Exactly. Pirates are really just a bunch of spoiled children who want to play games without paying for the, with no regard for the consequences.
And what consequences would those be?
Other than more DRM (Which honestly isn't that bad for most people), there aren't too many negative consequences that can occur from a pirated game.

This is just promoting ubisoftist[footnote]A style of DRM that is overbearing or oppressive, causing large inconvenience to the user[/footnote] DRM that will only end up worse. Well done guys, you've successfully taken away millions of dollars of profit before the game is even released. I hope you realise that people need that money to make a living.

You see, how does this help anyone? There's already a demo so you can't use the "try before you buy" excuse.

This is literally just for those looking for a free lunch and all it does is convince the industry that further anti-piracy restrictions are necessary, which leads to Ubisoft DRM. Do we want that again?

Why are you people blaming the pirates? You should be blaming the person/people who leaked the fucking thing. That's like blaming the people watching a fire burn instead of the person who started it.

People are downloading a buggy game. A lot of the people that pirate games wouldn't have bought the game anyways, and the people who were going to buy it already played the demo and made their choice.

I meant proper protection not in a "Big Brother" kind of way but proper encryption and obscure coding. It's possible.

Probably sued, as opposed to fired.

Let's face it, probably millions worth of losses as a result?

So, this happened. [http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/02/11/an-actual-crisis-crysis-2-leaked/]

More than a month ahead of release. Singleplayer, multiplayer, online authentication key. Good grief. Makes me feel sorry for the gents at Crytek right now... but even more so for the person who did it, once they catch him.
Don't really get what would be the point of downloading that. It's just a developer build, not a full game and thus doesn't have everything the final game will. Any pirate with a shred of sense will just wait for the game to be finished before pirating it - just like everyone else :p

This is pretty much like downloading the beta of a game. With a game a mere month or so away, why not wait for the full thing?

Word on Facepunch, RPS is that it contains singleplayer and multiplayer both, just with limited (medium settings) graphics options. So, you can play through the whole game. You bet that's going to cause some damage.

TBH - I'd personally love to see a game company developing a super-hyped blockbuster release (like Crysis 2) napalm the pirate community by releasing a "leaked" version of the game a month or two before hand, one that includes a nasty trojan or virus of some sort, and the version has inherent flaws that prevent it from being played (or enjoyed). You know it'd be downloaded like mad, and everyone would deserve what they got . . . but, I'm pretty sure it's illegal for devs to pull such a stunt.
I like your style sir. I wasn't planning on getting this game but I really can't dismiss this news as irrelevant. When they pull out stunt like this it had an serious impact on PC as a gaming platform and therefore affects us all. I know they're gonna make a lot of money off this game regardless of pirates, but this just gives them reason to regard PC as a 2nd class platform, and PC gamers as potential pirates.

are you the creator, or a relative of the creators and developers of the game, by chance?
also, with pirated copies of the game online, the megacorporations will probably lose only 1/1000 of the money they're going to make
also, the guy who pirated it will probably never get caught.

That's a damn shame for everyone who put time and/or money into the project.

The moral outrage is pretty funny though, it's copyright infringement, not child rape...we haven't uniformly decided that it's "evil", and apparently it's unthinkable to some that opposing philosophies might have any validity(they're all valid, because none are right...).

Personally, I think it's kind of a shitty thing to do... But, "morality" as we know it is actually fairly flimsy(it's evident, as a species we can't even decide when killing eachother is "right"), and that doesn't scare me.

TL;DR - It's not "evil"...it's just unfortunate.(for those who require a platitude)

Uh, no?

No relation whatsoever. For starters, I live on the West Coast of the USA, as opposed to in Europe. I am attempting to enter the industry, though, so I sympathize with the developers.

It is within the realm of possibility for them to find the perpetrators here, if they really try. Find out who had access to it (employees only?), when it occurred (based on build status, date/time stamps, etc.), and who was in at the time. Then go through their on-site internet logs, or even subpoena their off-site records from the ISP. Chances are you'll find some sort of trail.

Heck, if they were really smart they'd include usage monitoring software in the internal builds so they could keep track of who accessed the folders/data last.

I don't understand this. I completely agree that waiting for something you want sucks, but common. This just undermines the developers and imo, it would completely ruin the experience of a game for me.

The guy can be caught.
And he deserves to be, releasing it as he has.

They should scrap Crysis 2 and makes Timesplitters 4! Jokes! [sub]Or is it?[/sub]

Well that's unfortunate for Crytek. I hope they can fix it up quick!

Well, I don't really care because the crysis games are honestly just tech demos. And by the screenshots I don't really see something more beautiful than lets say dead space 2, which performs absolutely ok on my pc.
OP: bad for them. But it must have been an employee. I'd sue that guy to death :p

Given I did exaggerate there but they've still taken money from the developers and the publishers. If they weren't going to buy the game then they shouldn't get it for free, that's not how this thing works, even the 'communist' argument disagrees with that. The people who played the demo and made the choice whether they were going to get the game or not didn't necessarily decide to buy it. Whatever their motive for pirating it they still have an illegal copy that they haven't paid for and have taken both potential and real money from someone who deserves it.

Oh, and before you play on the potential part of it like most do, it's better to have potential sales than to have lost the sale entirely.

Three months is a fast crack of a completely new form of security from Joe Blogs who does this shit in his spare time.
