Well, since it appears we already have two grumpy old man generals with extensive histories, I'll come back when I have a different character sheet.

You can always make a jolly old man.

Also, here's a brief rundown on the Academy. I'll keep fleshing it out more as time continues.

Weaponry is a bit more advanced than Game of Thrones, but not by much. While the battlefield has shifted due to technological advances, and the age of the professional army has come, the only really new weapon on that stage is the matchlock musket. So you've got pike and gun formations supported by cavalry, for the most part.

On the personal level, though, you're not really going to be using firearms. The Wheellock and Flintlock are waiting to be invented and matchlock pistols aren't really a thing, so you're still pretty much using swords and whatnot.

This looks like a great idea, so I went ahead and created a character. Thanks!

Name: Lord Vayon Foscare

Age: 43

Gender: Male

Position: High Lord of the Admiralty

Appearance: A tall, rakish looking man of 6'3 who is well built but not bulky, some time spent at sea gives him physical strength and endurance, though his higher position means he is certainly not a powerhouse. Military types are more imposing than he is. His brown hair has begun to thicken and lengthen slightly, in addition he is beginning to show signs of age and stress with grey hairs becoming more and more apparent. He wears a full, but short beard that is also showing flecks of grey. His face remains rather youthful and his green eyes remain vibrant, giving him the appearance of a man who is ageing gracefully and still has a great deal of energy left to him.

Vayon wears one of the most ornate of all Naval uniforms lest any forget his status, significant medals are also worn as a matter of custom. In addition to his uniform Vayon wears a signet ring of the Foscare family. The Foscare family crest is a golden Griffon on a blood red background, Vayon's personal crest is two Griffons which denotes his status as a second son.

History: House Foscare is a wealthy and prosperous family with coastal holdings, much of their land's income comes from the sea, be it fishing, trade or transport. Foscare holdings are not large, but are amongst the wealthiest in the Empire. As a result, all Foscares are taught to master the sea with the intention of senior positions within the Navy. Common custom is for the "spares" to eschew hopes of land and find glory at sea. Foscare lands are already small and no branch of the family will carve up their scant holdings to share amongst multiple children. The eldest son inherits the land and the younger sons either help run it or serve in the Navy, daughters are married off in politically advantageous matches.

Vayon Foscare is the second son of the main branch of the line, his older brother Anton (48) has inherited some of the most lucrative lands in the Empire while his younger brothers Drevon (39) and Trayvon "Trout Lord" (38) oversee the Merchant's Wharfs and Fishing operations respectively. In his younger years Vayon enjoyed sailing in a small boat with his brothers and was raised with tales of seafaring heroes to steer him on the right path. Vayon maintains a good relationship with his family though time apart has probably helped that as back home there is not a great deal for Vayon to do. Court is his new home now.

Vayon was set up for a prestigious career in the Fleet, his noble birth guaranteeing officer status and generous donations from the Foscare family ensuring Vayon rose quickly within the ranks, becoming a Captain at 28 an Admiral at the age of 36. During this time Vayon made several visits to Court and impressed the right people in the Admiralty. Of course being rich helped his rise incredibly and before long Vayon was a serious contender for the top job.

Vayon has also found time for a personal life, being introduced to Lady Eleanor Amosia (41) at a social ball with the intention of setting up an alliance between the Foscare and Amosia families. The plans went well as Vayon and Eleanor were married the next year. The marriage has been a happy one and has produced a son, Darron (14) and two daughters, Alicia (11) and Cordelia (10). Court is no place for children and Vayon has been careful to shield his children and wife from intrigue though he is aware his wife has manipulated others for his benefit before.

Vayon gained a reputation as a safe and reliable officer with a respectable record, though nothing spectacular. His true skills came in strategy on a large scale and promoting the cause of the Navy at Court. Vayon would think of the next new initiative for the Navy to take and was able to gain enough support to ensure success. In doing so, Vayon has made himself the public face of a reforming Navy that has the potential to be a mighty power within the Empire. In time he advanced to the position of High Lord of the Admiralty, responsible for the administration of the Navy and second only to the Grand Admiral of the Fleets.

Vayon is currently planning a restructuring of the Fleet and a standardisation in constructing ships. The first plan entails splitting the fleet into divisions by area and appointing an Admiral as commander of that division. Below them Commodores would command squads of ships and Captains the ships themselves. In this way every Admiral would have limited control over their division and be able to organise it as the saw fit. In a time of crisis they could make strategic decisions without having to consult with the Admiralty. This would also make record keeping easier for the fleet as the job would be appointed to several people with a division to themselves. All Admirals would be accountable to Lord Vayon and can be replaced at the Grand Admiral's discretion.

The second plan entails drawing up designs of different types of ships and sending copies to shipyards for construction. This would reduce building time as the workers would become more familiar with construction and suppliers more familiar with the exact amount of materials needed. This should reduce costs and construction time for ships. In addition it should mean a Captain and crew could be transferred to another ship of the same type and have them ready without a need to determine small but noticeable differences which could cause further problems.

