It's kind of a mouthful and maybe miss pronounced, but What are games that are well received, but seem to get a lot of negativity by others(I.E it has a low metacritic user score or a low user scores on other review websites) but you still like regardless. I like games like DMC, Dragon Age II, and the Call of Duty Series (prefer the newer games). I like DMC for it's excellent combat system and great story, I like Dragon Age II's story and combat more than Dragon Age: Origins, and I like the Modern Warfare and Black Ops more than the now dated and honestly overrated WW II games that get overly praised because like those games aren't mega block busters and other reasons.

I've noticed this phenomenon with ALL new games.

But I'll go with new Tomb Raider. That was fun and genuinely brutal, a combo I don't typically find.

This is a really tough one as I'd say the vocal minority that hates a certain game is almost always a rather small minority that comes off as bigger than it actually is especially with all the Metacritic user score bombing that goes on nowadays from people that haven't even played said game.

The only game that comes to me that MIGHT qualify is Final Fantasy XIII. I haven't played it myself because I just know I'm going to hate Hope so fucking much, I do wanna play it though, I just haven't gotten to it. I do have a friend that considers FFXIII to be the best of the series and he's played every single one of them so his like/love of FFXIII might qualify under this odd category.

Tomb Raider has gotten very positive user score at least on Metacritic. Two friends of mine that have played it have loved the game, and one of those friends is one of those people that hates like everything too. I actually just got Tomb Raider and just started playing it and so far so good. I think all those "Lugoscababib Discobiscuits" people are the only ones really hating on it.

Oh yeah, I loved the DMC reboot though I can see why diehard fans hate it. I just know that the mop on the head joke five minutes in caused someone to put his fist through the TV in rage.

You never needed to pick two weapons and stick with them like in the old ones, you can swap between every weapon you have mid combo *and* you have two attack buttons, something I straight up need in a game like this otherwise I get really bored. I liked the story, the aesthetic design was awesome, new Dante stops being a total **** after mission 2 and the final boss fight was awesome.

Yes you time the attack button differently for what, like three combos in DMC3? So impressive. Vergil carried the whole game for me I was utterly bored only playing to see the next cool cutscene. DmC was DMC3 but good. Yes I went there come at me bro.

Still Bayonetta is the best game of that genre by miles. It outDMC'd DMC so hard.

I never had that happen, I've had games that reviewed poorly but users liked but never the opposite. I don't like cinematic mash A to win so I'd at odds with most reviewers.

The new DMC

I really liked the game (I consider it the second best Devil May Cry game, after 3), most critics received it pretty well, but most online communities are full of people that hate it with the burning passion of a thousands suns.

I agree with hermes here, and it's simply because the one issue I actually have with the combat in DmC is the fact that Dante controls in a very sticky manner in comparison to DMC3, where everything is very smooth and flows naturally. Also because Vergil's DLC was very short and they didn't let you play him through the normal levels, when he was much more fun to play as than Dante in my opinion and actually played better than DMC3 Vergil.

For me, DMC3 still beats it out, but it's only just barely because of the combat. DMC3 combat with DmC levels, aesthetics, control scheme, etc. would be the perfect DMC game to me.

Otherwise -

This.

So many games get Metacritic user-bombed these days, it's tough to even keep track of them all. DmC aside, I suppose the easiest answer would be Bioware games.

Resident Evil 6's Mercenaries mode is more entertaining than most other games that have come out this year. The new maneuvering system, combined with unlockable upgrades that can adjust your playstyle, as well as coop functionality makes it quite fun.

As a RE game, sure, it sucks. But as a combat game, you could do worse.

People always complain that COD games are always exactly the same every year and they never change. First of all this argument that they are the same every year is invalid.By this logic, Mario is the same in every game as is Zelda and AC, BF, Uncharted, Killzone, Halo, do you get the point? They make games in the same series because they are a success and people demand more, but when they get more they complain its "exactly the same"..

Thats an interesting point because people DO give the same complaint about all those games, especially Mario and Zelda. For an example of what people who say that generally want maybe look at Assassin's Creed 2. It was very similar to the original Assassin's creed in spirit but rather than just being the same thing again it added a lot of features (Weapons/Armor/Hidden Gun/Gadgets/etc) that fundamentally changed the gameplay. The other assassin's creed's added little and felt more like expansion packs than new games. Another example of a good sequel is Diablo 2. Took what worked from Diablo 1 and dropped or improved things that didn't work. Added so many features that Diablo 1 feels like it should have had those features all along.

