I'll recommend Earthbound and MOTHER 3 as soon as the people at Nintendo get their collective heads out of their asses.

Untill then, you should just follow the suggestions that everyone else has made.
The fan translation of Mother 3 is complete. I have played it, finished it, loved it, and am in the process of replaying it.
Yeah, I know. I'm at the end of the seventh chapter in the translation and I'm enjoying it all the way. I just don't want to suggest something illegal.

Planescape: Torment;
The longest journey (only if you have the time for a journey that long, of course)

I would not recommend: Final Fantasy series; Elders scroll series; Zelda series.

Two words: Mass Effect.

Your PC might not be able to run it, but once you juice it up or get a 360, it stands as the best RPG I've ever played.

I hate to bring up the ultra old school, but if you can wrangle up some friends, a good old pen and paper RPG might be up your alley.

The Witcher is actually a lot better now that the enhanced edition been replaced, and it one the few truly "grey" games as far as morality. I've finished all three endings and still don't know which one was the "best" outcome in my oppinion.

Gothic 2 any modern pc laughs at the requirments, 3 decent factions paladins, mercenarys, mages and combat takes some skill and you don't even have play the original to understand it, personally I consider it to be better than oblivion in terms of immersion people actually have lives when you are not talking to them, no in game loading screens so a seemless world, only bad is severly outdated graphics.

Icewind dale 1+2 if you prefer more hack and slash gameplay I like the full party of 6 character creation and the 3.5ed rule set in IWD2 Sorceror>wizard

I say "Super Mario RPG" On Wii Shop. Mainly cause it's so easy to pick up, story is great, characters are interesting, n active combat system.

One thing for the PSP that I didn't see mentioned was "Disgaea: Hour of Darkness." I liked the other games in the series but can't really tell you how this one is because I don't own a PSP.

Persona 3 FES is a great RPG if you're looking for something a bit different then the rest.

If you're looking for something to hold you for quite a while FF12 has a ton of post game stuff to do. (Though how you're supposed to find some of the side dungeons without looking online baffles me)

The best RPG's of all time would be Fallout 1 and 2, Bauldur's gate 2, and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

TES: Daggerfall is also pretty good. Morrowind is not as good but still worth the time to play and just don't touch oblivion.

Shenmue II is the best RPG to be released after Final Fantasy VII IMO, if you define it as such (the game's presentation is RPG-ish, though the battles are done in a Virtua Fighter-ish mode).

Paper Mario, Deux Ex, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Harvest Moon and Xenogears are all fantastic as well.

I'm actually a bit upset nobody has even mentioned this yet:

Suikoden

If you liked the old-school 2D Final fantasy games, but craved a bit more story and choice of characters, definitely give Suikoden 1 and 2 a try.

Both 1 and 2 were released for the PSX, unfortunately, they are kinda rare to find. You can buy them on Ebay for a couple hundred dollars if you're lucky, goes to show what happens when amazing games are overproduced.

I think they may have made versions of 1 and 2 for the PSP specifically, although you could just do what I do and import your PSX game onto your PSP. You can even continue your characters from Suikoden 1 ==> 2 if you keep the saved data on your system.

Suikoden 3 is amazing on the PS2, the first 3d game in the series. 4 is kinda lame, tactics is pretty "meh", but I heard 5 was good. Once again, fairly rare games, not as much as Suikoden 2, but kind of hard to find sometimes.

For high fantasy in the way of 4-5 heros going all choppy with colorfulness, Tales of Destiney 2 is pretty fantastic (though rarely acknowleged) and is a PS2 title. You ought to love it, and it goes on for ever and ever, but in a really good way (like extra abilities are evenly distributed throughout on into extra end dungeons and whatnot). The Combat system is really pretty nice and cathardic too. No SNES eh? It is an aquried taste, but some people get really absorbed into the suikodens. Persona 2 is hard to come by but a rare kinda of good. The wild arms games are more akin to the 3 person turn based genre.
