just a little scary thought for those who are about to go to sleep.....

3AM is supposedly the witching hour (the opposite time of jesus' crucifixion), which is the hour when most paranormal activity happens

HOWEVER, scientific research has shown that when you sleep, most people reach deep sleep at this time, which is when nightmares are most likely to occur.... bit too much of a coincidence for me.... especially as alot of you have reported waking up around this time

One time I was downstairs reading the paper when everyone else was at school/work, when I heard a door close upstairs. I went to check it out, even though I knew it was the wind. It was, and the window was open, and I could tell that it had happened with some force because some water in a glass was shaking. I closed the window and opened the door again, and went back downstairs.

About 5 minutes later I heard the noise again. I went back upstairs, a little confused, and the door was closed, the window was open, and the glass of water--which was on a counter--was spilled. FYI my window there is about 10 feet off the ground.

i used to work nights alone in a windowless control room - I used to hear screaming & banging on the building.

Its happened once or twice since we've started working in pairs...But still no explaination.
Hmm... reminds me of one of the first nights when I moved out of my parent's house. I used to have a roommate, so I was practically never completely alone. When she stayed at her boyfriend's home over night I went to bed and couldn't sleep. The flat is build near a highly frequented street, so I had to close the shutters completely because of the sound and light. Well, suddenly I heared a male voice yelling "Let me out!", then I heared the sound of thick wood bursting and something heavy and big rolling over the floor. Almost shit my pants as I was lying with my back to the door. I thought I would die turning around.

The other night I also heared the beating of a heart for about 1 minute. Creepy flat...

2. I was sleeping, when all of a sudden i was slapped in the face. no one else was home.
For some reason, I laughed at this. Some of these have been pretty damn creepy though I must admit. Only real experience I've had, and I genuinely believe my eyes were playing tricks on me, (I was VERY tired) was just seeing a light figure by my door about five or so years ago.
Had the outline of a person, just staring at me. Stayed there for around five seconds, then disappeared. No noise, no real terror, other than confusion at what I was indeed looking at, it was actually pretty peaceful.

From when I was 6-7 I frequently woke up in the middle of the night to see 3 figures standing over me. I couldn't move and could feel as if I was being randomly grabbed and immediately let go. For some bizzare reason (that actually helped make it less terrifying due to how ridiculous it was) one of them reminded me of Mike Tyson and one reminded me of a cowboy. I couldn't actually see them very well, but when I would wake up again in the morning I had strange memories of it. It terrified me, until one day when I was looking at random stuff on Wikipedia (no other kids lived near me, I was a very bored kid) I found out about night terrors and sleep paralysis and felt like a massive idiot. I kept having them for a couple weeks and then they stopped.

EDITED FOR MORE DETAILS: The night terrors/sleep paralysis also took another much more terrifying form, that actually scared the shit out of me. I would hear whispering in my head, mostly along the lines of "I'm coming..." and random psychotic giggling, and then I would feel hands all over me and just sheer terror. It would continue for a bit then just stop and I would almost immediately fall back asleep. It lasted a bit longer than the trio, and it actually made me dread going to sleep.

Well, I haven't had anything too exciting happen. But a few years ago, I was just resting on the couch in my living room, when all the electronics that were off, including : My Television's (5 to be exact), 3 computers ( one next to me) 2 radios, 3 CD players, and my microwave. Just sprang to life. I then spent 5 minutes convincing, yes convincing them to shut off. ( And yes, I did try to physically shut them off). Also I've had remote controllers and telephones jump from their resting place at me.

[This one is one my mom told me]

Well, she and my father had just bought and appartment after getting married. The first few mounts were fine and nothing happened. After about 3 mounts of living in there they heard a young woman crying in the room over, accompanied by a baby's cry. This happened every night for a week at the exact same time, 11:23pm all the way until 12:00pm exactly. My mom ended up just shouting at it for like 20 minutes telling "it" to just leave right now and they would not take any more of it's shit. And that's when it stopped.

I was home alone a few nights ago and everything in the apartment went staticy. The TV screen turned on to these waves and all the lights flickered. Hell even my laptop and cell phone did it. I still have no idea what it was (emp?) but it scared the hell out of me.

