This is the Mossberg 464 SPX

I think it looks damn cool, and am thinking of purchasing one, specially model pictured, .30-30 with a flash suppressor. However, in searching for data on the gun, such as whether experienced shooters have found any problems with it, range accuracy, etc, I happened across several gun enthusiast forums.

Not one of these forums had anything positive to say about this gun. They universally hated it, based on looks alone. Escapists, look at that gun. Does anyone see the hideous monstrosity they see? I don't. Is it just a purist thing, that lever actions need wood furniture?

I think it's pretty cool lookin' but I'm not much of an authority on guns. Maybe it's the spacing between the butt and the lever/trigger area that rubs them the wrong way?

Also how the heck do you reload that thing? it looks like you put the bullets in from the top but does that mean this thing is only one shot? may as well get a rifle if that's the case >.>

Honestly it looks like the creation of an amateur who is starting to use PimpMyGun. Note that I'm not a gun-expert and just another gamer.

Well, that is an important consideration. Not many people know this, but you get a respawn if you can prove the gun that killed you doesn't look cool enough.

Seriosuly, it's a gun, not a fashion accessory. If "looking nice" was the priority for the designers, do not buy their gun.

If you mean the grooves on the grip, the part of the stock behind the trigger, those are for, well, grip. The stock is extendable, with six length positions. Rails are pretty comfortable in your hand actually, and make for a good grip

Really? that's actually quite interesting. I was under the impression the side groove was where spent shells got ejected.
Other than that I guess it's a pretty good gun then, people seem to be to finicky on the looks

Well, it looked like a shotgun until I took a second glance, if that means anything. Uhh... yeah, I think it's more of just a purist thing. I have a theory that the more plastic is on the gun, the more gun experts are gonna dislike it.

When the M16 was introduced, the soldiers in Vietnam thought it was wimpy (among other things), despite the universal consensus of the soldiers thinking it was easier to manage that the previous M14.

That is literally the entire basis of my broken theory

Mild gun enthusiast here. Judging from looks alone, it looks flimsy as all hell. Looks like the stock would fall off under the hell I put my guns under. However, just because it looks flimsy, doesn't mean that it is.

I would like to point out something more to what are looking for. You want a 30-30, and were asking about range, the caliber really doesn't provide any. A 30-30 is one half-step up from a .22. I own 2 30-30 carbines, and they are absolutely perfect for hunting in thick brush because they are light and short and easy to carry, but with a 30-30 I wouldn't expect a clean kill on large game beyond 150 yards. Not without a near-perfect shot. As with all things, it depends on what you plan to do with it, but the 30-30 is really a niche weapon in modern times, it just doesn't have the powder.

Which kinda brings me to my next point, why on earth does a 30-30 come equipped with a flash suppressor?

It has an internal magazine, you load it through that funny slot/groove looking thing on the side of the action, probably holds 4 shots plus one in the chamber, and it is a rifle. I don't really know what you meant by your last line, the 30-30 is a rifle cartridge and the lever action is a rifle action. I don't think that the barrel shroud would be painful to hold, a gun isn't that heavy, but it doesn't look terribly comfortable. Also, I really want to know why they designed a lever action with a telescoping stock.

Not a fan to.be honest, the stock looks....bizzare and the foregrip seems too much like an M4.

Give me a good old Enfield No.4 for all my rifling needs.

Shells eject out of the top. Lever actions are kinda weird, but in a cool way.

Not entirely incorrect. Synthetic(plastic) stocks have some benefits and trade-offs. Purists like me, would never look for a synthetic stock, but you have to be a special brand of asshole to think that just because you wouldn't want something it must be bad for everyone. Synthetic stocks are a lot fucking lighter, and the trade-offs are mostly against super-long range accuracy, which isn't even on the table for the 30-30.

I agree with the gun nuts. Hideous tactic00l heap of junk. Based purely on looks, as you asked, I wouldn't trust that thing to hold papers on my desk, let alone kill anything.

That is what a lever action rifle is supposed to look like.

Just on looks alone I don't like it either. But the 30-30 is a niche weapon for a light rifle, and I'd bet money that thing weights pounds less than a traditional lever-action. That telescoping stock still worries me though, it's like the designers had no idea what telescoping stocks are actually used for.

Final OT: Any gun-nut is going to be skiddish about this weapon. Speaking as someone who has handled and fired a lot of firearms, it looks flimsy as hell. I would not buy this rifle for half price or even less over the internet. Unless I could handle it and see if it was reinforced or made of super-tough plastic, or something, it just wouldn't stand up to what I was gonna put it through.

That said, it's all about what you're going to do with it. It's going to be light as fuck, so there are a couple of things it would be really really good at, like as a back-packing weapon. And, if it was built similar to an accustock, it will be strong enough to handle any normal conditions. I still wouldn't want to fall on it, but short of that it certainly could be well-made, but plastic is also a cost-cutting material, so be careful.

Why would you want a tactical 30-30?

Like...what's the point?

30-30 is a hunting round, you don't need telescoping stocks and plastic to cut weight. someone mentioned backpacking, but other than that...

The reason people are hating this is because it doesn't fit. For a tac weapon lever action is an obvious bad choice and for a hunting weapon none of it's design help this gun.

I don't know, looks pretty ugly.

I love the aesthetic of the old wooden level-action rifles, it just looks cleaner and less... plastic.

My only experience with guns is from games, by the way. So, don't expect me to know anything about ammo, etc. I appreciate guns purely from an aesthetic and engineering perspective.