When people say Mario, Zelda, BF and COD are the same game over and over they mean that not enough changes to really make each new release worth it. Rather than improving on the previous games, they often just do minor changes or add superficial features, like only one new Mario powerup or a few new guns in CoD. Each of those series has at least one game that shook things up (Mario 64 and Galaxy changing the way the platforming works is pretty huge, OoT going 3D and Action Adventure was pretty big, CoD going modern day was a crazy idea at the time) but have since sort of stagnated, usually out of fear of alienating fans.

OT: I'm not entirely clear what the question is. Its critically acclaimed games that people didn't like that I did? Maybe Alan Wake. Critics liked it and I see people bash it occasionally. Maybe Braid too. It is pretty pretentious, but it still has some good puzzles and cool ideas.

Diablo 3. It was rightfully kicked around for its stupid always online requirement and the RMAH fucking up the heart of the game, but the minute to minute game play was sexy-smooth and punchy as hell. I enjoyed my one run through the game just fine. If they manage to get a proper loot system in place it'll be heads and tails above the anemic Torchlight and that ghastly abortion Path of Exile.

PS - Anyone else getting a bunch of German captchas?

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

Although it was considered "Okay" by critics it was absolutely panned by fans.

Personally, although both the gameplay and art style was radically different I did find both overall enjoyable; also the characters, dialogue and music had the same wit an charm as the original games.

I should finish it one day.
Ninja'ed ;p But well this but I'm expanding it to the multi-player, The vehicle building was like a mix between legos and minecraft meaning you could build ANYTHING for the task at hand ((if you wanted to do the task and not just mess around)) and everything could be extremely different and still work. Also deep enough that if you were trying to be competitive, you were always constantly finding new ways to improve on your design learning how deep the mechanic actually were in the game. I really need to pop it in again once in a while.

Y'know, I have never once thought that Braid was pretentious.

Now what does that say about me?

Dragon Age II

I want to hate it. I really do. But I just can't. Varric is a charming bastard, and because the game is told from his perspective, I assume that most, if not all, of the lore contradictions and tonal differences revolve around the fact that the entire story comes from an unreliable narrator. I love unreliable narrators and I enjoy Varric's exaggerations as well as his outright lies.

The combat is in the style of a 3D beat-em-up, which is fantastic. Most 3D beat-em-ups are clunky, stiff, and confusing, but DA2's combat is smooth and flows well. The only flaw is the unforgivingly punishing Nightmare mode in which the assassin will kill any character in one hit no matter how much health he/she might have. Other than that, hard mode is solid and arguably the intended difficulty.

It's a completely different game from DA:O, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The only thing that will make it a bad thing is if DA:I borrows more elements from DA2 than DA:O because DA2 is supposed to be a detour from the core of the series. The proof lies in the lower stakes and the lighter tone which resembles a filler episode in a television series. Hopefully Bioware hasn't lost all of their marbles and will continue the series using DA:O's tone, atmosphere, and mood from now on. If not, I can still accept DA2 as a good standalone despite its symbol as the beginning of the end of Bioware.

Yes, and those games get flack for being the same too. The reason they don't get it as bad is because they aren't all annual.

Anyhow, Mass Effect 3. God people got way to pissy over that game, its kind of sad really...

The Halo series, I really think the series gets hate for what it has caused rather than the games themselves (not an original point, I know). The games themselves are actually well built and do well to promote their stories, well apart from Halo 3 and Halo 4.

My theory is that Halo is just a 'milestone' series. It came about during the era of DOOM Clones and was often called one. Then lots of shooters started becoming Halo clones. One of which was Call of Duty and now we are getting a whole lot of Call of Duty clones. It's just shooter evolution. Everybody hates them during the time (as of Halo) but upon reflection the games themselves weren't awful.

Darksiders 2. I thought it was infinitely better than it's first time and had an absolute blast playing through it. I loved the way they evolved each gameplay element and the soundtrack has some great pieces I use for my league of legends mix.