This isn't that exciting but it did happen:
I came home one night and a voice yelled "HEY!" right in my ear. So loud that it made me jump and scream "WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK". Nobody was in the house and I wasn't drunk.
A few months later I was hoovering my room when a t-shirt flew past my head. I thought the thing that yelled "HEY" in my ear had returned and I wasn't going to let it piss me off so I said "heh.. Nice try" and carried on.
Later that evening my house mate knocked on my door and we had a chat. He glanced at the floor and saw the same t-shirt that flew past me earlier. He said it was his. There is no way it could have possibly made its way into my room. I was facing the only window in my room when it flew past me and my door was locked. Yep... Even my ghost stories are mundane.

You weren't the only one.
Four years of suffering!
Four!

That is a lot of years!

Also, wow, you only live an hour or two away from me.
Creepy.
Whoa, are you serious? Also I just noticed you are two years younger than me...o_O Small world. We should meet sometime and studiously avoid talking about politics, lol. Now that would probably be creepy, seeing Max face to face. XD

Once my parents went abroad and I had to stay behind with some relatives because there was a field trip coming up which cost us 500?, I would leave one day later so I had to be all alone for one night, at 12:00 exactly (I have a alarm clock next to my bed) I woke up for no reason and felt like some ominous presence was in my room... then a gust of wind suddenly blew and started banging my open window against the wall, and I felt like I was being pressed down by something. I tried all methods of waking oneself up forcefully but I was clearly awake. After a minute I decided t suddenly turn on the lights and sit up right...the wind stopped, and the room was empty...the dog suddenly started barking and then all became silent.

I didn't sleep the entire night after that!

I was in the car with my mum and step dad driving to Stranrar to get a ferry to Ireland and we're going down the motorway about 70 - 80 mph and this dog just appears out of nowhere on the road about 15ft away, we were never going to not hit it and my step dad didnt even have time to dodge it but there was no thud, no dents and when we pulled over, no blood and no dog on the road. it was freaky man...

I have a lot of...Hang on... seen this in a dream before...moments. I had one in L4D. Dreamed that i would walk into the room, get jumped by 5 common infected through the closest door on the left, go through it, see one petrol can on a table on the table on the left, then have a hunter jump down outside the adjacent door, away a few feet and just to the right. The dreams help me in games sometimes.

EDIT: I've also seen more than a few Man and cat shaped shadows bouncing around. In my house a cat i had when i was 2 died, and my next door neighbor died. He was a nice guy. He left me a hand made wooden plane.

The only creepy thing that has ever happened to me was entirely my doing. My family lives across from a really cool old graveyard and when I lived at home my bedroom was on the bottom floor so if I couldn't sleep I would sneak out and wander around the graveyard. I don't believe in ghosts and I always felt fairly safe there. One night when I was out there I heard a noise like a squeaky chew toy, always just far enough ahead of me that I couldn't see what was making it. I figure it was probably a duck or a fox but it's hard to think rationally when there's no moon and you can't see.

I usually don't have any sleep disorders or scary dreams, but I did have some normal nightmares when I was little. Also did some sleepwalking, but really rarely. This one time my mom told me a couple of years ago I walked out of my room and said I want to sleep in their room. I don't remember any of that. But the really strange thing happened a few years ago. I don't remember my dreams very often and we're on vacation at the beach. So we go to restaurant and there was a singer. That moment I look towards him and I see the waiter in the background. Then I remember this exact moment when I was sleeping and I saw the same thing. Down to the last detail. The singer was blond, the background had a certain style, the waiter was passing at the exact same angle and pace. I saw the freaking future.

Also here's one from my dad: My dad and a friend were at an yearly concert at a little town. And after the concert they were completely smashed. So they parked at the first parking place they saw. In the morning my dad wakes up and sees a very scary sight: THEY ARE IN A FREAKING GRAVEYARD! So they were sleeping along with about 500 dead people that night.

Probably doesn't count as it's not unexplainable. Some friends and I decided to camp in some woods next to my house. Since their where three of us and two 2 man tents one of us had to sleep alone. I live sort of in the country, and so there is a fair bit of wildlife about. Anyway in the middle of the night a Vixen started crying (or whatever the verb is for Foxes making a noise). Now if you've heard a Vixen they don't make a howl or a bark, but scream like hell. I knew what it was, but my friend in the tent alone didn't, and thought it was someone being killed. Needless to say he didn't sleep well that night.