Well, this took longer than I expected. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Name: Alistair Forster

Age: 47

Gender: Male

Position: Grand Admiral of the Fleets

Appearance:

A gruff, middle-aged man, Alistair looks to even the most casual observer to be a seasoned sailor. His hands are scarred and calloused after many years of handling ropes and wood aboard ships, his skin is hard and wrinkled after much exposure to salty seawater, and his face and body carry many scars, the most prominent of which runs the full length of his forehead and down into his left eye. His wood-brown hair is starting to grey in his advancing age, a fact he doesn't doesn't concern himself with hiding.

His clothing is atypical of his highly prestigious position - indeed, he dresses like a rank-and-file Captain, at best, not the leader of the most fearsome fleet in the known world. The only thing that makes his position known is the symbol of the Acherean Empire's navy pinned stitched to this uniform's right shoulder - an eagle with a whale clutched in its talons.

History:

Alistair hails from the island nation of Avalan, born the son of a common yeoman and a scullery maid. The day he turned thirteen, as is custom for Avalian youths, he left his mother's home and followed in his father's footsteps to join the nation's famous navy. Showing a keen aptitude for all aspects of sailing, from knot-tying to navigating, he swiftly earned the respect of his assigned crewmates and rose through the ranks. In the course of six years, he ascended from the lowly position of cabin boy to earn his first Captainship, relying entirely on sheer grit, wit, and force of will to make up for his lowly birth and lack of connections. He was assigned to Avalan's renowned Third Fleet, a task force primarily concerned with being the first line of defense against immediate, material threats to the realm - pirates, raiders, and the like.

For another six years, he served his post with distinction, garnering a reputation for incredible courage and earning the undying loyalty of the men under his command. On one solo patrol, he was set upon by a cadre of three pirate scooners, and through careful maneuvering and an intimate knowledge of the local currents and winds he managed to sink two and capture the third. On another, his ship dueled with the flagship of the infamous Captain Robert as he tried to rob an outgoing convoy. To this day, Alistair holds the distinction of being the only man in all of the Third Fleet to have engaged Captain Robert in single ship-to-ship combat and live to tell the tale.

This skill and bravado was put to the test shortly after Alistair turned twenty-six when the Acherean Empire turned its attention to the burgeoning island nation. Desiring its position in the world's trade routes for its own purposes, it attacked with the full force of its navy, attempting to bludgeon the outnumbered Alavians into submission. Its first surprise assault in the Waking Straits devastated the Third Fleet, reducing its numbers by almost a third before the Admiral in charge was slain in action, causing the remaining ships to scatter. As a matter of point, the vast majority of the high command in the Third Fleet was killed in action when the Empire muscled its way into the Straits, leaving it divided and leaderless.

However, much to the misfortune of the otherwise triumphant Achereans, Alistair survived the battle, if only barely. Wasting no time, he immediately maneuvered to intercept the fleeing Avalian ships, using his reputation and force of personality to bring them back under the Third Fleet's banner. Within two weeks, he had managed to salvage a full half of the fleet's original strength, and in the interim the remaining Captains elected him the new Admiral.

Alistar promptly used his new position to make life hell for the otherwise unstoppable Acherean fleet. Realizing he had no chance to win if he engaged the Achereans head-on, even with the rest of Avalan's navy at his back, he adopted a style of careful baiting and hit-and-run warefare to harry the Imperials. Using his intimate knowledge of Avalan's seascape, he ambushed supply convoys, isolated patrols, and otherwise poked and prodded at the lumbering Acherean war machine. His exploits and tactics in that conflict are still the subject of study in Acherean academies to this day, as demonstration to fresh recruits that mere numbers didn't make a fleet invincible.

Alas, for all of Alistair's efforts, his homeland couldn't stand against the Acherean Empire's might. Five years after the Battle in the Waking Straits, Avalan unconditionally surrendered.

Three weeks after the treaty was signed, Alistair received an offer directly from the office of the Grand Admiral - so impressed with his skill as a commander, the Grand Admiral himself offered him the prestigious position of Major Admiral, the second-highest post in the Acherean navy. Alistair reluctantly accepted, seeing the need for Avalians in high places in the coming days. When the Grand Admiral himself retired six years later, Alistair was at the top of the list to replace him.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Since Arcanist and I are going for the same position why don't we allow Arcanist to be Grand Admiral (being more of a seafaring character) while I would be something of an Aide with a senior position in the Admiralty? Arcanist's character is more of an old sea dog and I deliberately designed my character to not be.

Edited my character sheet to fit in with this.

Timetable for this is going to be rather lengthy due to me only being infrequently on, and expect anything that needs DM intervention and whatnot to take a while to be resolved when we do get started.

Looks like no one has done a spymaster yet! I spy a gap in the market...

Name: The Spymistress of the Empire goes by the name of Katherine Singer.

Age: Katherine is 58 years of age.

