Crime in Sydney is always rather minor, but i live near a neighborhood where if you don't give up your wallet or your phone to the local public housing inhabitants,
you're going to get f'd with a knife.

The people around here are fed up, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before vigilante justice starts popping up. How's crime going in your neck of the woods?
Just fine, we have Police and gun control laws.

Vigilante Justice? Is someone patrolling the streets at night, dressed like a man-leopard? Because thats what I did when crime was on the rise in my area.

The vast majority of knife wielders have little or no expertise with knives. A small amount of training on your part could very quickly make that knife a liability to the criminal. (i.e. you take it of him and shove it up his arse!)

Not much crime around here, other than vandalism, underage drinking, and fuck loads of substance abuse. And chavism.
Chavism is a crime.

Hearing some of the stuff in this thread makes me glad I live in rural England. We don't get a lot of violent crime around here.

Still, its sickening that some people can use force (and of course weapons) to get what they want.

Until death sentence by torture for murder/attempted murder is introduced crime will prosper...

My dad's work van was broken into 2 nights ago. They stole his coat and a couple of fuel cards. Really not worth the effort. They also tried to break into my garage and failed.

Not only were they stupid enough to try and steal, they couldn't even do it right.

Have dogs, will use them.

Seriously, nothing like a semi-large dog to deter criminals. Even if it has floppy ears and a glacid expression, there's no way in hell the average crackhead is going to tangle with a dog large enough to bring down and kill a small deer. Or two of them. And even if they do, you can take the oppurtunity to disable them and kill them. Or just disable them.

I live in a town with less than 500 people, and one red light YAY, so when the local Dairy queen gets robbed its a huge deal.

This is one of the rare moments where I actually like to live in Utah. Apperently to some study about a year or 2 ago Cache Valley(where I live) has the lowest crime rate in the Nation. That still won't stop my father from buying both a surplus russian rifle and a pistol >.<. Sorry for you guys though.

I think history would disagree.
I'm not so sure. The death sentence has an excellent record for preventing recidivism(100% I believe). And a quick flick through a history book will show lots of people who chose not to perpetrate further crimes after execution!

It also shows how ineffective it is in preventing crimes by others. Study: Stalinist russia, where crime usually meant death, or a jaunt in the prison camps, and yet the crime rate rose dramatically during Stalin's reign.

Well where the hell do you live? Detroit?

I live in fairly stereotypical (boring) suburbs, so not much happens here.

Two words: Krav Maga.
Learn that, buy a gun for your house, and feel a little safer.

EDIT:

Pointing a gun at armed robbers is a good way to get killed.
That's why you point and SHOOT.
Only if they are in your house, though. Not on the street, that's retarded.
