Well, deploy the Jack Layton bomb on this one if it is really as bad as it seems. I'll be in Windsor so I can still see Redwings hockey.Lonan said:You pansy, stand and fight. Canada is owned by the people. Sure, the government goes off and does ridiculous things sometimes, but then we make them remember it in the next election. And we can always turst the NDP to send some hardcore zingers at ridiculous laws and whatnot. I'm sure we would pull through eventually. Although it's good that you would want to go to Scandinavia, since it's cold. I would really be calling you a mansy if you wanted to move to some heat loving place...AvsJoe said:True that. This is just one of the reasons why I'm truly proud to be Canadian. But if we start down the same path I'm moving to Scandinavia.TheDoctor455 said:Actually, we've been forced to give up shitloads of rights for the ILLUSION OF SECURITY.AvsJoe said:I really hope that this doesn't pass. The Internet is the last truly free place on Earth (and it's becoming less and less so every day). This could mean more 'security', but many Americans have given up a shit ton of rights lately for all their added security so this isn't necessary.
This is sort of like the thing that may be happening in Australia called "Cleen-Feed". There's even a steam group against it.IDBash said:The basics of this act are that the government will have full control of the internet in every way shape and form. That right there makes me cry myself to sleep every day.paulgruberman said:Accuracy is all I go for, and sadly every last one of the cable news networks is firmly in the camp of entertainment over fact. Fox may have championed the cause when they won the legal battle allowing them to air innaccurate reports because they're classified as 'entertainment news', but the remaining networks followed suit. Print news sources at least had to at least make an effort at some form of integrity, but they're dying out as people prefer sensationalism.
You know what's funny about that? Republicans/Conservatives think Liberals are the socialists, while on the political spectrum Conservatism is closer to Socialism and Communism.ZeroMachine said:My guess is that this was proposed by some conservative crackpot that thinks America should be a dictatorship.

First off I would like to state that I have no issue with emergency-state shutdown. BUT there is a hell of a lot more to this bill. They want to take over Cisco's program and my industry. Read the whole bill please. I even overviewed it for you if you wouldn't mind reading my initial post of the thread.AceDiamond said:You're just a conspiracy theorist and fear monger. Nothing more. If this was a big deal the net neutrality groups I pay attention to would be focusing on this and not things like the fact the telecom companies are trying to fuck people over again.
This is merely for emergencies, but of course you're not going to believe what a "liberal gook" says. The only reason I decided to waste any time on responding to this is because I cannot believe people like you are so fearful and dense, claiming a breach of the Constitution by this administration while casually ignoring the crimes committed by the last (explain to me how warantless wiretapping isn't controlling information, hmmm?). Your hypocrisy and those of people like you is perhaps the greatest crime of all.
And I'm also a lot more inclined to take the words of people like Richard Clarke over people like you, cause he's trying to allay fears rather than stir them up.
But of course, Karma is perhaps the ultimate equalizer, so when someone from China takes away everything on your network, I hope you remember this. I hope you remember it well.
I have no issue with the emergency part of the bill its the rest that bothers me. The want to take over Cisco over the next 3 years... thats the part that bugs me. They will control the IT of every company. I would have to work for the government to stay in my current position. Your identity is stolen from your home machines 99/100 times. This will never help that. Companies do not need a government run Cisco certification program, that is a governmental power grab. The emergency situation is a safety clause.G1eet said:Well, I think we have differing opinions because you live in California, and I'm a New Yorker. No governor of mine has fucked over my state... yet.
Plus, there's lots of conspiracy theories out there saying that the world is going to end, or that the government is controlling us with flu shots, or... what have you. If shit really starts to hit the fan, then I'm fucking legging it to Canada. At the moment, I'm not particularly worried that the government will see my search history or what I've been telling my friends on Facebook. I've got nothing to hide. If anything, I know stuff they'd like to know.
Although I'm not in favor of a fascist police state, I am in favor of the government cracking down on more people. I would bet that most of you Escapists don't have much to hide, if at all. Even if some of you were to get caught, it'd be a slap on the wrist at worst. And this is just the American Escapists.
There's also many here that don't have to worry about it because they're in another part of the world. And for that, I envy you.
Edit: I also just realized you said you'd rather an identity thief run amok with your personal information. Do you know how much shit he/she could pull? Not to mention the long hours trying to get your information back.
... You just don't get it, do you? The government wants nothing of our personal information. They don't want to sully your good name and buy tons of cocaine with your checking account or send a hundred copies of Twilight- en Espanol- to your Kindle.
Oi.
In order to work in the security branch of IT, you already need to be licensed. It is call Cisco certifications, Microsoft certifications, etc. You can't get a job without these. The government is the one getting hacked; How often do you hear of private organizations getting hacked? Private industry understands, the government is the one that doesn't. They need to start hiring guys with these certs and not the one with CS degrees. Also, they need to encourage overtime instead of strictly forbidding it. I work at least 2 hours of unpaid overtime per day, but that is another topic.Flying-Emu said:You're kidding, right? This isn't as bad as you're all making it out to be. You're acting as if this is the Apocalypse of the Internet.
The bill, even if it passes, which it likely won't, won't affect you extremely. All it is saying is that to be a provider of Cyber-Security for the Government, you have to have a license. You are seriously scared by this. For the President to designate the Internet as a "critical infrastructure information system", he would have to somehow destroy phones and fax machines, since they can accomplish everything the Internet can.IDBash said:The basics of this act are that the government will have full control of the internet in every way shape and form. The Internet will be fine. And what do you mean it will control public and private IT enterprise? They're simply making sure that IT people need a license to practice their trade, juts like, oh, I don't know. A salesman? A chef? It's just a license to do your job. And even if the President designated the Internet as "critical infrastructure", it would mean that only licensed cybersecurity could work on it, which to me sounds like a pretty good thing.AKA Government will control ALL public and private IT and Web services giving them effective control of all free enterprise as IT is the heart of Operations of all companies to date.
