other side of the Pacific. Yes, Microsoft's presence has improved in recent years in Japan, but I sincerely doubt unless Microsoft is willing to dish out MASSIVE amounts of money will Square Enix jump the Sony gravy boat. Then again, look at how much they used to buy Rare back in the day... and see how much that's done for them.

I thought bioware had stated they are going to finish the trilogy on the 360 system.

However, development is a business. Whatever model stands to make the most profit the developer will choose to do. There might be system fanboys, but everyones a money fanboy.

This man speaks sense, Squenix are not going to voluntarily give up all those users espically as the PS3 is finally coming into its own.

Microsoft could not afford to pay them the difference, just because they have lots of capital doesnt mean they can use it on any old idea it still has to be accounted for, and at this stage the money would be better spent elsewhere

If you are not a first part developer theres no sound economic reason to stay exclusive.

SE I believe care more than enough to not sell out so at least most of their fans can experience the games they put out. To go 360 exclusive would require everyone that has a PS to get an xbox. MS couldn't pay SE enough money to abandoned 60% of their fan base because fans are the reason why they're still around after having produced dozens and dozens of games.

lolwut? of course they wouldn't go to 360. that would be the dumbest move on their part in history, why would they lose out on all those sales, (which is a majority) and sellout its own country based system and fans? that woudl require microsoft becoming an empire and them taking over all of japan basically