Gender: Female

Position: Spymistress and head of the Imperial Intelligence Bureau

Appearance: Katherine Singer is an imposing woman; she is tall for a woman, nearly six feet, and rather than shrink with age she seems to have become a denser and more powerful. Despite her permanent scowl and murderous bad mood, she is a living battery of energy, and it is suspected that she will not die until she deigns to sleep, which may not be for many years to come.

Katherine's iron grey hair is tied in a permanent bun, and her blue green eyes stare with physical force from her weathered, lined face. She retains all her teeth, somehow, but it is rumoured that she in fact has dentures fashioned from the teeth of those called in for questioning. She wears dark clothes of a severe style that is respectable, but has not been in fashion for many years; the garments are clearly expensive to the observant, however, for fabrics are of excellent quality and the cut speaks of a master tailor.

She carries no badge of office, but instead indicates her identity by her signature, either "K Singer" or simply "Bureau of Intelligence"

History: Born many years ago and named Katherine Shannow, there lived a girl in a tiny nation being annexed by the expanding Acherean Empire. Many who lived in her town, situated near the border, spoke bravely about fighting the invaders, and most of them even meant it. Resistance against the armoured fist of the Empire was suicidal, and Katherine was no fool; in return for the guarantee of safety she gave the invaders information that destroyed what little chance the town had to survive.

Thus she survived the siege, but she was left without a home or livelihood. Instead, she turned toward the only option she had, and took another job for the Empire. Inserted into the fleeing refugees she headed to the capital and joined a cell of agents working to undermine the remaining war efforts of her former nation. The capital fell swiftly, and in the course of the war she became a trusted and respected agent of the Emperor. When the war ended, Katherine was offered the opportunity to live in one of the fine cities of the Empire, even perhaps the capital. But she remembered the limited life of a female, in which her best opportunity was to marry well, and instead she returned to the Emperor's service, but this time she was sent out into the lands of the enemy as the leader of a cell, with her old name forgotten and working under the name Singer. With the new name she renounced all she had been, creating a new identity as an agent of Acherean Empire.

From there, Katherine has been promoted through the ranks through a combination of success, internal intrigue and a sheer refusal to die; she has been working for the Emperor for more than forty years, and in that time few have survived long enough to rival her experience. Now she knows more about the Empire's intelligence network than any other alive, and she intends to keep it that way. She has no particular designs on power, but neither has she any loyalty to any but herself; she supports order above all else, for she is determined that her side be the winning side.

Moral opinions: Lawful Neutral: she believes in stability and the power of the state, instead of trivial things like morality or personal gain. She would rather be second in command of a powerful, enduring organisation than take over at the cost of weakening the position. On the other hand she doesn't care for "doing the right thing", and she has no problem with assassinations and kidnapping to maintain the power of Acherus and the Council as it's ruling force.

Considering we now have a new sheet and, I think with that, a full player count? Who knows? If Prince gets back here and says it's on, then I think it'll actually start.

As far as I know, Prince tend to take long gaps off; he's probably planning to come back on a set date and check all the sheets that have been submitted. The thread might go a bit cold, but as long as he's planning to come back, there will come a time when the it will rise again.

In the mean time, how are we doing for sheets? As far as I can tell, we only have competition for the role of Admiral (unless other sheets are submitted). If we want to keep the thread alive, we could swap notes on making our characters more detailed, or develop pre-existing history between them. Anyone want some backstory cross-over with Katherine?

If anyone is interested in being pre-existing friendships/enemies, bear in mind that Katherine is something like Lawful Neutral: she believes in stability and the power of the state, instead of trivial things like morality or personal gain. Lorthdale would probably like her quite a bit, since I would also describe him as Lawful Neutral. That said, he is pretty strict on a morality code and would probably not be too approving of kidnappings/assassinations since those kind of break the law. That said, as an outside surface deep level, which is what they would know right now, he would probably get along quite well with her and has similar personal goals, he probably wouldn't want to be king unless he felt nobody else could be trusted with it and would rather be part of a powerful kingdom than leader of a crappy one.

I can imagine Katherine approving of Lorthdale's methods and ambitions, and she respects that he has a code of behaviour, just as she does, even if those codes differ.

Also, I'm going to refer to Katherine because that's what she think of as her name; Singer is an adopted name she used to erase her old identity. Everyone on the Council should be well-informed enough to know it's a fake name, and so I'm fine with others addressing her by as Katherine too. She'll also use their first names, as she cares little for anyone's family names.

I think her and Emile certainly have common ground. However, much like Katherine, sitting on the throne himself isn't Emile's primary objective. He'd much rather throw his weight behind an ambitious candidate who's willing to essentially give him anything he wants in exchange for the support he can provide, so I think how they would get on would depend on whether or not they backed the same horse.

I'd be interested in establishing pre-existing relations, though I'm not sure what he'd think of Katherine.

BTW, Welcome back ThreeWords!! :D

It's nice to be back, and nice to be remembered. Glad to see you're still around, Doc.
As for pre-existing relations, the limiting factor is that we haven't put any politics in our sheets, nor personalities. Though maybe these things are for the best; iunner motives tend to be important in subterfuge...
