I understand that sometimes, there needs to be cutscenes to convey some critically important part of the story, but then you have things like this:

This is just absurd! Why do people do this?!

Apparently Max Payne 3 was even worse for cutscenes and lens flare. If the developers of Need For Speed: Rivals thought releasing that kind of game at that kind of price was acceptable, they must have held some serious contempt for their audience.

Companies do that because they're lazy and they can get away with it.

EDIT: I'd put unskippable cutscenes and introductory videos in the same circle of Hell, together with condescending and unskippable tutorials.

That's not a cutscene though is it? That's an opening video setting up the game, not exactly the same thing...

It's still the idea of using videos to show stuff that could have easily been shown ingame for a better experience.

It's not really showing a problem with cutscenes, or at least not general cutscenes.

What it is showing is a problem with having un-skippable opening scenes (though this can be applied to cutscenes) and tutorials that you have to watch instead of engage with. At the very least, a developer should make all tutorial videos a separate, optional part of the game that those who want to watch can watch and those who don't want to watch don't have to watch.

However, when it comes to cutscenes meant to further the story, character development, etc., I really don't see how this video applies at all.

Indeed, I would also say it's possible to remove the intro by renaming/deleting the .BIK file associated with it.
But as John points out in the video, I shouldn't have to do that. Is it too much to ask for tutorials to be interactive, or at least give me the option to turn it off without having to mess around with deleting files.

It doesn't, that was something I brought up as a comparison. A good cutscene is, per definition, not what's on display in that video :)

*read this in the voice of either David Cage or Tommy Waisau*

Because games are Art and as such can only convey emotion in a certain way. A game player can't feel the right emotions by playing through the games and potentially missing out on emotions by moving the camera or the player character.

I thought there was going to be more than that but I couldn't come up with a good enough...oh well...Ya know what really constitutes cutscene Hell? Metal Gear 4...no, Final Fantasy XIII! You could skip MGS4 cutscenes from what I remember but none of them features Shiva re-imagined as a lesbian, incestuous, motorcycle who obeys a single human man.

I honestly wasn't annoyed by that. It was about 2 minutes. What did annoy me, however, was this TotalBiscuit dude. Although to be fair, he has always sounded smug.

I cannot wait for the day when society gets over the whole "cynical = valid and insightful" attitude. Gets kinda obnoxious really quick.

I just wanted to say that your comment really cheered me up after I read it. XD It's all 100% true. Playing any Final Fantasy post VII (except for IX) and the summons were drawn-out, un-skippable cutscenes of their own, sometimes only to result in a negligible amount of damage.

OT: I get annoyed whenever any game takes control away from me. I love cutscenes, they're the whole reason I play video games after all, for the story, but I want to be able to pause or skip them if I can. For me, this falls into the same vein as not allowing me to make a manual save. I'd like to be able to quit on my say-so, not the game's, thank you very much. It's the same with video sequences that can't be skipped.

I don't think the guy who made the video is funny or even clever at all (he's kinda of annoying actually), but that was an stupid amount of un-interaction for me to never bother with this game.

It is just poor design choices or poor planning and it's just another reason why I can't just pick up anything now. I have to research everything to avoid all this annoying shit they put in so many games these days.

Oh, I seem to have failed to understand that was a comedy video. I was under the impression it was meant to inform us that the game is shit.

TotalBiscuit tends to be very opinionated and some people can't help but make it about HIM and not the point he's making. If his points are valid, it doesn't matter if you like his personality or not. And I wish people would stop bringing it into arguments as if it somehow devalues the information in his videos

Yeah, and I shouldn't have to inform anyone what I was actually talking about either, cause you know, since I can judge things separately.

Even if you make a good point, if you over-react too much people will just take you for an idiot, or think that you just have issues. Unless you do it in a entertaining way, it can be over-looked by many, and frankly I won't be looking at his other videos because of it.

In Max Payne's defense, the cutscenes are used to hide the abnormally long loading times. Most of them can be skipped about halfway through, once all the loading has taken place. Doesn't make it any less annoying though

As bad as that cutscene BS was, I think the framerate locking was the greater sin here. Like TB said, there is really no excuse for a 2013 PC game to be locked at 30 FPS.

If my PC can run a game at 60 FPS or higher let me do it dammit!

Actually, this is one of the things I like about skyrim. Not only can you ask about only what you want to hear about, but if the guy is talking too slow you can turn on subtitles and even skip through the dialogue. You only get as much story as you want, and aside from the opening and some drawn out finishing moves, skyrim really does interaction well. Many things depend on your interaction, and many other things don't. But the important think is that skyrim leaves all the control and all the decisions aside from the opening and the main quest up to you. Even then you have to make some choices in the main quest.

I like skyrim because it understands that games are more than movies and that leaving as many things as possible up to the player is important.
